Rumor: Apple Tablet Event Scheduled For January 26th, 2010

The tech world is a buzz with word that Apple has secured the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco for a press event beginning on Jan. 26.

Last week, The Financial Times reported the rumored reservation at the YBCA, the same spot Steve Jobs used to introduce new iPods in September.

Yesterday, a Fox News source confirmed the event, saying that the announcement will focus on the mobility space. All signs point to the new tablet, already the one of the year’s most anticipated releases.

Earlier this month, Apple Insider reported that production on the tablets would begin in February – featuring a 10.1-inch multi-touch LCD display – and launch in March or April. We’ll have to wait and see.

Charles Barkley & Sigourney Weaver Are The First Saturday Night Live 2010 Hosts

Saturday Night Live knows how to ring in the New Year — with hosts Charles Barkley and Sigourney Weaver.

“SNL” is back on Jan. 9 with former NBA star Charles Barkley as the host. The “round mound of rebound” is known now for his great sense of humor in commercials and on the golf course.

For the Jan. 16 show, “Avatar” star Sigourney Weaver joins studio 8H, along with musical guest The Ting Tings, who are nominated for a Best New Artist Grammy.

Happy Birthday, Stan Lee!

An American icon; comic book writer, editor Stan Lee turns 87 years old today. Stanley Martin Lieber, better known as Stan Lee was born in 1922 in New York City. The former President and the chairman of Marvel Comics created legendary comic book characters such as Spider-Man, the Fantastic Four, the X-Men, Iron Man, the Hulk, Thor, Daredevil, Doctor Strange, and countless others.  Lee changed the industry by introducing complex, relatable characters and established a shared universe where they resided. In addition, he also led the first major successful challenge to the industry’s censorship organization, the Comics Code Authority and forced it to reform its not-relevant policies. Stan Lee subsequently led the expansion of Marvel Comics from a small publishing house into a successful multimedia corporation.

Lee has received a multitude of awards for his contributions to the graphic medium and was formally inducted into the Jack Kirby Hall of Fame in 1995. He received his own star on Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2008.

Stan Lee was my childhood idol and I wish him continued success.  Thank you for the countless enjoyable hours of my youth. Your stories fueled my imagination and dreams. The wealth of wonderful characters and fantastic stories that you created changed my perception of reading; what was once a chore became a pleasure.  Happy Birthday Stan, Excelsior!

Ford Brings Wi-Fi to the Highway

Ford is making its cars into mobile Wi-Fi hot spots. The next generation of the Sync in-car entertainment and information system will use a USB mobile broadband modem to establish a secure wireless connection capable of supporting several devices simultaneously.

The system will be available next year on selected models — no word yet which ones — and you won’t need a subscription or hardware beyond the modem.

“While you’re driving to grandma’s house, your spouse can be finishing the holiday shopping and the kids can be chatting with friends and updating their Facebook profiles,” said Mark Fields, Ford president of the Americas. “And you’re not paying for yet another mobile subscription or piece of hardware because Ford will let you use technology you already have.”

Several automakers already offer in-car Internet access — Japanese drivers have been using it since 1997 — and many others are rushing to bring it to us. Ford’s announcement follows General Motors’ promise last week to make in-car connectivity available in seven models of trucks and SUVs.

Mercedes recently announced it has successfully tested in-vehicle internet applications – including web browsing, vehicle software updates and VOIP — on a prototype 4G network. It follows BMW’s Internet-connected iDrive system and Chrysler’s Uconnect Web in-vehicle mobile hotspot. With so many automakers getting in on the action, there’s a push to introduce hardware standards.

Ford is taking a decidedly different approach, opting to allow consumers to plug in their own USB modem to get connected.

General Motors, on the other hand, offers a dealer-installed system called Chevrolet Wi-Fi by Autonet Mobile. It creates a Wi-Fi hot spot 300 feet in diameter around the vehicle, and GM claims the 3G network achieves speeds of up to 1.5 mbps. The hardware costs $199 after the $200 mail-in rebate, and the service costs $29 a month.

Given how connected we are, it makes sense for automakers to put the Internet in our cars. The number of iPhones and other mobile devices being used to connect to the Internet jumped 75 percent in the third quarter of this year, according to JiWire Mobile Audiences Insights Report.

Letting people log on from the road will be a big selling point among 20-something buyers, the so-called Millennials who have propelled much of Sync’s success. Millennials will make up 28 percent of the driving population next year, a nine-point increase from 2004.

Kids aside, Ford says interest in in-car connectivity is high among the general public, with one-third of people surveyed by the Consumer Electronics Association expressing interest in being able to check e-mail or surf the Web from the car.

EyeClops Night Vision 2.0 Infrared Stealth Binoculars

Find out what goes on after the lights go out with the Eyeclops Night Vision 2.0 Infrared Stealth Binoculars ($59.99). Featuring real infrared night vision technology, these binoculars allow you to see up to 50 feet in total darkness. Kids eight years and older will love switching the binoculars to spy mode for covert operations, or using the long-range mode for peripheral surveillance. With a high contrast dual-eye LCD display and an adjustable focus, the Eyeclops binoculars provide a clear window to a never-before-seen world.

Designed for covert operations, the binoculars feature action detailing and black coloration that lets kids operate under the radar. The dual display provides clear images that can be seen with both eyes, and the form-fitting eyepiece with eye-width adjustment ensures a comfortable fit. A black neck strap makes sure that the binoculars won’t fall or get lost in the middle of the night.

The Eyeclops features four different modes for different types of operations. Stealth Mode makes you utterly invisible by removing the light that is emitted by the binoculars. Long-range mode helps you focus on people or objects that are as far as 50 feet away. Both Spy mode and Military mode alter your field of vision to simulate the effect of using real infrared binoculars. (Five “AA” batteries not included).
