John Lennon Remastered Albums & New Compilations To Be Released In October 2010

Eight of John Lennon’s classic solo albums and other standout recordings have been digitally remastered from his original mixes for a global catalogue initiative commemorating the music legend’s 70th birthday, which falls on October 9.

Overseen by Yoko Ono, John Lennon’s “Gimme Some Truth” campaign will launch on October 5th with the worldwide release of eight remastered studio albums and several newly-compiled titles.

Double Fantasy, 1980’s GRAMMY Award winner for Album of the Year, will be presented in a newly remixed ‘Stripped Down’ version remixed and produced by Yoko Ono and Jack Douglas, co-producers of the original mix with John Lennon. The new stripped down version of the album comes in an expanded 2CD and digital edition pairing the new version with Lennon’s original mix, remastered.

The campaign’s other new collections include:

•    A hits compilation in two editions titled Power To The People: The Hits
•    A 4 CD set of themed discs titled Gimme Some Truth
•   A deluxe 11 CD collectors box with the remastered albums, rarities, and non-album singles, titled the John Lennon Signature Box

All of the remastered albums and collections will be available on CD and for download purchase from all major digital service providers.

The albums have been digitally remastered from Lennon’s original mixes by Yoko Ono and a team of engineers led by Allan Rouse at EMI Music’s Abbey Road Studios in London and by George Marino at Avatar Studios in New York.  All of the remastered titles will be packaged in digisleeves with replicated original album art and booklets with photos and new liner notes by noted British music journalist Paul Du Noyer. The albums to be reissued are:

•    John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band (1970)
•    Imagine (1971)
•    Some Time In New York City (1972)
•    Mind Games (1973)
•    Walls and Bridges (1974)
•    Rock ‘n’ Roll (1975)
•    Double Fantasy Stripped Down (2010) / Double Fantasy (1980)
•    Milk and Honey (1984)

Power To The People: The Hits gathers 15 of Lennon’s most popular songs, and will be available as a 15-track single-disc and digital package, and as an Experience Edition with additional content.  Both versions will be packaged in digisleeves with booklets including a new liner note essay by Du Noyer.

Gimme Some Truth, to be packaged in a slipcase with rare photos and a new liner notes essays by respected American music journalist and author, Anthony DeCurtis, presents 72 of Lennon’s solo recordings on four themed CDs:

•    ‘Roots’ – John’s rock ‘n’ roll roots and influences
•    ‘Working Class Hero’ – John’s socio-political songs
•    ‘Woman’ – John’s love songs
•     ‘Borrowed Time’ – John’s songs about life

The John Lennon Signature Box is a deluxe 11 CD and digital collection of the eight remastered albums, a disc of rare and previously unreleased recordings, and an EP of Lennon’s non-album singles. The CDs will be housed in digisleeves within a deluxe box including a collectible limited edition John Lennon art print and a hardbound book featuring rare photos, artwork, collages, poetry, and new liner notes by DeCurtis.

Australian Bistro Introduces The MenuPad

A restaurant in Sydney, Australia has ditched paper menus for a decidedly digital solution, the MenuPad app running on Apple’s latest creation.

The Global Mundo Tapas restaurant has replaced their paper menus with the iPad.

“We have something that presents really well, sells our food really well and is absolutely dynamic,” said Craig Simpson, general manager, Global Mundo Tapas, adding that the iPad will enhance the dining experience.

Diners can browse, preview and place their orders wirelessly via this ingenious solution.

Damon Lindelof Ready To Boldly Go…

The tweet shown below was filed by Damon Lindelof on Tuesday. Returning from his well deserved post-LOST vacation, Lindelof is ready to get to work full time on scripting the Star Trek sequel with Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci. We are now exactly two years away from the announced release date of June 29th, 2012.

The screenwriting team told TrekMovie last week at the Saturn Awards that they have a story and that “the next phase is to get together and try to destroy it.” Looks like that can now happen. Orci/Kurtzman claim to have a “front runner” for the sequel’s villain. (Thanks for the tip Don)

Prince To Release His New CD ’20Ten’ For Free In Europe

Prince will release his new album, “20Ten,” as a free giveaway with various European newspapers and magazines. In the U.K., Prince has signed up with tabloid newspaper the Daily Mirror and its associated Scottish title the Daily Record for the CD giveaway. More than 2.5 million copies will be distributed on July 10 with the newspapers. The deal will also include Prince’s first British newspaper interview in more than a decade and competitions for European concert tickets. The German edition of Rolling Stone has announced that its August issue, to be published July 22, will include a new Prince album, “20Ten.”

As well as including the “20Ten” CD, the magazine will also carry an interview with Prince, who plays a July 5 concert at Berlin Waldbuhne. It has already published a track-by-track of the album online here in German. The 10-track album will not have a regular release at retail or via download, according to a statement from German Rolling Stone, although it seems likely that this only applies to the German market. Prince’s July 2007 album “Planet Earth” was released as a free cover-mount CD with the Mail on Sunday newspaper in the U.K., to coincide with his London O2 Arena shows. U.K. retailers reacted with fury at the newspaper exclusive, following decades of support for the artist by British record stores. As a result of the Mail on Sunday deal, Columbia declined to distribute the album in the U.K. when it released the album internationally a week or so after the newspaper appeared. Three years on, it is still not being distributed in the U.K. on download stores such as iTunes or with physical retailers. Prince has already agreed another deal for Belgium, where the “20Ten” album will be issued with the Het Nieuwblad newspaper on July 10, the day he performs at the country’s Werchter festival. The newspaper already ran an extensive interview with Prince on June 24.

It remains to be seen whether Prince strikes other European deals with magazines and newspapers, and how he intends to release the album in North America.

The 10 Most Expensive Pieces of Celebrity Memorabilia

Over the weekend, three X-rays of Marilyn Monroe’s chest were sold for a grand total of $45,000 at a movie memorabilia auction in Las Vegas. The X-rays were originally taken from a hospital visit in 1954, when Monroe was 28. Experts estimated the X-rays would fetch $3,000, but it turns out the price of owning objects that have some sort of relationship to famous people, no matter how tenuous, is worth a whole lot more.

To celebrate celebrities, Flavorwire decided to make a list of cherished memorabilia that people were willing to pay a hefty fee to possess. The list includes a helmet, wig, and pair of glasses. (Thanks for the tip D.T.)

Olympic fencing champion Bob Anderson wore this Dearth Vader helmet for the fight sequences in Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back. The universally feared helmet sold for $115,000 at an auction in April 2003.

Disney Store Celebrates Grand Opening Of New Store Design

Today we attended the grand opening event of the newly designed Disney Store at The Shops at Montebello just outside of Los Angeles.

The high-tech makeover of the Disney Store included many new attractions that will appeal to children and adults and create a fun immersive shopping experience.

Disney Store executives, Maria Canals-Barrera, Anna Maria Perez de Tagle and Chloe Bridges from the upcoming Disney Channel Original Movie “Camp Rock 2: The Final Jam” plus Woody and Jessie from Disney●Pixar’s blockbuster film franchise Toy Story joined the festivities and greeted hundreds of Disney fans who waited excitedly for the opportunity to experience the innovative new store.

The Montebello location is strategically located near Disney Store’s Pasadena headquarters, allowing executives and the design team to witness first-hand how kids and families respond to the magical shopping destination.  This is the first of 20 newly designed Disney Store locations that will open across major markets in the United States and Europe in 2010. The 4,800-plus square foot store’s floor-to-ceiling remodel now features multimedia technology, interactive storytelling and Disney Store exclusive merchandise that bring Disney’s most beloved characters to life for families in the local community.

“As part of Disney, we’re committed to the value of entertainment and exclusive experiences,” said Jim Fielding, president of Disney Stores Worldwide. “Disney is setting a new standard for the specialty retail category by integrating robust technology and creative store planning to make each visit customizable and that much more memorable. Technology is integrated throughout the new store to create magical moments for guests. The newly designed Disney Store is merchandised by franchise neighborhoods so guests can easily shop by character or theme and is anchored by several “hero fixtures” including:

The Disney●Pixar CARS-branded RIDEMAKERZ attraction is a one-of-a-kind immersive car building and customizing experience.   Launching with three favorite CARS characters– Lightning McQueen, Mater and Sally– fans use tools to assemble their car, and their imagination to customize it with a wide selection of rims, side pipes, hoods scoops, blown engines, spoilers and many more accessories.  Disney●Pixar CARS-branded RIDEMAKERZ toy vehicles will only be available within the new Disney Store design and, later this year, at RIDEMAKERZ retail locations.

The Disney Princess Magical Mirror – A child-sized princess castle anchors the Disney Princess neighborhood and inspires kids to make believe. As they walk under the iconic castle they encounter a magical mirror and with the wave of a wand, they watch in delight as their favorite Disney Princess character appears.

A customizable shopping experience – The new store concept also includes the launch of an all new in-store application where guests can customize their shopping experience. Accessed via an interactive kiosk with touch screen, this animated experience gives users the ability to navigate a 3-D view of all Disney Store and DisneyStore.com products and discover the latest Disney Store news via video clips, articles, and social media feeds.  This application allows the Disney Store to share its news to customers, who can then share information and in-store events via email, Twitter and Facebook.

The Disney Store Theatre – The newly designed stores will also feature a theater as part of its marquee attractions.  Guests can pick from a selection of pre-loaded content that will be updated regularly and can view classic and new Disney entertainment, sneak-peek previews, music videos and more. The theater will also serve for special in-store events such as reading time, scavenger hunts and more.

The “Pixie Dust Trail” and “Magical Trees”: With is glistening blue glitter, the Pixie Dust Trail leads guests through the store and to major interactive elements as they enjoy a Disney-themed skyline and surrounding magical trees which are programmable with changing colors, images, and music set to an array of Disney themes.

The newly-designed Disney Store is scheduled to open in the United States this year at the following locations:

- The Shops at Mission Viejo in Mission Viejo, CA, is anchored by luxury retailers and offers an extensive merchandise mix in a sophisticated atmosphere.  Disney Store will be located on the second level in a 5100 square feet space.

- Disney Store on North State Street in Chicago, IL, (Block 37 Complex) will anchor the southeast corner of the center in 4,464 square feet on level one of the mall.  The complex features an eclectic mix of shopping, dining and entertainment within a five-story atrium, located in the heart of Chicago’s Loop between Washington and Randolph on State Street.

- Freehold Raceway Mall in Freehold, NJ, offers a complete mix of department stores, specialty stores, restaurants and entertainment making the property an ideal location for the new Disney Store.

- NorthPark Center in Dallas, TX, offers shoppers the best in every retail category, and the newly-designed Disney Store opening this fall will represent its premier children’s retail store.

Other locations to feature the new Disney Store design opening this year include: Roosevelt Field Mall in Garden City, NY; Santa Monica Place in Santa Monica, CA;  International Plaza in Tampa, FL; Fashion Valley in San Diego, CA;  Disney Store in Union Square in San Francisco, CA; and a two-story Disney Store in Times Square in November.

As we exited the special event, members of the press were presented a Disney tote bag, a plush Mickey Mouse wearing the new Disney Store uniform, a keepsake book and informational ticket.

The first 500 guests (some lined up at 4:30 am) received a limited edition Disney Store set of Mouse Ears.

Disney’s goal is to create a world-class shopping experience by transforming the store into a magical destination. Their new tagline for their shops is “the best 30 minutes of a child’s day”.  Based on what I saw today, the retailer’s refresh will do just that!

iPhone 4 Sales Top 1.7 Million In 3 Days

Apple today announced that it has sold over 1.7 million of its iPhone 4 through Saturday, June 26, just three days after its launch on June 24. The new iPhone 4 features FaceTime, which makes video calling as easy as one tap, and Apple’s new Retina display, the highest resolution display ever built into a phone, resulting in stunning text, images and video.

“This is the most successful product launch in Apple’s history,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “Even so, we apologize to those customers who were turned away because we did not have enough supply.”

iPhone 4 also features a 5 megapixel camera with LED flash, HD 720p video recording, Apple’s A4 processor, a 3-axis gyro and up to 40 percent longer talk time—in a beautiful all-new design of glass and stainless steel that is the thinnest smartphone in the world.

Newly Restored Back To The Future 25th Anniversary Trilogy Arrives On Blu-ray And DVD On October 26, 2010

Disney Store Launches Magical New Store Design on June 29th In Montebello, California

On June 29, 2010 at 9 a.m., Disney Store will unveil its new store design for the first time, featuring a more interactive and technology-driven shopping experience.

The first-of-its-kind store will open in The Shops at Montebello in Montebello, Calif., just outside of Los Angeles featuring a floor-to-ceiling transformation that includes a new experiential Disney Princess neighborhood for girls and a first of its kind Disney●Pixar CARS experience for boys.

In attendance at the store’s grand opening will be Disney Store President Jim Fielding, Chairman of Disney Consumer Products Andy Mooney, Disney Store Montebello Manager Sonja Rodriguez, as well as special appearances by Disney celebrities and Toy Story characters Buzz, Woody, and Jessie.

“We have infused Disney magic into all elements of this one-of-a-kind retail experience, and have selected prime retail centers to launch the Disney Store of the future,” said Jim Fielding, president of Disney Stores Worldwide. “Special features like the iconic Disney Princess castle with magic mirror and the Disney Store Theater are just two of the amazing elements in the new store that will enrich every child and family’s experience at the Disney Store.”

Other elements said to be featured in the new Disney Store design include scents matching movie clips played in the store and displays that will interact with customers as they pass by holding various products.

More than 20 new and remodeled Disney Store locations are slated to open this year in premier retail centers throughout the United States. North American locations have been confirmed for Roosevelt Field Mall in Garden City, New York; Santa Monica Place in Santa Monica, California; International Plaza in Tampa, Florida; Stockton St. in San Francisco, CA; and Fashion Valley in San Diego, CA.

The Disney Store at International Plaza in Tampa, Fla. will be nearest to Orlando and the Walt Disney World Resort.

The European premiere of the new store designs will take place in early July in Madrid, Spain at La Vaguada. European locations cover four markets with openings in Spain, Portugal, Italy and the UK. These include NorteShopping in Oporto, Portugal; Orio Center in Bergamo, Italy; and UK locations including Centre MK in Milton Keynes, Parliament Street in York, Bon Accord Centre in Aberdeen and Donegal Place in Belfast.

The innovative new Disney Store design will feature many iconic elements, including a Disney Princess castle with magic mirror, where children are encouraged to play and interact. Each time a child waves a magic wand in front of the mirror a Disney Princess will appear, bringing the fairytale to life.

Chipotle Wants To Turn Your Junk E-Mail Into Healthy School Lunches

The restaurant chain Chipotle has launched a new campaign designed to turn your junk e-mail into healthier school lunches for kids.

The program –- called “No Junk” –- encourages people to forward their spam to nojunk@chipotlejunk.com. For every 100,000 messages received at that address, Chipotle plans to donate $10,000 to The Lunch Box, a non-profit organization that provides resources to schools to help them make their food programs healthier.

For Chipotle, the project aligns with the marketing messages you’ve likely seen if you’ve eaten at one of their restaurants, which emphasize the “naturally raised” animals and organically grown ingredients the company uses in its burritos. (Thanks for the tip D.T.)

As part of the Grounded story line that kicks off in July with issue No. 700 of DC Comics’ Superman series, the Man of Steel will walk across the USA to reconnect with the everyday people he is committed to protecting.

The story may be fictional, but many of the places and people that Superman will visit are real. DC Comics is asking readers to write in and campaign for their towns and residents to be depicted in the 13-issue Superman series.

Series writer J. Michael Straczynski and DC’s editorial team will select the featured locations. “Because Superman is a symbol of hope, I wanted folks to have a chance to bring Superman into their town, into their neighborhood, in the pages of the book,” Straczynski says.

“You have to remember that when Superman was initially created, his fights weren’t against vast interstellar forces. They were against criminals preying on the average guy,” Straczynski says. “Superman was created to be the ally of the average American, the guy who didn’t have lots of money or friends in high places.”

From poverty and drug-plagued neighborhoods to stories of hope and happiness, he will witness the best and the worst of everyday life.

“We will be asking hard questions, and Superman will learn the extent to which even he may not be able to change things,” Straczynski says. “But at the same time, we will explore the language of hope and feature the stubborn noble strength of the average man and woman trying to survive in a difficult and changing world. We will see Superman through the country’s eyes, and the country through Superman’s eyes.”
