bestinventions

What makes an invention great? Sometimes it solves a problem you didn’t think could be solved. Skyscrapers can’t turn invisible. Pens can’t write in midair. Paraplegics can’t walk. Except now they can. And sometimes an invention solves a problem you didn’t know you had. Maybe you didn’t realize you needed to eat a doughnut and a croissant at the same time, or resurrect an extinct frog, or turn your entire body into a living password. Now you do. Check out TIME’s list of the best things that were invented in 2013.

Hero Complex Film Festival 2013 Will Feature Appearances By Guillermo del Toro, Frank Darabont, Roland Emmerich & More

Visionary genre talents Guillermo del Toro, Frank Darabont, Roland Emmerich, John Carpenter and Chris Carter will be among the special guests at the fourth annual Hero Complex Film Festival, set to take place May 10-12 at the Chinese 6 Theatres in Hollywood.

The festival will open May 10 with a double feature from writer-director Carpenter — a 25th anniversary screening of “They Live” and a 35th anniversary screening of his landmark horror film “Halloween.” The always candid and entertaining Carpenter will appear in person between the films to discuss his career, which has produced genre favorites such as “Assault on Precinct 13,” “Escape From New York,” “The Thing,” “Big Trouble in Little China,” “Starman” and many more.

On May 11, writer-director Darabont will be on hand for an afternoon screening of his 2007 Stephen King adaptation “The Mist,” the riveting tale of a strange storm that settles over a New England town and forever changes the fortunes of the people trapped in its midst.

Del Toro is set to take the stage the evening of May 11 between a rare theatrical presentation of his 2001 ghost story “The Devil’s Backbone” and a screening of his Oscar-winning fantasy “Pan’s Labyrinth.” The busy director is preparing to return to the world of smaller-budget thrills with his upcoming Victorian-era tale “Crimson Peak,” but next up for Del Toro is his massive robots-versus-kaiju movie “Pacific Rim,” which storms into the multiplex July 12.

May 12 will bring more out-of-this-world adventures with a matinee showing of “Independence Day” with director Emmerich. The filmmaker, whose credits also include “The Patriot” and “Anonymous” in addition to “Stargate,” “The Day After Tomorrow” and “2012,” among others, is set to return to the big screen with a new summer spectacle film in “White House Down,” starring Channing Tatum and Jamie Foxx, due June 28.

Closing out the festival will be a special 20th anniversary tribute to “The X-Files” with Carter, the show’s creator. We’ll screen three fan-favorite episodes of the landmark series that premiered back in 1993 — the show’s pilot and two stand-alone installments, “Clyde Bruckman’s Final Repose” and “Jose Chung’s From Outer Space.”

Tickets are available now for $20 per event, with a limited number of special festival passes available for $50. Los Angeles Times members receive a 50% discount
