Animated All-Star Superman Arrives On February 22, 2011 From Warner Home Video

Grant Morrison’s beloved, Eisner Award-winning vision of Superman’s heroic final days on Earth is brought to exquisite animated life in All-Star Superman, the latest entry in the popular, ongoing series of DC Universe Animated Original Movies coming February 22, 2011 from Warner Bros. Animation. The highly-anticipated, full-length film will be distributed by Warner Home Video as a Blu-Ray Combo Pack and 2-Disc Special Edition DVD for $24.98 (SRP), as well as single disc DVD for $19.98 (SRP). The film will also be available On Demand and for Download.

In All-Star Superman, the Man of Steel rescues an ill-fated mission to the Sun (sabotaged by Lex Luthor) and, in the process, is oversaturated by radiation – which accelerates his cell degeneration. Sensing even he will be unable to cheat death, Superman ventures into new realms – finally revealing his secret to Lois, confronting Lex Luthor’s perspective of humanity, and attempting to ensure Earth’s safety before his own impending end with one final, selfless act.

The celebrity-packed voice cast is headed by James Denton (Desperate Housewives) as Superman, Christina Hendricks (Mad Men) as Lois Lane, and Anthony LaPaglia (Without A Trace) as Lex Luthor. The stellar cast includes seven-time Emmy Award winner Ed Asner (Up) as Perry White, Golden Globe winner Frances Conroy (Six Feet Under) as Ma Kent, Matthew Gray Gubler (Criminal Minds) as Jimmy Olsen and Linda Cardellini (ER) as Nasty.

Arnold Vosloo (The Mummy), Catherine Cavadini (The Powerpuff Girls), Finola Hughes (General Hospital), Alexis Denisof (Angel), Obba Babatunde (That Thing You Do!), Michael Gough (Batman) and John DiMaggio (Futurama) round out the voice cast.

Based on the Eisner Award-winning DC Comics series/graphic novel of the same name by Grant Morrison with illustration by Frank Quitely, All-Star Superman is executive produced by animation guru Bruce Timm and directed by Sam Liu (Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths) from a script by acclaimed comics writer Dwayne McDuffie (Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths).

All-Star Superman 2-Disc Special Edition DVD features approximately 1 1/2 hours of exciting extra content, including:

- Feature film (est. 75 min)

- Sneak Peak at Green Lantern: Emerald Knights, the next DC Universe Animated Original Movie

- Featurette: “Superman Now” – In a moment of inspiration, Grant Morrison was provided an opportunity to revamp the Man of Steel into something modern, something more relevant for today’s audience. This is the story of All-Star Superman – where it all started, and what it came to be

- Two bonus episodes from animated television series handpicked by Bruce Timm

All-Star Superman Blu-Ray Combo Pack will include approximately 2 1/2 hours of intriguing bonus features, starting with all of the content available on the 2-Disc Special Edition DVD and adding:

- Featurette: “Incubating the Idea” – A conversation with Grant Morrison

- Audio Commentary: Bruce Timm and Grant Morrison

- All-Star Superman Digital Comic Book

- Standard and high definition versions of the feature film

- Digital copy on disc of the feature film

“The All-Star Superman comic was the work of two immensely talented creators at the absolute top of their game,” said Geoff Johns, Chief Creative Officer, DC Entertainment. “Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely’s All-Star Superman is one of those modern classics, and I can’t wait to see it brought to life as an animated film.”

“Grant Morrison’s fascinating comic vision comprised all the aspects of a truly great film – action, drama, fantasy, romance, sacrifice and hope – and the animation team of Bruce Timm, Sam Liu and Dwayne McDuffie have passionately translated that vision into an enthralling movie experience no Superman fan can resist,” said Hersin Magante, WHV Marketing Director of Family and Animation. “As the next entry in the ongoing series of DC Universe Animated Original Movies, All-Star Superman stands as a shining example of the creative heights possible from the partnership of Warner Premiere, DC Entertainment, Warner Bros. Animation and Warner Home Video.”

Indo Board Balance Trainer Review

The Indo Board Balance Trainer: Original Training Package ($144.95) offers a fun and challenging workout that develops balance, coordination and strength while enhancing core fitness. Hunter Joslin created his first balance board back in 1975 as a means for surfers to train and practice while not in the water.  Over time, the popularity of all board sports such as snowboarding, wakeboarding and skateboarding have increased dramatically, causing additional interest in balance board training. Additional users who desire to improve their physical conditioning have found that the Indo Board improves both balance and core strength. The Original Training Package consists of the Indo Board Deck, Roller, and IndoFLO Balance Cushion. The deck is shaped like an oval, with an acrylic like sheen but a slight gripping texture on the top of the board. The bottom of the board has wooden ends that catch the roller, and assist in trying to make sure that the roller does not slip out from under you. The deck measures 30″ x 18”, and can accommodate users up to 250 lbs. The roller is made of a sturdy plastic material and is quite strong and durable and measures 6.5″ in diameter. The inflatable IndoFLO Balance Cushion can be used as an alternative to the roller, and is perfect for the beginner user. You can adjust the degree of instability on the cushion by simply adding more or less air. Less inflation means more stability while inflating the cushion to its maximum creates the most instability. The basic difference between using the cushion versus the roller is that the deck does not actively roll on the cushion, it simply tilts offering a full circle of instability that is challenging in a fun way. The cushion measure 14″ diameter and is made of a polyvinyl material.  Indo boards come in a variety of shapes, sizes, and colors.  There is certain to be a model and design for every kind of taste and skill level. Cuisinart Smart Stick PLUS Review

The Cuisinart Smart Stick PLUS Cordless Rechargeable Hand Blender ($79.95) is a versatile kitchen tool that allows you to take the blender to the food, no matter where the food is located. Transferring hot soup back and forth into a typical blender can be a dangerous and difficult task. The Smart Stick PLUS allows you to take the mixing wand right to your stock pot and puree easily without the hassle of cords getting in the way. The blender is attractive and has a contemporary look, with its brushed stainless steel base and comfort grip black handle. It is both sturdy and well made, and offers a powerful DC motor for even the most challenging chopping or pureeing tasks. The hand blender has 3 pieces to its design: the handle, the motor body, and the detachable shaft.  The power plug is ingeniously hidden in the handle, and can be slid out to easily plug into an outlet for fast charging. Once fully charged, the hand blender can run continuously for up to 20 minutes, by simply pushing the on-off button located on the top of the handle. The Smart Stick PLUS is much more than a hand blender. It comes complete with a Chopper / Grinder Attachment, which is a small mixing bowl that attaches to the wand and becomes a mini food processor. Inside the prep bowl, there is a reversible blade with a sharp side and a blunt side.  The sharp side can be used for such items as herbs or onions, while the blunt side can be used for items such as hard cheeses or nuts.  In addition to the Chopper / Grinder Attachment, there is also a Whisk Attachment that easily snaps into the motor body.  Perfect for whisking up the perfect omelets or making fresh whipping cream by hand. Also included in the set is a handy Mixing / Measuring Cup.  This dishwasher safe container allows you to view the precise measurements for mixing up your favorite vinaigrette dressing or protein shake. The folks at Cuisinart have thought of everything, they have also included a storage stand that can be used as a counter top holder or comes complete with mounting hardware to free up your counter-space. If you have never tried using a hand blender, you might consider adding this versatile piece of equipment to your kitchen. After making fresh salsa and pesto easily from scratch, you’ll soon wonder how you ever lived without one before. (Reviewed by Meredith Fire-Hess)

Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark, A Broadway Musical

The December issue of Vogue features some amazing photos by Annie Leibovitz from the set of the upcoming Broadway musical “Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark”. Directed by Julie Taymor, it features music by Bono and The Edge. Previews at Foxwoods Theatre begin on November 28th with the show offically opening on January 11th.

In 1962, the Marvel Comics legend Stan Lee came up with a story about a teenage geek named Peter Parker who gets bitten by a radioactive spider at a science exhibit and discovers that he has acquired superhuman strength, extrasensory perception, and the ability to crawl up walls—not to mention a flair for costume design. As drawn by Steve Ditko, a cultural icon named Spider-Man was born, and since then he has swung from the comic-book page to the cineplex screen and into our dream life, fighting crime on the streets of New York and protecting mankind from villains bent on global domination. Now the world’s most famous webslinger is facing his scariest adversaries yet—New York theater critics and audiences—as Julie Taymor’s long-delayed rock musical Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark, with songs by U2’s Bono and the Edge, finally drops in on Broadway in January.

Mary Jane (Jennifer Damiano) falls into the clutches of the Green Goblin (Patrick Page). Will Spider-Man save the day?

“I feel more invincible onstage than anywhere else,” says Reeve Carney, who performs the title role (dancer and gymnast Emmanuel Brown, pictured here, is a stunt double).

Mary Jane fends off the multibladed Swiss Miss (Sean Samuels). “There are a lot of comic-book nerds out there who are in love with Mary Jane,” says Damiano. “I don’t want to let them down.”

The ill-intentioned Carnage (Collin Baja) goes after Mary Jane. Says Taymor: “I saw the inherent theatricality in it, and I couldn’t resist.”

Carney and Damiano as the star-crossed Peter and Mary Jane.

More Than 450K Beatles Albums Sold In First Week

The iTunes Store saw worldwide sales of more than 450,000 Beatles albums in the group’s first week of availability. Citing internal sales figures from Apple, Billboard reports that more than 2 million individual songs by The Beatles were sold during the period; Abbey Road was the top-selling Beatles album in the U.S., while the top selling song was “Here Comes the Sun,” one of five songs chosen by Apple for use in its promotional TV advertisements. Notably, it is unclear whether the total album figure counts the band’s career-spanning Box Set as one or multiple albums, as the $149 set is currently listed at number 50 on the U.S. iTunes Store’s Top Albums chart.

iBend and iBendXL Review

Have you ever tried to watch a movie on your iPhone or iPad with no place to prop up your device for easy viewing?  iBends are made of a durable, flexible vinyl and offer a lightweight, thin and portable viewing solution. The iBend works with your iPhone, iPod touch, as well as a host of other devices that are thin enough to fit within the grooves, while the iBendXL was designed specifically for the iPad. The iBendXL is sturdy enough to support both vertical and landscape viewing. To use, simply pinch in both ends to form a semi-circle, and slide your device into the grooves.  To adjust the angle, simply slide the ends closer together or further apart. The iBend comes in a small cardboard package that is perforated, so that the two stands can be separated. Perhaps two for you or why not share, suggests the wording on one half of the packaging, should you see someone struggling to hold up their device.  The iBend Classic comes in a Duo set, 1 black and 1 white for $4.99 or you can choose one of the eye-catching artist series designs, 2 for $5.99. The iBendXL comes in a single sheet in black or white, that retails for $9.99. Simply punch out the stand from the perforations, and you are all set for use. The nice folks at iBend have graciously offered a 20% discount on each iBendXL that you purchase.  To receive this discount, simply enter in the promo code FIREWIRE here.  I really love this product. Given the reasonable price and slender profile, you can easily stash several in your briefcase, wallet, around the house or office, so that you always have a stand handy. Lonely Planet Names The 10 Best Bookstores In The World

Lonely Planet, a publisher in the business of providing guides to all corners of the globe, has posted its list of the 10 best bookstores in the world. It reads like a travelogue wish list for the bookishly inclined.

There’s Lello Bookshop in Lisbon (pictured), a neo-gothic extravaganza with serpentine staircases that opened in 1906. Bookàbar in Rome, Atlantis Books in Greece, Selexyz Dominicanen in the Netherlands, Another Country in Berlin and Paris’ Shakespeare & Company to round out the European selections. Their London bookseller of choice is travel bookseller Daunt Books.

Only a single Asian bookstore makes the list: The Bookworm in Bejing, which has, in addition to books for sale and for loan, an annual book festival and celebrations of wine and whiskey.

In the Americas, Buenos Aires’ Librería El Ateneo Grand Splendid, housed in a 1920s movie palace saved from destruction, is often cited as one of the world’s most beautiful. And then there’s City Lights in San Francisco, less gorgeous than iconic, known for being the literary hub of the beat scene.

Of the list of 10, three appeared in a similar list of the top 10 bookstores put together by The Guardian in 2008. One that made their list, which Lonely Planet missed, is Los Angeles’ own Secret Headquarters, “known for being one of the neatest, friendliest comic stores anywhere.” (Reprinted from the L.A. Times, Thanks for the tip Mike Brady)

Mark Romanek To Direct Joe Hill’s Locke & Key Pilot For Fox

While Mark Romanek figures out what film he’ll tackle next following “Never Let Me Go,” the director will follow the in the footsteps that many filmmakers seem to be making these days, and will direct a pilot for Fox.

Deadline reports that Romanek is in negotiations to direct the inaugural episode of the comic adaptation “Locke & Key.” With a script from Josh Friedman (”War Of The Worlds,” “The Black Dahlia”).

The series starts when the Locke family, recently bereaved of their father, move to Keyhouse, a mysterious mansion in which every door leads to a different place, either in this world or another, and around which some curious, magical keys are to be found. There are ghosts and creaky floorboards and huge, ambitious story arcs, lots of echoes and shadows and strong feeling that what you’re reading is Story with a capital S.”

Certainly, it sounds like it will give Romanek to chance to exercise some of the gothic horror muscles he developed on “The Wolfman” before exiting the project. Regardless of what you think of his films, Romanek is a master visualist and working within the milieu presented with “Locke & Key” sounds very promising.

No word on when the series might be seen on TVs, but the fall 2011 season seems like a safe bet. (Thanks for the tip D.T.)
