Walt Mossberg Reviews Apple’s iPad

March 31, 2010

Walt Mossberg has had his iPad for a week now, and he’s ready to share his thoughts with us:

“I think Apple, all and all, has done a beautiful job with this thing…. This is a robust, general-purpose device. How did it perform as an e-reader? I thought it did very well; I enjoyed reading books on here more than I so on my Kindle, because of the size of the screen and the sharpness of the screen, and the fact that you get color illustrations — and I’m a fan of the Kindle, but I would pick this.”

Vampires, Werewolves and Zombies: Compendium Monstrum

March 31, 2010

Is this little black volume Stephen King’s dream journal? This minuscule monster manual looks as though it could have been packed next to Indiana Jones’ whip and pistol.  Did Lara Croft use this helpful handbook on her last tomb raiding expedition?

Possibly…

Vampires, Werewolves and Zombies: Compendium Monstrum is an engrossing fact filled handsome pocket sized reference guide to the fanged, the lupine and the undead.

Within the foil enhanced case bound hardcover are 168 pages that resemble old parchment paper filled with informative morsels about the aforementioned monsters. Use the attached blood red ribbon marker to keep your place when reading about travel within Transylvania, studying spooky notes or viewing mysterious ancient maps.

Collected from the papers of 19th-century monstrologists Herr Doktor Max Sturm and Baron Ludwig Von Drang, this intriguing book is a must have for anyone that loves the strange, the unusual and the macabre.

$9.95 is a mere pittance considering the information contained within could possibly save your life on a walk home alone on a cold and foggy night. (insert creepy menacing laugh here)

The ZeroChroma Projecto iPhone Case

March 31, 2010

The ZeroChroma Projecto for iPhone ($34.99) case is the “Swiss Army Knife” of iPhone cases. It provides protection, sound enhancement and hands-free viewing in a sleek and intelligent form factor.

The slim case protects the sides and rear of your iPhone while still allowing access to key buttons. Its “Intelligent Wrap Protection” safeguards your phone from drops and scratches but leaves the front of your device completely accessable. The Projecto was designed with contoured finger dimples that assist in gripping your phone intuitively.

A retractable sound scoop slides out from the bottom of the case to direct sound from the speakers to your ears and your voice to the microphone.

My favorite feature is the 18 angle multi click theater stand which allows you to view media on your iPhone hands-free. This build in kickstand for the phone folds flat into the case when not in use and would be perfect for airplane use or entertaining a child at a restaurant.

Click HERE for more information about this ingenious case. Right now ZeroChroma is offering free shipping and a $10 off coupon (Code: #90999).

Trailer For The Expendables

March 31, 2010

Lionsgate has released the trailer for Sylvester Stallone’s The Expendables, starring Stallone, Jason Statham, Jet Li, Terry Crews, Randy Couture, Dolph Lundgren, Giselle Itie, Eric Roberts, David Zayas and Steve Austin.

The film opens August 13th.The Expendables is a hard-hitting action/thriller about a group of mercenaries hired to infiltrate a South American country and overthrow its ruthless dictator. Once the mission begins, the men realize things aren’t quite as they appear, finding themselves caught in a dangerous web of deceit and betrayal. With their mission thwarted and an innocent life in danger, the men struggle with an even tougher challenge – one that threatens to destroy this band of brothers.Barney Ross (Sylvester Stallone) is a man with nothing to lose. Fearless and void of emotion, he is the leader, the sage and the strategist of this tight-knit band of men who live on the fringe. His only attachment is to his pickup truck, his seaplane and his team of loyal modern-day warriors. His is a true cynic who describes what he does as “removing those hard to get at stains.” The team behind him is made up of Lee Christmas (Jason Statham), former SAS and a savant with anything that has a blade; Yin Yang (Jet Li), a master at close-quarter combat; Hale Caesar (Terry Crews), who has known Barney for ten years and is a long-barrel weapons specialist; Toll Road (Randy Couture), a skilled demolitions expert and considered the intellect of the group; and Gunnar Jensen (Dolph Lundgren), a combat veteran and an expert in precision sniping who struggles with his own demons. When the mysterious Church offers Barney a job no one else would take, Barney and his team embark on what appears to be a routine mission: overthrow General Gaza (David Zayas), the murderous dictator of the small island country of Vilena and end the years of death and destruction inflicted on its people. On a reconnaissance mission to Vilena, Barney and Christmas meet their contact Sandra (Giselle Itie), a local freedom-fighter with a dark secret. They also come to learn who their true enemy is: rogue ex-CIA operative James Monroe (Eric Roberts) and his henchman Paine (Steve Austin). When things go terribly wrong, Barney and Christmas are forced to leave Sandra behind, essentially giving her a death sentence. Haunted by this failure, Barney convinces the team to return to Vilena to rescue the hostage and finish the job he started. And to perhaps save a soul: his own.

Apply For Your Dream Job As A Honeymoon Tester

March 30, 2010

Wanted: Luxury-loving couples available to globetrot for six months and get paid to test out the most romantic wedding and honeymoon destinations around the world.

It’s a hard offer to resist, but what’s being described as “The Ultimate Job” is just the latest in a series of recent dream positions to capture the public’s imagination and serve as a brilliant marketing tool for people and places.

“It’s been sort of crazy,” said Rosemarie Meleady, managing director of RunawayBrideAndGroom.com, describing the response to the new promotion.

The Irish travel agency came up with the idea in part after seeing last year’s blockbuster “Best Job in the World” campaign in Australia.

More than 1,000 couples have already applied for the chance to be sent to resorts in Africa, Europe, Asia and the United States.

The winners will be asked to blog about their experiences a few times a week “when they can get out of the hammock after sipping a glass of champagne,” Meleady said, and write for The Irish Times once a month.

They will also be paid 20,000 euros (about $27,000). Hopefuls have until April 7 to apply for the “horrendous assignment” — as the company teasingly calls it — which starts mid-May. Read more HERE.

Twilight Author, Stephenie Meyer To Release ‘Eclipse’ Novella That Fans Can Can Read For Free

March 30, 2010

Stephenie Meyer will publish The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner, a 192-page novella centered on a newborn vampire introduced in the third Twilight novel, Eclipse, in June. The story chronicles the journey of villain Victoria’s newborn vampire army as they prepare to close in on Bella and the Cullens. It will be released at 12:01 a.m. on June 5 in hardcover ($13.99, with $1 from each sale going to the American Red Cross International Response Fund). From June 7 to July 5, fans will be able to read the book for free online at www.breetanner.com, which will also provide a link to the American Red Cross website where they can donate to support relief efforts in Haiti, Chile, and around the globe.

On her official site, Meyer says she never intended to publish Bree Tanner as a stand-alone book. It was just something she’d started working on while she was still editing Eclipse. “I was thinking a lot about the newborns, imagining their side of the story, and one thing led to another.” The novella came in handy during the filming of The Twilight Saga: Eclipse (in theaters June 30). Screenwriter Melissa Rosenberg, director David Slade, and actors Xavier Samuel (Riley), Bryce Dallas Howard (Victoria), and Jodelle Ferland (Bree) all read it before cameras rolled to better understand the characters.

Meyer thought the manuscript might work well as part of The Twilight Saga: The Official Guide, a tome still awaiting a pub date, but at nearly 200 pages, it was something her publisher thought worked better on its own. Meyer liked the idea of publishing it before Eclipse hits theaters, to give fans an introduction to Bree. She also considered the novella a gift to devoted Twilight readers, which is why she asked her publisher to make it available for free online. (From Entertainment Weekly)

Action Comics #1 Sells For Record $1.5 Million

March 30, 2010

Barely a month after Action Comics #1 and Detective Comics #27 sold for record prices, the first appearance of Superman has broken another barrier.

The Associated Press reports that a copy of the 1938 comic went for $1.5 million this morning on the auction website ComicConnect, jumping past the $1.075-million record price paid on Feb. 25 for a copy of Detective Comics #27. That issue broke a record $1 million paid just three days earlier for another copy of Action Comics #1.

Before last month, the top price paid for a comic was $317,000 in 2009 for Action Comics #1.

About 100 copies of the issue are believed to exist, and only a handful of those are in good condition. It has a cover price of 10 cents.

Cemetery Dance Publications Announces Blockade Billy by Stephen King, An Original, Never-Before-Published Baseball Novella

March 29, 2010

Cemetery Dance Publications, the world’s leading independent publisher of collectible horror and suspense books, has just announced Blockade Billy by Stephen King, an original, never-before-published novella that only the King of Horror could have dreamed up.  The Cemetery Dance exclusive hardcover will ship mid-April.

“I love old-school baseball,” Stephen King said, “and I also love the way people who’ve spent a lifetime in the game talk about the game. I tried to combine those things in a story of suspense. People have asked me for years when I was going to write a baseball story. Ask no more; this is it.”

Cemetery Dance and Stephen King kept Blockade Billy under tight wraps so it could be a surprise publication for the beginning of the baseball season.  Even diehard baseball fans don’t know the true story of William Blakely, but in just a few weeks readers will be holding this dark tale in their own two hands.

This novella is not scheduled to be reprinted in King’s new collection due out this fall, and we’re only printing a small number of copies compared to what New York publishers print for a brand new book.

For a very limited time only, Cemetery Dance Publications will include an authentic William “Blockade Billy” Blakely baseball card with every copy of the trade hardcover.

For ordering information, please visit http://www.BlockadeBilly.com or http://www.CemeteryDance.com today as this one will go quickly!

Lonely Road Books, the publisher of Dark Forces: The 25th Anniversary Special Edition edited by Kirby McCauley and Riding the Bullet: The Deluxe Special Edition by Stephen King and Mick Garris, will be publishing a deluxe signed edition of Blockade Billy, but official details won’t be announced until closer to the publication date.

Author: Stephen King
Artist: Glen Orbik (cover) and Alex McVey (interiors)
Pub. Date: April 2010
ISBN: 978-1-58767-228-6

AMC Greenlights The Walking Dead With Frank Darabont As The Writer & Director

March 29, 2010

AMC announced today it has greenlit “The Walking Dead” as a six-episode series based on the comic book series written by Robert Kirkman and published by Image Comics. Kirkman serves as an executive producer on the project and three-time Academy Award-nominee Frank Darabont (The Shawshank Redemption, The Green Mile) serves as writer, director and executive producer. Gale Anne Hurd (The Terminator, Aliens, Armageddon, The Incredible Hulk), chairman of Valhalla Motion Pictures, serves as Executive Producer. David Alpert from Circle of Confusion serves as Executive Producer. Today’s announcement also includes the addition of Charles “Chic” Eglee (“Dexter,” “The Shield,” “Dark Angel”) as Executive Producer, and actor Jon Bernthal (“The Pacific,” The Ghost Writer) who will portray the character Shane.

“The Walking Dead” begins production in June in Atlanta with six, one-hour episodes for season one. The series is set to premiere in October 2010 during AMC’s Fearfest, the network’s annual blockbuster marathon of thriller and horror films. Fearfest (formerly known as MonsterFest) is celebrating its 14th year by airing 14 consecutive days of themed programming with more than 50 films. AMC announced development of “The Walking Dead” in August 2009 and announced the pilot in January of this year.

“AMC strives to make original shows that play like movies and ‘The Walking Dead’ is a perfect complement to the network’s celebrated movie franchise, Fearfest, which has always been an important destination for our audience,” said Charlie Collier, AMC President. “With its depth of story and the remarkable talent attached, ‘The Walking Dead’ gives us an opportunity to raise the bar significantly within this popular genre, and continue our commitment to being the home of premium programming on basic cable.”

“‘The Walking Dead’ is that rare piece of material that plays on many levels,” says Joel Stillerman, Senior Vice President of Programming, Production and Digital Content. “Kirkman’s series brilliantly captures the social commentary and ongoing human drama of the zombie apocalypse; and let’s us kick a little zombie you-know-what from time to time.”

“The Walking Dead” tells the story of the months and years that follow after a zombie apocalypse. It follows a group of survivors, led by police officer Rick Grimes, who travel in search of a safe and secure home. The comic goes on to explore the challenges of life in a world overrun by zombies who take a toll on the survivors, and sometimes the interpersonal conflicts present a greater danger to their continuing survival than the zombies that roam the country. Over time, the characters are changed by the constant exposure to death and some grow willing to do anything to survive.
