Mondo To Release Apocalypse Now Print On April 29

Mondo has released a handful of screenprinted poster reproductions over the years, but Bob Peak’ Apocalypse Now might be their favorite.

After receiving high-quality files from American Zoetrope, Mondo brought in Jason Edmiston to handle color separations, alongside Mondo’s own Jon Smith. Shane Mahn beautifully reproduced the billing block, and Bob’s son Matthew Peak helped as an extra set of eyes to ensure the final poster felt true to his father’s original art.

And what they got back from DL Screenprinting is nothing short of remarkable.

From Jason Edmiston:

“I’ve been a fan of Bob Peak’s artwork for a long time. When I was in grade school, I’d hang out in the library and study books about movie poster art. Bob’s pieces were instantly recognizable, and stood head and shoulders above many of his contemporary’s works. His work elevated the medium to high art in my opinion. He eschewed photo-realism, by accentuating features, and exaggerating forms to enhance scenes and characters, making them appear how they felt in our minds, rather than how they appeared in reality. His abstraction and artistic flourishes added drama and excitement not often achieved in painted one sheets.

“My goal when helping separate this poster for screenprinting was to retain as much of the original artist’s hand and richness of colors from the original piece as possible. I took great care to approach it like a watercolor painting, building depth with layers of transparent inks, while also paying attention to the textures, airbrushed glows, and subtle linework that Bob often employed, making this one of the most iconic movie posters of all time. Jon Smith, Mondo’s resident separation guru, with a superior understanding of the printing process, then gave it a final pass, improving the depth with an extra layer of transparent grey.

“I have seen these posters in the flesh (printed by the great DL Screenprinting), and they might be the cleanest, most accurate representation of a digital file that I’ve had the pleasure to work on in my history with Mondo.”

Mondo To Release The Amazing Spider-Man: To Crush A Spider Screenprinted Poster By Ciro Nieli On March 25

Tomorrow Mondo will release an amazing new poster for a Spider-Man story that never was, by the spectacular Ciro Nieli.

Way back in 2006, before his work on two of the best animated series of all time, The Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes (2010) and TMNT (2012), Ciro was developing a pitch for an animated Spider-Man series. Last year, he shared some of his early sketchbook explorations for the design of Spidey and the Green Goblin, and Mondo was blown away. It took all of 3 seconds after seeing his post for Mondo to write him and ask if he ever had interest in doing a full screenprinted poster for ‘ol webhead.

From the start, Ciro had an awesome idea. People are obsessed with Marvel’s classic black light posters from the 70s, so Mondo used fluorescent inks to really make the colors sing.

“As a kid, I didn’t realize his impact on me, how that abstract Spidey mask would become the face I associated with so many ideas: pain, fear, responsibility, and triumph. I wanted this poster to capture how tortured the world of teen Peter Parker was and how this little spider could overcome any obstacle, no matter how big or terrifying.”

Mondo To Release Son of Godzilla Print By Attack Peter On January 29

Linocut mastermind Attack Peter continues his tireless exploration of the original Godzilla canon with 1967’s Son of Godzilla.

“I’ve had a strange relationship with this film. I’m fairly certain that Son of Godzilla was one of the handful of Godzilla films I watched on loop as a kid, the others being King Kong vs Godzilla, Ebirah: Horror of the Deep, and Godzilla Raids Again. I remember loving the tropical island and jungle vibe so much! Back then, I thought Minya was a lovable dork and I didn’t have any issues with him being in the mix. As I got older, I started to cringe whenever I saw him pop up in films, and his voice began to irritate me as well. I think it was a combination of me being in my “too cool for Minya” phase and also thinking that his presence would keep new fans from getting into Big G’s filmography.

Recently though, I began to rewatch all of the Showa, Heisei, Millenium and Legendary films again. It suddenly occurred to me that the hatred had gone too far on Minya. He’s an important part of Godzilla’s story and allows us to see a side of him that we don’t get to see elsewhere: He’s a hero and a father. In addition to that, I realized how many fans would constantly trash the ‘67 Godzilla suit! I don’t know if it’s the contrarian in me or my deep love of the X-Plus 30cm 1967 Godzilla figure — which I feel is one of the best Godzilla toys ever made — but I love that suit.

When the time came to pick my next design for the fine folks at Mondo, and seeing how many great artists interpreted so many popular Godzilla films, I knew it may fall on me to give Son of Godzilla the love it deserves! I spent my time trying to stay loyal to the odd and uncomfortable designs of the suits while giving them a touch of stylization, emphasize the lush jungle environment, and pay tribute to the nasty kaiju insects that inhabit it! I really hope you all love it!”

Alamo Drafthouse Auctioning Off Rare Mondo Prints

Alamo Drafthouse Cinema is inviting guests to bid on the largest and most comprehensive auction of Mondo prints ever. Drawn entirely from Alamo Drafthouse founder Tim League’s personal collection of nearly 2,000 Mondo limited edition prints, the auction begins Sunday, November 29th in partnership with eMoviePoster.com. Bidding for each item begins at just $1.

“I love Mondo posters. I own quite a few of them and the interpretations of my films by the Mondo crew are a source of great pride to me,” says Shaun of the Dead director Edgar Wright. “It is clear they are in the middle of a very cool Venn diagram composed of huge artistic talent and a genuine love of movies.”

The auction will begin at 5:00PM on November 29th and close on December 13th. Bidders must have a free account at eMovieposter.com to bid. Everything in the auction is certified original and in mint or near mint condition. Each poster will be meticulously inspected and graded prior to the auction by the eMovieposter team.

From Tim League: “Cinemas across the country are facing extraordinary financial hardships. We are legally unable to open many of our venues, and where we can open, our capacity is significantly reduced, the product – the supply of blockbuster films – has evaporated, and our debt from accrued rent during closure continues to mount.

100% of proceeds from the sale will go towards paying staff of the Alamo Drafthouse and paying debt and expenses accrued during the COVID closures. These next four to six months are critical and the proceeds from this auction will help immensely.

If you are a Mondo collector, if you have a movie fan in your life who would like something unique under the Christmas tree this year, or if you have never purchased a poster before, we invite everyone to explore the incredible history of nearly 15 years of beautiful poster design in this auction.

Alamo Drafthouse’s history of creating special hand-silkscreened event posters dates back to early partnerships with then gig poster luminary and Mondo co-founder Rob Jones on posters for QT Fest and early outdoor Rolling Roadshow events like Cinemapocalypse. Later, Mondo Tees – the tiny iron-on T-shirt shop in the original Alamo Drafthouse’s ticket booth – began creating and releasing collectible prints that became highly sought-after, and revolutionized the film poster world.

Mondo’s reputation for graphic excellence continues with inventive, artist-driven designs for everything from the latest studio blockbusters to cult classics. That commitment to has led the company to work with a roster of world-renowned artists that include Aaron Horkey, Becky Cloonan, Francesco Francavilla, Frank Kozik, Jermaine Rogers, Jason Edmiston, Jay Ryan, Jay Shaw, Jock, Tula Lotay, Laurent Durieux, Matt Taylor, Olly Moss, Stan Sakai, Shepard Fairey, Drew Struzan, Vania Zouravliov, and many more.

Mondo To Release Scott Pilgrim vs. The World Print On September 10

It’s been ten years since writer/director Edgar Wright KO’ed us with his live-action adaptation of Scott Pilgrim vs. The World.

Truly though, what Edgar was able to do with Bryan Lee O’Malley’s series of graphic novels is nothing short of a pop culture tour de force. From its completely stacked cast, Edgar’s and Michael Bacall’s brilliant script, Bill Pope’s kinetic cinematography… it all comes together in a film that can now be considered a timeless genre classic.

Matty’s poster celebrates both the girl of Scott’s dreams, Ramona Flowers in her infinite radness, as well another pretty iconic staple of pop culture with the initials “S.P.” This poster is available in three color variants, just like Ramona’s ever-changing hair.
