Mondo Announces ‘The Art of Jock’ Retrospective

Not content with a comic book career that includes DC Entertainment’s Batman and The Losers, 2000AD’s Judge Dredd and his creator-owned Wytches, Jock has also created concept artwork for a number of movies including Ex Machine, X-Men: Days of Future Past and the Dark Knight trilogy. Now, a new career retrospective from Mondo will reveal even more of the British artist’s work.

The collection, tentatively titled The Art of Jock, will feature material from throughout the artist’s entire career from 2000AD through a long collaboration with DC Entertainment (including work on Green Arrow: Year One and Hellblazer) to his movie work. It marks a continuation of his relationship with Mondo, for which he’s previously created limited edition artwork for a number of movies, including The Thing, Zero Dark Thirty and Iron Man 3.

While this exhibition marks the first full career retrospective for Jock, it’s not the first time his movie work has seen print; 2000AD has previous published a collection of his Dredd concept art to accompany Alex Garland’s script for the 2012 movie, as well as a limited-edition portfolio of his Ex Machina work for this year’s San Diego Comic-Con.

The book — Mondo’s first, created in partnership with Insight Editions — continues the expansion of the company known primarily for its screen print artwork for classic and contemporary movie, TV show and comic book properties. In recent months, the Austin, Texas house has experimented with action figures, clothing (including some amazing holiday sweaters) and vinyl soundtrack releases.

“I’m so proud to be working with my friends at Mondo and Insight to put together the first extensive collection of my work,” Jock said in a statement. “It’s been a labor of love for months already, and we can’t wait to share more details. We’re working hard to make this as special an edition as it can be.”

The Art of Jock is scheduled for release September 2016.(reprinted from The Hollywood Reporter)

Daredevil Reborn Covers By Jock

Lately I have been on a Jock kick, wait a minute…that didn’t sound right. I’m talking about the comic book artist Mark Simpson, known by the pen name Jock, the British comics artist and writer, best known for his work in 2000 AD, The Losers, Batman, Wolverine and Daredevil Reborn.

Daredevil: Reborn was written by Andy Diggle and illustrated by Davide Gianfelice with covers by Jock. The four-issue 2011 comic book limited series was published by Marvel Comics and followed the events of Shadowland in which Matt Murdock left Hell’s Kitchen behind and visited Mexico.

I know I am a few years behind in posting these fantastic covers but I just stumbled upon them and had to share. You can purchase the softcover graphic novel of Daredevil Reborn HERE.

Image Announces New Scott Snyder & Jock Comic Book “Wytches” Arriving In September 2014

Yesterday at the Image Expo 2014 in San Francisco, American Vampire” and “Batman” writer Scott Snyder shared that he would explore the world of witches in a new Image comic book series called “Wytches” with his “Detective Comics” collaborator Jock on art.

Here is the press release regarding the project:

Scott Snyder (Batman, Superman Unchained, Severed) and Jock (Batman, Wolverine, Snapshot) will team up for a new, ongoing horror series called Wytches. Everything you thought you knew about witches is wrong. They are much darker, and they are much more horrifying.

Wytches takes the mythology of witches to a far creepier, bone-chilling place than readers have dared venture before. “I like taking classic monsters and reimagining them in a fresh, contemporary, and much scarier way,” said Snyder.

Snyder and Jock have worked together previously on the Batman story “The Black Mirror” in the pages of Detective Comics and Snyder knew from the get-go that he wanted Jock on board.

“It’s great to finally have Scott Snyder back at Image,” said Image Comics Publisher Eric Stephenson. “We loved working with Scott on Severed, and he has only gotten better since then, so it’s really wonderful that he’s teaming up with Jock on what is without a doubt one of the creepiest books we have ever published.”

Wytches is a new ongoing fantasy horror series coming to Image Comics in September 2014. You’ve been warned.
