How The Unicorn Craze Has Taken Hold In Australia

Despite being a creature that has never been spotted in Perth, Sydney or Melbourne, the unicorn has become a fixture in Australian pop culture. From t-shirts to bags and from phone covers to slippers, they are everywhere.

Yet, most people are unsure how this craze started in the first place. How did this legendary horned horse become such a big part of our lives and how completely has it taken over our pop culture?

Bright And Colorful Unicorn Food

Search online for “unicorn recipes” and prepare to be surprised at how many different ideas come back from sites like Buzzfeed and The Huffington Post. From frappes to hot chocolate and from cupcakes to ice cream, there is something for every taste.

The bright colors and fun look of this food mean that it is incredibly popular with children. These recipes also make it easy to put together a range of snacks and treats with a unicorn theme for a memorable birthday party.

Of course, there are plenty of other options in Australian cities for cheerful, colorful food that brightens up your day. For instance, Deliveroo.com.au has a list of alternative burgers that are designed to look appealing without a horn in sight. Yet, there is no sign of the unicorn food craze slowing down.

Millions of Instagram Images

Some people suggest that Instagram has been the biggest factor in the unicorn craze that is sweeping Australia and the rest of the world. Certainly, with eight million Instagram posts using the #unicorn tag, it is clear that these beasts are popular with users.

So, what do we find when we look through Instagram for unicorns? Well, we can see lipstick designs, nail designs, cocktails, backpacks, and a lot more. What is obvious is that people love putting unicorn images on social media.

These days, even accounts that aren’t directly about unicorns use them in their name. Unicorn Kids is a Sydney-based children’s modelling agency and Chasing Unicorns is the account for an Australian fashion store. What isn’t clear is whether the craze started on Instagram or carried over there from elsewhere.

Movies and TV Shows About Unicorns

Perhaps the truth is that the unicorn trend started with movies and television shows. Certainly, there is a popular opinion that the My Little Pony show started the ball rolling. My Little Pony: The Movie was premiered in Australia at the end of 2017 and had made a total gross of $977,018 by early in January.

Unikitty, Mia and Me, and Planet Unicorn are all TV shows that feature horses with horns. Kids can’t get enough of these animals and it seems likely that we will see more and more of these shows as the craze continues.

Of course, unicorns have been on our screens for a long time, so this isn’t just a recent phenomenon. The Last Unicorn movie from 1982 and Nico the Unicorn from 1998 are a couple of examples of movies from the end of the 20th century based on these mysterious creatures.

Maybe we will never know exactly why unicorns are now so popular in Australia and elsewhere. Perhaps this is just the perfect time for these magical animals to take the spotlight and we should enjoy it while it lasts.
