Watch The I’ll Be Gone In The Dark Trailer: New HBO Docuseries Takes On The Golden State Killer

HBO has released the official trailer for Oscar nominee Liz Garbus’ upcoming six-part documentary series titled I’ll Be Gone In the Dark, offering us our first preview at the late Michelle McNamara’s thorough investigation into searching for the identity of one of America’s most notorious serial killers dubbed as “The Golden State Killer.” Based on McNamara’s best-selling posthumously true crime book of the same name, the docuseries is scheduled to air on June 28.

I’ll Be Gone In The Dark explores writer Michelle McNamara’s investigation into the dark world of the violent predator she dubbed the Golden State Killer. McNamara lived a quiet life as a writer, mother and wife, preferring to stay on the periphery of the Hollywood world of her comedian husband Patton Oswalt. But every night, as her family slept, she indulged her obsession with unsolved cases, beginning her investigation into the man who terrorized California in the 1970s and 80s and is responsible for 50 home-invasion rapes and 12 murders.

The six-part docuseries is a comprehensive exploration of the case of an elusive, violent predator by McNamara, who suddenly died at the age of 46 due to an accidental overdose while investigating the unsolved crimes. It is also a haunting personal memoir and self-examination of McNamara’s obsessive quest for justice on behalf of the victims and survivors of the crimes. Framed by an introduction by Gillian Flynn and afterword by McNamara’s husband, comedian Patton Oswalt, the book was completed by McNamara’s lead researcher, Paul Haynes, and a close colleague, Billy Jenkins.

I’ll Be Gone In The Dark is directed by Oscar nominee Liz Garbus (Who Killed Garrett Phillips, Nothing Left Unsaid: Gloria Vanderbilt & Anderson Cooper). It will feature McNamara’s original recordings and excerpts from her book read by Amy Ryan. The docuseries will also feature new interviews with the detectives, survivors and family members of the killer.
