The space suit used in 2001: A Space Odyssey is up for auction and the starting bid is $80,000!
This amazing piece of film memorabilia was worn by actor Sean Sullivan on set as Dr. Michaels, with “Sean Sullivan” handwritten on a tag sewn inside the suit.
These space suits can be seen prominently during the Moon crater and Moon Bus shuttle scenes. The award-winning Stanley Kubrick classic 2001: A Space Odyssey is still hailed as one of the greatest science fiction films of all time and inspired countless filmmakers to follow in his footsteps. Kubrick enlisted the help of NASA engineers to design a believable vision of the future of space travel, ultimately winning an Academy Award for best visual effects.
The suit exhibits age, paint cracking to the entirety of the coveralls and gloves, crazing to the left side of the helmet visor, paint chipping to the backpack, and heavy production use. Helmet was repainted post production (decal is original) and the “memory cards” at the back of the helmet were replicated and installed by Greg Jein. It comes with a certificate of authenticity from Heritage Auctions. (From the Collection of Greg Jein)
