It’s no secret that my favorite graphic novel of all-time is Frank Miller’s The Dark Knight Returns. This groundbreaking 4 issue prestige format mini-series from 1986 reinvigorated my love for comics and opened my eyes to the world of comic books written for an older generation. It lead me to read works by Alan Moore, Neil Gaiman, Grant Morrison, etc.
Over the years, I have collected Batman statues that pay homage to The Dark Knight Returns.
Yesterday at New York Comic Con, DC Collectibles blew my mind with their announcement of a forthcoming statue. Behold Batman: The Dark Knight Returns – Call to Arms Statue slated for 2013. Click on the picture to make it larger and marvel at the glorious detail. Batman filled with purpose on top of a dark galloping horse.
Why is the Dark Knight on a horse you ask? In the graphic novel Superman diverts a Russian nuclear warhead which then detonates in a desert, Gotham is hit by an electromagnetic pulse and descends into chaos during the resulting blackout. On horseback, Batman and Robin rally former Mutants and the Sons of the Batman to prevent looting and ensure the flow of needed supplies. Below is a panel depicting this scene. Enough of the history lesson, I need to make some more shelf space. 2013 can’t come soon enough!
