Was the past year a rough one for you? The ongoing pandemic alone would be enough to qualify an unpleasant year, but you made it through to the other side to face a new year. Maybe you put in a lot of hours at the office, or maybe you had to muster up the courage to undergo a surgery you desperately needed, like those performed at Northwest Surgery Center, or perhaps you even managed to get through the stress of putting together a wedding amongst all the omicron break-outs.
That’s a lot to accomplish in a dim year, so you should take the time to reward yourself for a year of success in a time when things are tough. And what better way to treat yourself than by seeing one of the most anticipated movies of the year?
2021 brought us plenty of disappointing delays, but that just means that this year will be packed with plenty of content to keep us entertained! We finally have plenty of shows, sports, video games, events, and movies that sure to crack grin across our faces. So grab your popcorn and get comfy, because we’ve got a lot to watch in 2022, and here are a few of the most anticipated ones to watch out for.
The Batman
It’s been a while since we’ve gotten a solo Batman film, what with Ben Affleck’s getting canned, so fans of the caped crusader are ready for more. Luckily, they won’t have long to wait, as Robert Pattinson will be dawning the cowl on March 4th. Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy was beloved by fans, as well as those that had never seen a Batman movie before—or maybe even many superhero films in general—as it showed us a realistic, gritty version of the character.
This time around, Batman is as dark and brooding as ever, with the trailer depicting a younger and much more brutal take on the character. It also appears as though we will finally be getting a detective-heavy Bats, which makes sense seeing as how he is known as ‘The World’s Greatest Detective.’ The antagonist of the film will not be The Joker, but The Riddler, although this rendition seems to be closer to Jigsaw from the horror franchise ‘Saw’ rather than the goofy Jim Carrey interpretation from the 90s.
The Batman is sure to shake up the tone and delivery that many recent superhero films have brought us, and while we love to laugh and watch aliens get beat up with a lot of CGI lasers, there’s something extremely enticing about the down-to-earth, gritty, noir setting that we seem to be getting.
Thor: Love and Thunder
After a lukewarm opening and a generally disliked sequel, The God of Thunder wasn’t doing too hot as far as his standalone films were concerned. Sure, we all loved his role in the Avengers movies, but the tone and direction of his films without the aid of Iron Man, Captain America, Black Widow, and every other superhero left something to be desired—aside from the Chris Hemsworth fans.
However, in the third film, Thor: Ragnarok, director Taika Waititi completely turned the character on his head. Thor was suddenly funny and entertaining, but still brought the hammer-swinging action that we all loved. This switch lit a fire under the film, making fans—and presumably Chris, too—excited for Thor’s future. In fact, it is the only Marvel film so far to be given a fourth standalone film, which is what we’ll be going to the theater for on July 8th. And by the looks of it, we’ll be getting some Guardians of the Galaxy with it, too!—or Asgardians, as Thor would say.
Avatar 2
James Cameron brought the world of Pandora to life back in 2009, and after more than a decade of waiting for the sequel, it’s finally slated to hit theaters in late 2022. The original film went down as the highest-grossing film of all time, garnering over 2.8 billion dollars at the box office, and the follow-up is sure to rack up some dough as well, but whether or not it can meet the success of the first is yet to be seen.
The series underwent such a long period between films due to Cameron’s innovative new underwater filmmaking techniques, which are said to be unlike anything else. It’s reported that the second and third films were shot back to back or simultaneously, so the third film should come much faster than the upcoming one.
Here’s hoping that the film lives up to the hype and that the thirteen-year-long break was worth it.
