MAJOR SPOILERS AHEAD…
M. Night Shyamalan’s Split is now out in theaters, and fans are buzzing about the film’s big twist ending, which reveals that it’s a supervillain origin story set within the same universe as Shyamalan’s 2000 film, Unbreakable.
Speaking with Entertainment Weekly about the revelations of Split’s ending, M. Night Shyamalan confirmed that he has a “robust outline” for the Unbreakable 2 script, and that he’s committing to work on it soon. When asked specifically if the sequel is going to be made, Shyamalan answered, “I hope so. The answer is yes. I’m just such a wimp sometimes. I don’t know what’s going to happen when I go off in my room, a week after this film opens, to write the script. But I’m going to start writing.”
According to USA Today, Shyamalan has another original movie idea he’s “dying to do” yet figures his next film will be the trilogy finale. He’s “pretty excited” about the 10-page outline he’s got so far. “It’s very big, so that scares me a little.”
So it looks like Unbreakable 2 will be a go and potentially his next movie! THE FIRE WIRE will keep you updated on the status of the film’s production.
