“My love for Marvel Comics was an integral part of growing up. Not just the comics, but the action figures, video games and cartoons. My intention with this show was to take those characters out of their action-oriented world and give them a moment of silence to catch their breath. There’s a humanizing quality to that which I find extremely interesting. This has easily been the most ambitious project I’ve ever taken on, and it’s due in part to my love for their universe; which is fictional by definition, but real in my mind and in the minds of others,” said Mitchell.

The Marvel villain MODOK has also taken over MONDO Gallery, with a super-sized cutout adorning the exterior of the building.

Amazing_Spider_Man_1.1_Cover

This May, following the debut of the highly anticipated return of Peter Parker in Amazing Spider-Man #1, experience his early days as Spider-Man like you’ve never seen before in Learning to Crawl, a new 5-issue series beginning in Amazing Spider-Man #1.1! New York Times Bestselling writer Dan Slott (Superior Spider-Man, Silver Surfer) and Eisner Award-Winning Artist Ramón Pérez (Wolverine and the X-Men, Tale of Sand) craft an all-new spin on the earliest days of the webbed wonder that have bitter consequences to this very day!

From that fateful night he lost his Uncle Ben, a new life began. But there is more to the story of how Peter Parker became the Amazing Spider-Man.

“We all love a good ‘Year One’ story,” says Senior Editor Nick Lowe. “But this is so much MORE! Not only does this address Spider-Man’s past, but it sets up a new villain that will be a huge part of Dan Slott’s AMAZING SPIDER-MAN plans moving forward.”

We all know how Peter Parker learned responsibility, but this series tells the story of how Spider-Man became the super hero we all know and love!  Set within the first 60 days of his webslinging career, Learning to Crawl is an all-new tale set parallel to the character’s first appearance in 1962’s Amazing Fantasy #15 and 1963’s Amazing Spider-Man #1 – #3 that will blaze new trails for upcoming Amazing Spider-Man story arcs in Dan Slott’s new series!

“It’s one thing to know that with great power comes great responsibility, but what do you do with it?” says series writer Dan Slott, in an interview with Marvel.com.

Fans eagerly awaiting Learning to Crawl can get their first taste early with a special 8-page lead-in story from Slott & Pérez in the back of the highly anticipated Amazing Spider-Man #1 later this month!

Now is your chance to experience the story you never knew about the story you know by heart! How did Peter Parker rise to the occasion to become the greatest hero the world has ever seen? And who is the mysterious new villain Clash? All will be answered when the exciting Amazing Spider-Man #1.1 – the first chapter of Learning to Crawl – swings into comic shops on May 7, 2014!

Peter David Announces Adaptation of Stephen King’s Dark Tower II: The Drawing of The Three

During his Emerald City Comicon Secret Origins panel, Peter David was asked by a member of the audience whether he enjoyed the collaboration with his co-creators on the “Dark Tower” comics. Rather than answer directly, he revealed the Marvel adaptations of Stephen King’s fantasy epic will resume with “Dark Tower II: The Drawing of the Three.” He also provided the ‘secret origin’ of how the project was greenlit.

“We are going to be doing more ‘Dark Tower.’ ‘The Drawing of the Three’ will actually be happening in comic book form,” David stated. “We are very, very pleased about that. I literally just got an email about this, two days ago. And it’s really funny — would you like to know why we’re doing more ‘Dark Tower?’ OK, no — well, yes, but — OK. Funny story! [Laughs]

“I had a stroke about a year and a couple months ago, and I was in a recovery center down in Jacksonville, FL, because I had the stroke down in Orlando, FL, during our vacation to Disney World,” David continued. “Go to Disney World, have a stroke and then go see Goofy! [Laughter] Because you’re both going [imitates Goofy's laugh]! At any rate, so — I get an email from Robin Furth, who is my co-writer on ‘Dark Tower,’ and she says, ‘Stephen would like your email. Can I give him your email address?’ So I go, ‘Sure!’ So I get an email from Stehen King, and Stephen says, ‘I’d like to come up and visit you, you know, up in the hospital. I’m down in Florida.’ And I went, ‘OK – sure!’ And he drove up. And I thought that he was in Jacksonville. No — he was five hours away. He did a five hour drive to come up and see me, because I think he was really relating to the concept that I was having to teach myself how to walk again. Because he had to go through the same thing when he got hit by that van, so this was really his wheelhouse. And while he was there, I said to him, ‘You know, we should really do more ‘Dark Tower,’ ’cause I get a lot of people coming up to me, saying, “I want to see ‘The Drawing of the Three.’ I want to see the next book.”‘ And Steve said, ‘Really?’ And I went, ‘Yeah!’ and he says, ‘OK — we’ll do that!’ And then he contacted Marvel Comics, and… Marvel went, ‘OK!’ And lo and behold, now we’re doing ‘Dark Tower’ again, so thank God I had a stroke!”

Warner Bros. Entertainment & DC Entertainment Celebrate Batman’s 75th Anniversary

Batman75_logo_1COLOR_blk_580_53337eb4cb4440.11378405

To mark the milestone 75th anniversary of DC Comics’ Batman, Warner Bros. Entertainment and DC Entertainment have revealed plans for a year-long celebration befitting the world’s most popular Super Hero.  Highlights of the anniversary program, which starts today, include a new commemorative 75th anniversary Batman logo and an exclusive “Cape/Cowl/Create” art exhibit, featuring 20 contemporary artists’ interpretation of The Dark Knight’s iconic cowl headpiece and cape from the upcoming Batman: Arkham Knight videogame.  There will also be 75th anniversary-related activities across all of Warner Bros. Entertainment throughout the year.

First appearing in the comic book Detective Comics #27, which hit newsstands on March 30, 1939, featuring artwork by Bob Kane and a script by Bill Finger, Batman emerged from the shadows to become the world’s most popular Super Hero and dominate all media.  In feature films, TV shows, radio, video games, publishing and merchandise, this most human of Super Heroes has battled some of fiction’s greatest villains using his intellect, cunning and an arsenal of gadgets to further his quest for justice.

“Batman is an incredibly important property with multi-generational appeal across all of the Studio’s businesses, and we’re proud to celebrate this milestone anniversary,” said Kevin Tsujihara, Chief Executive Officer, Warner Bros. Entertainment.  “From billion-dollar blockbuster films to TV, home entertainment, video games and consumer products, The Dark Knight continues to resonate with audiences worldwide and rightfully deserves his place as a global pop culture icon for the ages.”

Batman is the single most successful Super Hero film franchise in history and there have been more theatrical movies released based on Batman than any other comic book character.  In video games, the Batman Arkham franchise is also the most successful Super Hero game concept ever.  Batman consistently breaks records in every incarnation of his character and remains the gold standard by which all other comic book sales are measured.

“Batman is one of the greatest characters ever created, in comics or elsewhere, and even after 75 years he continues to wildly fascinate fans.  He is an integral part of pop culture and has successfully captured the imagination of the entire world,” said Diane Nelson, President of DC Entertainment and President & Chief Content Officer, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment.  “The origin of Batman, Bruce Wayne and the famous citizens of Gotham are legendary and likely a story you know inside out, even if you’ve never picked up a comic book in your life, and that speaks volumes to the character’s immense popularity and the constructs of the original mythology.”

The first published adventure of The Bat-Man (as he was then known) was in the May 1939 issue of  Detective Comics #27, conceived of and drawn by a 22-year-old Kane with his frequent collaborator, Bill Finger, scripting the story. The character was so successful, that one year later the first comic book devoted exclusively to the Caped Crusader’s adventures, Batman #1, hit newsstands. In that issue, Batman battled The Joker and Catwoman for the first time.

Now, DC Entertainment and the Studio’s various divisions, including Pictures, Television, Animation, Interactive Entertainment, Home Entertainment and Consumer Products, will mark this extraordinary 75th anniversary with a range of highly anticipated events and products.

The new commemorative logo, also released today across social media and websites, takes its cue from the famed Bat symbol, and features block-style lettering of “75 Years.”  The mark will be rolled out on Batman-related promotions, products and initiatives.

Fox Debuts Gotham Series Overview & Logo

GOTHAM-CAROUSEL-DESKTOP-carousel-1400x386-7c642

Fox’s DC Comics-based “Gotham” took another step closer to TV screens this week, with the debut of its logo and a series description.

The description established that a central “Gotham” premise will be the “brave, honest and ready to prove himself” James Gordon (series lead Ben McKenzie) and “brash but shrewd police legend” Harvey Bullock (Donal Logue) stumbling upon the murder of Thomas and Martha Wayne. Gordon then forms an “inexplicable kinship” with 12-year-old, pre-Batman, Bruce Wayne (David Mazouz), and vows to catch his parents’ killer.

The “Gotham” cast also includes Camren Bicondova as Selina Kyle, Zabryna Guevara as Captain Essen, Erin Richards as Barbara Kean, Sean Pertwee as Alfred Pennyworth, Robin Lord Taylor as Oswald Cobblepot/The Penguin and Jada Pinkett Smith as Fish Mooney. “Gotham,” executive produced and written by Bruno Heller, has a series commitment at Fox and is one of multiple DC-based shows in active network development for the 2014-2015 television season (along with “The Flash” and “iZombie” at The CW, and “Constantine” at NBC).

Everyone knows the name Commissioner Gordon. He is one of the crime world’s greatest foes, a man whose reputation is synonymous with law and order. But what is known of Gordon’s story and his rise from rookie detective to Police Commissioner? What did it take to navigate the multiple layers of corruption that secretly ruled Gotham City, the spawning ground of the world’s most iconic villains? And what circumstances created them – the larger-than-life personas who would become Catwoman, The Penguin, The Riddler, Two-Face and The Joker?

James Gordon Ben McKenzie

Gotham is an origin story of the great DC Comics super villains and vigilantes, revealing an entirely new chapter that has never been told. From executive producer/writer Bruno Heller (“The Mentalist,” “Rome”), Gotham follows one cop’s rise through a dangerously corrupt city teetering on the edge of evil and chronicles the birth of one of the most popular super heroes of our time.

Growing up in Gotham City’s surrounding suburbs, James Godon (Ben McKenzie, “Southland,” “The O.C.”) romanticized the city as a glamorous and exciting metropolis where his late father once served as a successful district attorney. Now, two weeks into his new job as a Gotham City detective and engaged to his beloved fiancée, Barbara Kean (Erin Richards, “Open Grave,” “Breaking In”), Gordon is living his dream – even as he hopes to restore the city back to the pure version he remembers it was as a kid.

Brave, honest and ready to prove himself, the newly-minted detective is partnered with the brash, but shrewd police legend Harvey Bullock (Donal Logue, “Sons of Anarchy,” “Terriers,” “Vikings,” “Copper”), as the two stumble upon the city’s highest-profile case ever: the murder of local billionaires Thomas and Martha Wayne.

Harvey Bullock Donal Logue

At the scene of the crime, Gordon meets the sole survivor: the Waynes’ hauntingly intense 12-year-old son, Bruce (David Mazouz, “Touch”), toward whom the young detective feels an inexplicable kinship. Moved by the boy’s profound loss, Gordon vows to catch the killer.

Bruce Wayne David Mazouz

As he navigates the often-underhanded politics of Gotham’s criminal justice system, Gordon will confront imposing gang boss Fish Mooney (Jada Pinkett Smith, “The Matrix” films, “HawthoRNe,” “Collateral”), and many of the characters who will become some of fiction’s most renowned, enduring villains, including a teenaged Selina Kyle/the future Catwoman (acting newcomer Camren Bicondova) and Oswald Cobblepot/The Penguin (Robin Lord Taylor, “The Walking Dead,” “Another Earth”).

Fish Mooney

Although the crime drama will follow Gordon’s turbulent and singular rise through the Gotham City police department, led by Police Captain Sarah Essen (Zabryna Guevara, “Burn Notice”), it also will focus on the unlikely friendship Gordon forms with the young heir to the Wayne fortune, who is being raised by his unflappable butler, Alfred (Sean Pertwee, “Camelot,” “Elementary”). It is a friendship that will last them all of their lives, playing a crucial role in helping the young boy eventually become the crusader he’s destined to be.

Gotham is based upon characters published by DC Comics and is produced by Warner Bros. Television. Executive producer Bruno Heller (“The Mentalist”) wrote the pilot, which will be directed and executive-produced by Emmy Award nominee Danny Cannon (the “CSI” series, “Nikita”).

DC Revives Batman/Superman Comic, Issue One Planned For June 2013

comics-batman-superman

DC fans have been hoping that the comic publisher would revive the team up of Batman and Superman in the New 52. The comic book series will be relaunched this June titled Batman/Superman. USA Today revealed that World War Hulk writer Greg Pak will pen the new series with The Inhumans artist Jae Lee drawing.

The title will differ from Justice League and other instances in the New 52 where the characters team up by focusing instead on the time these two characters met for the first time.

Batman/Superman marks Jae Lee and Pak’s first time working directly together — Lee had done covers for the 2005 Marvel miniseries Marvel Nemesis: The Imperfects, one of Pak’s earliest comics.
