Disneyland Offers Peek At Guardians of The Galaxy Attraction

Months before its announced summer 2017 opening, Disneyland has released new images of proposed Guardians of the Galaxy attraction, which will replace the Twilight Zone Tower of Terror at Disney California Adventure.

Announced in July at Comic-Con International, three months after plans for the makeover first leaked, Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: Breakout will transform the 1930s-style Hollywood Tower Hotel into The Collector’s fortress from Marvel Studios’ Guardians of the Galaxy, while keeping its elevator-drop ride elements.

“It really has a lot different design elements that all come together and create what’s really a very striking building,” John Mauro, executive director of Walt Disney Imagineering, said a new video. “It’s going to look like a brand-new attraction.”

The model shown in the new images was designed by Walt Disney Imagineering as a “warehouse, fortress-like power plant” that’s intended to be both intimidating and regal. The completed structure is where The Collector displays his newest acquisitions, the Guardians of the Galaxy, who are trapped inside customized display cases. Visitors, aka the Collector’s VIP guests, will board a gantry lift that launches them into a chaotic adventure with Rocket Raccoon to rescue his teammates.

According to Disney, the attraction will be outfitted with new visual and audio effects, as well as music from the film’s hit soundtrack. The company also promises “a variety of randomizes ride experiences,” meaning guests won’t know which adventure they’ll get.

The planned replacement of the 12-year-old Tower of Terror hasn’t been without controversy. Following the July announcement of the makeover, a petition was launched on Change.org to urge Disney to save the attraction, drawing more than 35,000 supporters. Although the Tower of Terror at Disney California Adventure will close on Jan. 3, versions of the ride will continue to operate at Disney’s Hollywood Studios in Orlando, Florida, Tokyo DisneySea, and Walt Disney Studios Park in Paris.

Licensing agreements with Universal Orlando predating Disney’s $4 billion purchase of Marvel in 2009 prevent the company’s characters from appearing at Disney World in Florida. Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: Breakout will provide Marvel with its first permanent anchor at Disneyland.

Directed and co-written by James Gunn, 2014’s Guardians of the Galaxy grossed more than $773 million worldwide. Its sequel arrives May 6, 2017.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 stars Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, Michael Rooker, Karen Gillan, Pom Klementieff, Elizabeth Debicki, Chris Sullivan and Kurt Russell.
