MONDO To Celebrate The Movies of Paul Thomas Anderson With 5 New Prints

Mondo, the collectible art division of Alamo Drafthouse Cinema, proudly announces a new poster series centered around Paul Thomas Anderson’s dynamic films. Over his career, P.T. Anderson has been named as “one of the most exciting talents to come along in years” by the New York Times, and is revered as one of the greatest directors of all time. Curated by Aaron Horkey, one of Mondo’s most popular and respected artists, the series will feature posters for Hard Eight, Boogie Nights, Magnolia, Punch Drunk Love, and There Will Be Blood.

“This was my first large-scale curatorial project. It was much more work than I had anticipated, but the end result is something I’m incredibly proud of,” said Aaron Horkey.  “It’s been great to see the series come to life and I’d like to thank Mondo for the opportunity, especially Mitch Putnam for helping me with logistics and general organization. Also, thanks to Paul Thomas Anderson for being open to the project and of course all the artists involved – everyone came through brilliantly and certainly salvaged the project before I had a chance to run it into the ground.”

Each print will be available for purchase online. Follow @MondoNews for exact sale times.

Latest Poster For Guillermo Del Toro’s Pacific Rim

Legendary Entertainment has released a poster for Guillermo del Toro’s Pacific Rim that features the armored Jaeger robots assembling to take on a Kaiju threat.

Opening in 3D, 2D and IMAX theaters on July 12, Pacific Rim stars Charlie Hunnam, Idris Elba, Rinko Kikuchi, Charlie Day, Ron Perlman, Robert Kazinsky, Max Martini, Clifton Collins, Jr., Burn Gorman, Larry Joe Campbell, Brad William Henke and Diego Klattenhoff.

When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity’s resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes—a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi)—who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. Together, they stand as mankind’s last hope against the mounting apocalypse.

Olly Moss Pays Homage To The Simpsons With His “Stop The Planet of The Apes, I Want To Get Off” Musical Poster

Today Olly Moss made a quick poster for his wall based on his favorite musical of all time, “Stop The Planet of The Apes, I Want To Get Off”

 BJMA2nsCEAAhC3_.png-large

The title of the musical is a Simpson’s parody of the musical Stop the World – I Want to Get Off! The song “Dr. Zaius” is a parody of the song “Rock Me Amadeus” by Falco. The music was written by Alf Clausen and the lyrics by Jack Barth.

The song is featured in “A Fish Called Selma” which is the nineteenth episode of The Simpsons’ seventh season and originally aired on March 24, 1996. The episode sees Troy McClure attempt to resurrect his acting career by marrying Selma Bouvier. Show runners Bill Oakley and Josh Weinstein were fans of Phil Hartman and wished to produce an episode which focused on his character McClure. Freelance writer Jack Barth wrote the episode, and Mark Kirkland directed it.

Mike Mitchell Solo Art Show To Open April 26th At The Mondo Gallery

tumblr_mkak1ahL0T1qzlfumo2_1280

Mondo, the collectible art division of Alamo Drafthouse Cinema, announces its next gallery show featuring the artwork of Mike Mitchell which will run from April 26th to May 25th at the Mondo Gallery located at 4115 Guadalupe St. in Austin, TX. The Mondo Mike Mitchell show will feature a series of portraits as limited edition giclees for subjects that range from crowd favorites to characters that are slightly underappreciated in pop culture art. The gallery will open to the public on April 26th from 7:00 – 10:00 pm with regular business hours to follow for the show’s duration.

Commenting on his artwork, Mike Mitchell said, “for the portrait series, I wanted to keep the personalities there, at least how they exist in my own mind. Then apply that to a traditional portrait, something that most of these characters wouldn’t be doing. There’s an ironic sense about them that I like, but I also just really love these dudes for who they are, and I didn’t want to take too much of that away. When I watch a movie and really connect with a character, I often feel a strong urge to draw/paint that person. This show is allowing me to do that, it’s giving me the chance to catch up on years of great characters that I appreciate and admire.”

Heritage Comics Celebrates Its 50th Signature Auction, May 16-18, In Dallas With The Best Grouping of Frank Miller Dark Knight Artwork Ever Offered In A Single Auction

7076ComicCatCoverFrontFinal_hr-page-001

The best grouping of Frank Miller Dark Knight artwork ever to be offered in a single auction, led by one of the most evocative images from the famed series, The Dark Knight Returns #2 Batman and Robin Splash Page 36 Original Art (DC, 1986), estimated at $75,000+, depicting a seriously wounded and determined Bruce Wayne in a fatherly embrace with his protégé Robin (Carrie Kelly), will cross the block on May 17 in Dallas as the highlight lot in Heritage Auctions’ Comics and Original Comic Art Signature Auction.

lf

“This drawing encompasses everything that the relationship between Batman and Robin represented as Miller re-imagined and re-energized the franchise,” said Todd Hignite, Vice President of Heritage Auctions. “This is the story many fans consider the greatest Batman story ever told and this is one of the greatest, most evocative moments in the entire story. It’s a truly transcendent image from one of the great comic sagas of all time.”

The Dark Knight splash page is complemented in the auction by two more Miller interior masterpieces – The Dark Knight #3 Clark Kent/Bruce Wayne Page 14 Original Art (DC, 1986), estimated at $40,000+, and The Dark Knight Returns #2 Batman and Robin Ride the Batcycle Page 38 Original Art (DC, 1986), estimated at $30,000+.

lf-1

lf-2

The latter is a study in contrast between DC’s twin icons, Superman and Batman, in their secret identities as Clark Kent and Bruce Wayne, while the former stars Batman, Robin, Commissioner Gordon and an appearance of the Batcycle.

Additional collectibles that will be auctioned at the event are: a high grade copy of Amazing Spider-Man 15, the first appearance of Spider-Man, Todd McFarlane’s Amazing Spider-Man #324 Sabretooth cover original art, Dave Gibbons Watchmen #6 “Rorschach Inkblot” cover original art, a near Mint Daredevil #1 and a near mint Batman #3!
