Christopher Guest’s Mascots Coming To Netflix In 2016

Christopher Guest

Actor, writer and director Christopher Guest is exploring the wild world of direct-to-Netflix movies. Guest’s “Mascots” is set to appear on the streaming video service in 2016.

Netflix made the announcement by way of a flyer spread around on social media this week. Information is scant, but the flyer notes that “Mascots” will premiere “exclusively in 2016” as a Netflix original film.

The flyer reads, “Welcome to all the drama, intrigue and occasional excitement of the 8th World Mascot Association Championships,” where a group of ‘unusual’ men and women, with big heads and furry suits, compete to win the prestigious Gold Fluffy Award and be crowned best mascot in the world.”

Guest is know for pioneering the “mockumentary” format of faux-documentary films through “This is Spinal Tap” (rock ‘n’ roll), “Best in Show” (dog shows), “Waiting for Guffman” (community theater) and “A Mighty Wind” (folk music).

Guest often works with the same actors across multiple films, so there’s a good chance familiar faces in the form of Michael McKean (“This is Spinal Tap,” “Better Call Saul”), Harry Shearer (“This is Spinal Tap,” “The Simpsons”), Eugene Levy (“Best in Show,” “A Mighty Wind”) and Jane Lynch (“A Mighty Wind,” “Glee”) could show up in the cast. We’ll have to wait for the details to be revealed.
