Bruce Wayne And Dick Grayson Are Both Batman This Fall

This morning the NY Post confirmed what fans and observers have guessed all along. There will be 2 Batmen in November.

Beginning that month, Detective Comics, Batman and Batman and Robin will feature Dick Grayson as Batman (with the black Bat-symbol on his chest) with Damian Wayne as Robin, while Grant Morrison and Yanick Paquette’s Batman Inc. and David Finch’s Batman: The Dark Knight will both feature Bruce Wayne

“Just as readers were getting comfortable with the idea of former sidekick Dick Grayson playing the role of Batman, along comes Bruce Wayne’s triumphant return to the Cape and Cowl,” editor Mike Marts said. “Is Gotham City ready for two Batmen? Is the world? And who’s to say the fun will end there?”

“Bruce Wayne realizes that he can’t just be the grim avenger he was before,” DC co-publisher Dan DiDio told the Post. “He wants to be more aggressive in his reach, and realizes the change that Batman as a symbol can effect around the world.”

This approach mostly plays out in Morrison’s Batman Inc., where Bruce Wayne essentially franchises out the Dark Knight brand globally.

“Without giving too much away here, we wanted to show how Batman can have a global influence,” Didio said. Didio also revealed the troubled relationship between Bruce and Damian will be getting a lot of play in the coming months.

“So aside from the new interaction between the two Batmen, there’s the interesting relationship between Bruce Wayne and his son,” DiDio said.

Wanna Get Kids to Eat Carrots? Brand Them Like Junk Food

An ambitious new ad campaign by Crispin Porter + Bogusky tries to convince kids that baby carrots are like Doritos. (But what about the cheese dust?!)

Can the carrot industry sex up its image by branding baby carrots as a munchworthy junk food a la Cheetos or Lay’s Potato Chips? Crispin Porter + Bogusky seems to think so.

The high-profile ad agency is launching an ambitious $25 million campaign to help the carrot industry compete with the junk food industry. The campaign is being launched with the help of almost 50 carrot growers, including carrot behemoth Bolthouse Farms.

USA Today describes some of the ideas being tossed around: packaging carrots in snack food-like bags, selling them in vending machines (tests are already underway in school vending machines in Cincinnati and Syracuse, N.Y) , plastering carrot-themed billboards with slogans like “The original orange doodles,” and promoting seasonal tie-ins (the Halloween tie-in is “scarrots,” of course). The official campaign will launch next week, with a series of web ads and an iPhone app that will be flogged on

The ad campaign echoes the recent trend of fast food joints trying to gain new customers by touting the healthiness of their offerings (Wendy’s natural french fries, anyone?). And it takes advantage of one of Crispin’s strongest client bases, in junk food.

But carrots are ingrained in our minds as a healthy, family-friendly food from a young age — can an ad campaign really change that? And what happens when the kids eat the carrots — and discover they don’t taste nearly as good as Cheetos? (Reprinted from Fast Company)

Toy Story 3 Crosses the $1 Billion Mark Today

The Walt Disney Studios announced today that Toy Story 3 will surpass the $1 billion mark at the worldwide box office today. It marks the first time a studio will have two $1 billion movies in one year:

Two weeks after becoming the highest-grossing animated film of all time, Disney-Pixar’s Toy Story 3 will cross the $1 billion mark at the global box office today, joining Alice in Wonderland as the second $1 billion film this year from The Walt Disney Studios – the first studio in history to accomplish this feat. Disney first crossed the $1 billion threshold with Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest in 2006. Toy Story 3 becomes the only animated film to reach this milestone and the seventh title in industry history.

“It’s been an incredible year as we saw the Pixar team bring Buzz and Woody back to the big screen and watched Tim Burton’s vision for Alice in Wonderland take the world by storm,” said Rich Ross, Chairman, The Walt Disney Studios. “These box office triumphs prove that creative storytelling brought to life by imaginative, inspired and talented professionals is something audiences respond to the world over.”

As of Thursday (8/26/10), Toy Story 3 tallied more than $592.9 million internationally, Disney’s largest international animated release. Latin American audiences have contributed $138 million making Toy Story 3 the highest grossing Disney film ever released in the region. Toy Story 3 is the most successful UK release in Disney history and currently stands as the

fourth biggest title in territory history with $102.4 million in box office receipts so far. In Japan, the film has taken in $111.2 million and spent five consecutive weeks as the #1 movie. Toy Story 3 currently ranks as the #7 film in global box office history and domestically ranks #9 with $404.6 million in receipts to date.

Alice in Wonderland began setting records during its opening weekend (March 5-7), becoming the biggest March opening in industry history, the highest 3D opening ever and The Walt Disney Studios’ biggest opening for a non-sequel film. Internationally, the film went on to tally more than $690 million, becoming Disney’s biggest overseas release of all time and the fourth biggest title ever released overseas. Worldwide, the film took in $1.0243 billion, ranking it as the #5 film in global box office history.

The Top Ten Beatles Songs

In Rolling Stone’s new Special Collectors Edition issue, the music magazine counts down the 100 greatest songs from the greatest band of all time: The Beatles.

“The Beatles: 100 Greatest Songs” also features Paul and John talking about their favorite tracks, the Fab Four’s best cover songs, and George Harrison’s finest guitar work. “Lennon, McCartney and Harrison had stunningly high standards as writers,” Elvis Costello says in his introduction. “Then they started to really grow up: simple love lyrics to adult stories like ‘Norwegian Wood,’ which spoke of the sour side of love, and on to bigger ideas than you would expect to find in catchy pop lyrics.”

Check out the top 10 songs now, before the issue hits stands:

#10: “While My Guitar Gently Weeps”

The lyrics for George Harrison’s first truly great Beatles song began as a deliberate accident — and it wasn’t until Harrison pulled Eric Clapton in to play guitar that the arrangement was finished.

#9: “Come Together”

Originally intended by Lennon as a campaign song for LSD guru Timothy Leary’s campaign for California’s governor in 1970, this became the last song all four Beatles cut in the studio together.

#8: “Let It Be”

McCartney channeled Aretha Franklin’s soul in “Let It Be,” recorded during the peak of the Beatles’ troubled times. A month after its 1970 release, McCartney announced the band had broken up.

#7: “Hey Jude”

McCartney’s lyrics for “Hey Jude” were inspired by John and Cynthia Lennon’s five-year-old son, Julian — but Lennon first thought McCartney was singing to him about his relationship with Yoko Ono.

#6: “Something”

Before it became the second-most-covered Beatles song behind “Yesterday,” Lennon said this unexpected Harrison track was “the best track on [Abbey Road]” and McCartney called it “the best song [Harrison has] written.”

#5: “In My Life”

“In My Life,” featuring Lennon’s most personal lyrics up to the song’s release, is one of only a handful of Lennon-McCartney songs where the two strongly disagreed over who wrote what.

#4: “Yesterday”

The most covered song in history began as something called “Scrambled Eggs.” It also began as a dream.

#3: “Strawberry Fields Forever”

Lennon once said growing up “was scary because there was nobody to relate to.” Strawberry Field the place (a Liverpool children’s home near where Lennon grew up) represented those haunting childhood visions. With this song, Lennon conquered them forever.

#2: “I Want to Hold Your Hand”

“I Want to Hold Your Hand” was most American’s first exposure to the songwriting magic of Lennon and McCartney, setting off Beatlemania. It represented what producer George Martin calls “the apex of Phase One of the Beatles’ development.”

#1: “A Day in the Life”

The ultimate Lennon-McCartney collaboration, “A Day in the Life” wasn’t recognized as the band’s masterwork until the 80s, after Lennon’s death. It pairs lyrics inspired by the newspapers and Lennon’s own life with McCartney’s idea to have classical musicians perform what producer George Martin called an “orchestral orgasm.”

The Puzzleboard by OOOMS

The Puzzleboard by OOOMS (19,95 euro per board) can be used in more ways than one: each board can be used on its own as a cutting board or serving plate, or put some boards together and you have super-sized your workspace. It’s ideal for cutting those long baguettes! But the best thing is that any wineglass can be fitted into the blank spot of a board. Using the boards at parties allows guests to enjoy both wine & delicacies, while still having one hand free to greet other friends. (Thanks for the tip Meredith)
