Nike Launches Adventure Club Sneaker Subscription For Kids

The experience of shoe-shopping for young kids is deceptively complex. At first glance, it’s all about the child – but as many parents know, it can be just as much an experience for them. The reasons why are universal: Kids’ feet are continually growing, and many kids can’t articulate what they want, even after shoebox after shoebox comes out of the backroom. (The foot size issue isn’t helped by the fact that 60% of people, kids included, are walking around in the wrong-sized shoe at any given time.)

But now, a solution: Nike Adventure Club, Nike’s first footwear subscription service for children. Nike Adventure Club lets kids regularly select Nike and Converse shoes for the right-fitting shoe as their feet – and tastes – evolve.

Here’s how it works:

– Nike Adventure Club serves kids through sizes 4C to 7Y. (That’s roughly from age 2 to 10.)

– Choose from three tiers of subscription services, ranging from four pairs a year to 12 pairs a year. You’re free to upgrade, downgrade or pause your subscription at any time.

– Choose from more than 100 different sneaker styles, ranging across the spectrum of performance and sportswear.

– If you like the shoe, you can keep the pair. If you’re ready to replace it, send it back and Nike Adventure Club will either donate or recycle the returned sneaker.

In addition to shoes, the subscription service comes with exclusive adventure guides, filled with outdoor games and activities that parents can do with their kids. The guides are a collaborative partnership between Nike and KaBoom, a national nonprofit focused on encouraging kids to lead active, healthy lifestyles.

Prices range from $20 to $50 a month. Nike Adventure Club will fulfill its first subscriptions beginning August 12.

PBS Kids Announces New Series Xavier Riddle and The Secret Museum Based On Brad Meltzer’s Books

Today, PBS Kids announced the new animated series Xavier Riddle and The Secret Museum, based on the children’s book series Ordinary People Change the World by New York Times best-selling author Brad Meltzer and illustrator Christopher Eliopoulos. This new multiplatform series, produced by 9 Story Media Group’s award-winning animation studio Brown Bag Films, will debut nationwide in fall 2019 on PBS stations, the PBS Kids 24/7 channel and PBS Kids digital platforms. Xavier Riddle and The Secret Museum will introduce kids ages 4-7 to inspiring historical figures – from Rosa Parks to Leonardo da Vinci – who will help them learn important social-emotional concepts.

The series follows the adventures of Xavier Riddle, his sister Yadina and their friend Brad. In each episode, they face a problem and turn to the Secret Museum, a hidden room under an ordinary museum, to help them solve it. The museum allows Xavier, Yadina and Brad to travel back in time to meet real-life historical figures when they were kids. They witness pivotal moments that shaped each of these iconic people and learn social-emotional lessons – such as being resilient in the face of adversity and making and accomplishing goals. Each episode is designed to help viewers make the connection between the attributes that made each historical figure a hero, and those same attributes within themselves, while approaching history in an engaging, age-appropriate manner.

“For me, Xavier Riddle and The Secret Museum isn’t just a show – it’s my dream for my daughter and my sons,” said author Brad Meltzer. “My dream is for all of us to witness how the most ordinary person can become truly extraordinary through their actions. I want to show kids that there is potential in each of us. Every hero in the show was once a kid – smart, curious and full of adventure – just like them. They too can be heroes.”

Along with the television series, Xavier Riddle and The Secret Museum will offer digital content for kids, parents and teachers, debuting in fall 2019. Xavier Riddle and The Secret Museum games will be available at pbskids.org and on the free PBS Kids Games App, along with clips and full episodes streaming across PBS Kids’ video platforms, including the free PBS Kids Video App. A Xavier Riddle and The Secret Museum app will also launch after the series’ debut. Parent resources, including tips and hands-on activities to extend the learning at home, will be available on the PBS Kids for Parents site, and PBS LearningMedia will offer classroom-ready materials for teachers, including video excerpts, games, teaching tips and printable activities.

Each episode of Xavier Riddle and The Secret Museum will include two animated 11-minute stories with accompanying interstitial content. The series is currently in production of 37 half-hour episodes and a one-hour special.

Produced at Brown Bag Films’ Toronto studio, executive producers on the series are Vince Commisso, Brad Meltzer, Christopher Eliopoulos, Fonda Snyder and Rob Weisbach. The series is directed by Cory Bobiak (Peg + Cat), with Meghan Read (Dot,Dino Dan) in the role of executive story editor. The look of the show is based on Christopher Eliopoulos’ illustrations featured in the Ordinary People Change the World series.

9 Story Distribution International has worldwide distribution rights outside Canada while 9 Story Brands is managing global licensing and merchandising rights.

Super Heroic Sneakers

Super Heroic, is looking to change the way kids play and think about self empowerment with a brand new line of running sneakers.

Founded by Nike’s former global design director, Jason Mayden, these sneakers are designed from the ground up with youngsters in mind. Mayden was inspired to start this project when he had a hard time finding active shoes for his child that weren’t just pint-sized versions of adult running shoes.

Their shoe known as the Tumblr V1 Galactix features a unique design with a dual density midsole, rubber outsole, and sleek upper with a stretchy rubberized band for support. No more laces to come undone and trip over!

Check out this video of my daughter Elli unboxing her shoes:

The packaging is incredibly unique and fun. Each pair of shoes is stored in a shuttle-inspired tube that makes fun noises when twisted open. A backpack that morphs into a cape and colorful stickers are also included.

You can order Super Heroic shoes HERE for $80 in one of three colors; space purple, black, or blue.

I Am Neil Armstrong By Brad Meltzer

My 8 year old daughter, Elli adores the Ordinary People Change the World book series by Brad Meltzer. His upcoming book is about the beloved astronaut Neil Armstrong whose journey to the moon is the focus of the fifteenth picture book in the New York Times bestselling collection of biographies about heroes.

This friendly, fun biography series focuses on the traits that made our heroes great–the traits that kids can aspire to in order to live heroically themselves. Each book tells the story of one of America’s icons in a lively, conversational way that works well for the youngest nonfiction readers and that always includes the hero’s childhood influences. At the back are an excellent timeline and photos. This volume tells the story of Neil Armstrong, the first person to walk on the moon.

The 40 page hardcover book will be released on September 11, 2018 and you can order it HERE. Age range 5-8 years.

Land of Nod Jetaire Camper Play Tent & The S’more The Merrier Campfire Set

1

One of the exciting perks of writing a blog is finding packages at the front door with unique items to test, try out and often times keep. It’s like Christmas for me every day.

This week two boxes arrived that were filled with one of my favorite items to review in the last 6 years.

photo 1

Land of Nod was kind enough to send me their Jetaire Camper Play Tent and the S’more The Merrier Campfire Set. The official tester was my wife Patricia who set up the set in 5 minutes and my 5 year old daughter Eliana who was elated to arrive home from school and see a beautiful realistic fabric camper occupying our Family Room.

photo 2

The camper is made of cotton canvas, measures 79″ W x 38.5″D x 46″H and features embroidered and patchwork details such as an awning and curtains that look just like the real thing. The Jetaire Camper Play Tent ($249) features seven windows, an embroidered license plate, logo and patchwork tires.

To enhance your child’s camping playtime Land of Nod also offers the 20 piece S’more The Merrier Campfire Set ($69) which includes 4 plush logs, 14 plush stones, a plush hot dog, a plush marshmallow, 2 roasting sticks and 2 plush fire flames.

My crafty wife purchased a battery operated lighting set at Home Depot for $14 and added it to the ceiling of the camper for nighttime play. Now my daughter only wants to read books and play in her camper. I cannot recommend these items highly enough for their ease of setting up, sturdy construction, fun features and the endless hours of fun and make believe you will share with your children!
