Javier Bardem & Viggo Mortensen Rumored As Frontrunners For Stephen King’s ‘The Dark Tower’

The upcoming Universal-led multi-platform, mega franchise launch of the adaptation of the seven novel strong “The Dark Tower” is going to be one monster of a project, using both film and television to tell the tale based on Stephen King‘s expansive world. And while director Ron Howard hasn’t shied away from talking about a bevy of names mentioned for the lead role including Daniel Craig, Hugh Jackman and Jon Hamm, it appears a new candidate and a fan favorite are apparently the frontrunners for the gig.

According to sources speaking to the NY Post, Javier Bardem is the frontrunner for Roland Deschain, the gunslinger who searches for the mysterious castle which may or may not be the nexus of the universe, with Viggo Mortensen, running close behind. Word on the street is that given the “The Dark Tower” project will spread out over three films with a television series linking everything together, the role is one that agents are clamoring over for their clients. But that said, don’t be surprised if those two names are strictly wishlist at this point, sitting at the top of a talent list that the studio and filmmakers eventually plan to reach out to. However, even if it is just a wishlist, it does perhaps indicate that Universal and co. are hoping to land a strong name to pull in the audience required to pull off what is certainly one of the most ambitious studio projects in a long time.

US Postal Service To Release Pixar Stamps On August 19, 2011

The United States Postal Service today announced its commemorative stamp program for 2011 and it includes some very familiar faces, fictional and not, including friends from several Disney/Pixar films.

The Send a Hello stamps are a natural outgrowth of the Art of Disney stamp series issued between 2004 and 2008. Originally intended as a series of three annual issuances depicting friendship, celebration, and romance, the Art of Disney stamps proved so popular that the Postal Service expanded the series to include issuances in 2007 and 2008 to celebrate imagination and magic. The Send a Hello series is meant to encourage people to connect with their loved ones via the United States Postal Service.

With an already established and well-received relationship, the Postal Service was eager to again work with the Walt Disney Company, this time choosing to explore the Disney/Pixar films, which offer exciting, contemporary characters and strong themes involving family and friends.

The pane of 20 stamps includes five different designs featuring Pixar characters: Lightning McQueen and Mater from Cars (2006); Remy and Linguini from Ratatouille (2007); Buzz Lightyear and two of the green, three-eyed aliens from Toy Story (1995); Carl Fredricksen and Dug from Up (2009); and WALL*E from WALL*E (2008).

The 2011 Disney/Pixar Send a Hello stamps will be released on August 19, 2011.

ZIIIRO Watches

First unveiled as a concept this past spring, ZIIIRO watches took a novel approach and completely removed numbers, hashes, hands from the clock face. The demand for the product was so high that the company decided to go into production and now you can buy one this week. (Price: 100-134 Euros).

The watch works as follows: The tip of the inner swirl shows the hour, and the tip of the outer swirl shows minutes. The pendant in the middle pops out of the silicon-and-steel strap so that you can use all six colored straps with the same core, making the watch into some kind of fluid, ever-changing timepiece and work of art.

The German manufacturer has also commissioned an iPhone app that offers to replicate the ZIIIRO clock face on your bedside table.
