Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Vine, Pinterest – you could go on and on about all the different upstarts that have come to mainstream prominence over the last decade. Social media has literally changed our lives. The way we communicate, start relationships, advertise and consume media have all been modified thanks to our increasing usage of these mediums.
For all of the upshots social media has brought us, it wouldn’t be much fun if we didn’t get to see the occasional meltdown. Whilst seeing the polished output controlled by a press manager might give us an air of infallibility from those in the limelight, when they’re free to take the reins and run riot by themselves it can often lead to some of the more dramatic moments. Reminding us that they’re human helps their public persona more than personality-less tweet about tour dates, single releases, meet and greets or whatever else these celebrities are plugging.
Many pop stars, actors, politicians, sports stars and brands are impeccable with their output. Others, not so much. Some of the best social media fails can be found here but we have rounded up our favorites of all time.
Everybody Loves Beyoncé
Even your grandma has been known to shake it along to ‘All the Single Ladies’ from time to time. However, when someone held in such high regard for almost everything feels the need to start photoshopping her Instagram pictures, it leaves mere mortals feeling slightly inadequate. The fans were on to her, too!
Charlie Sheen, In General
The monumental breakdown of Charlie Sheen was enough in itself. You could write articles for days about that one, and how his “winning” was most definitely not winning. The more PG and easier to swallow fail from Charlie came in a much more innocent way, though, as in the burgeoning days of Twitter he managed to tweet out his phone number and was subjected to a barrage of calls as he was out eating dinner. It appears the tweet was supposed to be in private to Justin Bieber. Whether that is “winning” or not will of course be personal preference.
That Time Mary J. Blige’s Argument Fell At The First Hurdle
Insulting someone’s intelligence can be quite hurtful. Considering “intelligents” isn’t a thing, can somebody really be hurt by that? Mary has never been a woman subjected to much scrutiny for her wisdom. Her voice and music usually do the talking. But when she took umbrage with somebody not taking her seriously in the intellect stakes her fail couldn’t have been more perfect.
Once It’s Out There, It’s Out There
Once you’ve posted something on social media, you know there’s no turning back. You might delete it after a second but it can haunt you forever. It’s even worse when something takes hold in a way you didn’t want it to. Big names and brands have fallen foul to this.
Australian rapper Iggy Azalea might have been able to get away with nonsensical freestyles when she was playing to three people in a dive bar, but now everyone is connected and they won’t miss a trick. Not only will they not miss it, but they’ll attach a hashtag that sees it go viral in minutes, with everybody chiming in.
Social media is weird and wonderful and long may it stay that way. We could have added hundreds to this list, but feel free to share your favorite celeb fails with us. We could all do with a few more ways to make Facebook, Twitter and Instagram help us be less productive during our work day!
