Amazon Unveils Kindle Fire HD, $159 Kindle Fire

Amazon today announced new 7- and 8.9-inch Kindle Fire HD tablets, and a new $159 version of the Kindle Fire. The Kindle Fire HD starts at 16GB and comes equipped with either a 1280×800/7” or 1920×1200/8.9” screen, promising 25 percent less glare than the prior Kindle Fire, plus improved viewing angles and stereo speakers. Kindle Fire HD will feature dual-band Wi-Fi with MIMO, as well as a front-facing camera, helping it to compete more effectively against the third-generation iPad. The 7” 16GB version will sell for $199 starting on September 14, with the 8.9” 16GB version at $299 on November 20. Each will also come in a 32GB model.

Amazon also announced a $499, 32GB version of the 8.9” Kindle Fire HD with 4G LTE support as its signature feature. This model is paired with a “breakthrough” $50 per year LTE plan, offering 250MB of data per month for an entire year, for a price of $549 versus $959 for a 32GB iPad with LTE and one year of data service. AT&T is believed to be the LTE data provider, and additional details were not immediately available. Notably, Amazon has not disclosed battery life for the 8.9” Kindle Fire HDs, but claims 11 hours of run time for the 7” model.

As a successor to last year’s Kindle Fire, which Amazon claims holds 22% of the U.S. tablet market, the $159 Fire looks similar to its predecessor, but is being billed as 40 percent faster, with double the RAM and longer battery life. It also ships Sept. 14.

Amazon Unveils Kindle Paperwhite With Front-Lit Display

Today Amazon announced the Kindle Paperwhite, a new front-lit eReader with Amazon’s latest E Ink display. The new Kindle features a black and white touchscreen E Ink display with 25% better contrast than previous-generation Kindles and 212 pixels per inch. Overall, the unit is just 9.1 millimeters thick, which Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos noted is thinner than the average magazine.

Amazon says the battery will last about 8 weeks on a charge.

The new unit will start at $119 and it is available immediately for preorder for an October 1st launch. A 3G version of the new Kindle Paperwhite will cost $179, and the old Kindle without front lighting will remain available for $69.

MONDO Announces Next Gallery Show Featuring Artists Robert Brandenburg & Craig Drake

MONDO, the collectible art division of Alamo Drafthouse Cinema, announces its next gallery show, which runs from September 14 – October 6, featuring both prints and original works of art from Robert Brandenburg and Craig Drake. The gallery opening on September 14 will be from 7:00 – 10:00pm with regular hours to follow for the show’s duration. The Mondo Gallery is located at 4115 Guadalupe St. in Austin, TX.

MONDO fans may recognize Craig Drake’s style from an original Blade Runner painting of Rachael at the gallery’s sci-fi themed show at SXSW.  “I find Craig Drake’s sharp, sleek portraits very interesting. He created my favorite piece at our inaugural show, which I am proud to have hanging in my house,” said MONDO’s Mitch Putnam. Drake has delivered stunning works of art for MONDO’s upcoming show, bringing his sleek 80s pop style to characters from Metropolis, Black Swan, Kill Bill and more.

Artist Robert Brandenburg will be reinterpreting classic movie posters by adding embellishments to the original one-sheets for the Mondo show. “If you are in the area, you must come see Robert Brandenburg’s pieces in person. His attention to detail is unmatched,” commented Putnam. His subtle and sometimes not-so-subtle tweaks to iconic art are sublime, adding new meaning to familiar poster art from movies like Deliverance, Manhattan and more.
