Watchmen’s Black Freighter DVD

Warner Brothers has released the cover art and more details for its Watchmen DVD tie-in, the adaptation of the comic-within-the-comic, Tales of the Black Freighter. Interestingly, the Gerard Butler voiced animated tale won’t be the only thing on the DVD. We’ll also be treated to Under the Hood, Hollis Mason’s look at how the costumed crusaders came into being. The
second story will be a mix of live-action and CG and will feature the major players from the movie.

Tales of the Black Freighter will be available on both DVD and Blu-ray, and I have to say Blu-ray will be the better deal here. With both formats you get “Story Within a Story: The Books of the Watchmen,” which looks at the two shorts on the DVD and how they tie in with the movie. You also get a sneak peek at the “Watchmen Motion Comic” (chapter 1) and a “First Look” at the upcoming Green Lantern DVD. But Blu-ray purchasers also get a deleted scene from the Watchmen movie titled “The Two Bernies” and an additional featurette: “The ‘Why’ of the Watchmen,” which features director Zack Snyder. If you’re a hardcore Watchmen fan (and you probably are if you’re picking this up) those sound a lot more interesting than a first look at Green Lantern.

Tales of the Black Freighter will be in stores on March 24th.
