Alternative Movie Posters: Film Art from the Underground By Matthew Chojnacki

Over the years the motion picture industry has (sadly) gravitated to generating poorly cropped and heavily airbrushed posters that rely far too often on celebrity head shots. Thankfully, an underground network of graphic designers and artists has reinvigorated the art of the movie poster, crafting stunning pieces for classic and cult films.

Alternative Movie Posters: Film Art from the Underground by Matthew Chojnack is the first comprehensive look at the movement, presenting this eclectic and dynamic medium through more than 200 eye-popping posters from over 100 cutting-edge artists, coupled with fascinating commentary and behind-the-scenes information.

These new, underground posters have quickly become the most coveted by ardent moviegoers; they are typically produced in very limited runs, sell out within minutes, and command upwards of several hundred dollars each. With a smart, fresh visual perspective, alternative movie posters celebrate classics like Star Wars, A Clockwork Orange, and The Shining as well as cult favorites: The Big Lebowski, Blade Runner, and Pink Flamingos.

The 208 page hardcover features posters from Mondo, Spoke Art and much more. Alternative Movie Posters: Film Art from the Underground will be available on October 28, 2013.

Batman Black & White Statue Line Turns 50, Relaunches Comic, Hints At Fan-Driven Future

The Batman: Black and White statue line turns 50 today. No, not fifty years old, but fifty statues released! Sean Murphy’s well-balanced Batman makes #50, and the line shows no signs of stopping, with statues already planned through 2015.

As the line has continued over the last eight years, DC Collectibles has kept it surprisingly tight, releasing as few as four statues a year, despite its popularity. That’s by design, out of a desire to keep it special and not “flood the market.” Keeping the line special and listening to fan feedback is very important to DC Collectibles, in fact, who announced last week that the numbering system will be going back to the Black and White series, due strictly to popular request.

The Batman: Black and White statues came from the Batman: Black and White comic series – and now things have come full circle, with the comic series relaunching in September.

Newsarama talked with DC Collectible’s Kevin Kiniry (VP, Creative Services) and Jim Fletcher (Design Director, Creative Services) about the line’s continued evolution, how hard it is to do the figurative balancing act of releasing enough but not too many statues and even got some hints about what’s to come in the future of the line.

Read the interview HERE. For a full list of the statues that have been released so far, please click HERE.

Burger King To Serve Up French Fry Burger

Burger King says it will start offering a “French Fry Burger” for $1, as it looks to fend off McDonald’s aggressive push for its Dollar Menu.

The Miami-based chain says the burger will be available Sept. 1 through the fall, as it looks to drum up sales and customer interest with cheap new concoctions.

The burger, which clocks in at 360 calories and 19 grams of fat, is a standard beef patty topped with the chain’s french fries along with all the fixings.

Apple TV Adds Vevo, Disney, Weather Channel & Smithsonian Channels

Apple has added new channels to Apple TV today — Vevo, Disney Channel, Disney XD, The Weather Channel, and the Smithsonian Channel.

Disney XD is a separate channel from Disney Channel, aimed at preteens and teenagers; both Disney channels require signing in with a selected cable provider. Smithsonian Channel includes a collection of on-demand videos, and does not require an existing cable TV subscription. After requesting your city or zip code, The Weather Channel uses a new interface to show you today’s weather, full-screen hourly and 10-day forecasts, region-specific forecast videos, access to Weather Channel shows, topics of interest, and featured videos.

A system update isn’t needed to see the new channels.
