The 7 Coolest MacGuffins In Film

ComingSoon.net has searched through all of the complexities of film and found some of the most poignant, hilarious and irrelevant MacGuffins the silver screen has to offer.

Sometimes writers just need to move the story along or motivate characters without the narrative becoming a convoluted mess. This is where Macguffins come in, an object, character, device—anything that moves the plot forward but doesn’t necessarily mean anything (although sometimes they do mean something). Some of the greatest films feature tropes, themes and things like MacGuffins are beautiful and iconic; they stick out in our minds as a cornerstone of cinema.

Ironically, people debate online, in person, everywhere trying to pinpoint the actual nature of the more meaningless MacGuffins; truth is, sometimes they don’t really mean anything—even when we think they do, they really just exist to move the plot forward. The most powerful things in life, especially in film, simply exist just for the sake of existence. HERE is a collection of some well-known MacGuffins that have elevated their respective films to iconic status.

Some notable omissions include Green Destiny from Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, the Maltese Falcon, the Necronomicon from the Evil Dead franchise, The big “W” from It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad World and the Death Star Plans from Star Wars.

What is your favorite film MacGuffin?

Rampage (2009)

Rampage is a 2009 film centered around a disturbed young man who believes that the world is suffering from overpopulation and handles it himself by buying automatic weapons and armor. The film follows the young man through a series of graphic and violent scenes where he reduces the population himself.

In one scene, he ends up in a Bingo hall where he sits near the back of the building until eventually making his way to the front where he grabs the Bingo ball out of the Bingo caller’s hand. Rather than being upset about the gunman himself, the Bingo players are more concerned about the game being stopped and their bingo cards remaining blank. It’s a great scene to depict how serious Bingo players take the game!

8 Mile (2002)

8 Mile is a 2002 film that follows the life of a young man looking to make it big in the rap game. He lives with his mother and sister in a trailer park and is exposed to all of the elements of a not-so-great mother. His mom seems to care more about her boyfriend and her Bingo nights than she does her two kids.

However, she does come home one night with a $3,200 win from Bingo!

The Gambler (2014)

This 2014 is a remake of the 1974 classic, The Gambler. This film follows the hectic life of a full-time gambling addict part-time teacher. He becomes so buried in his gambling debt owed to loan sharks and an underground casino ring that he’s given just one week to pay off his debts or risk his life.

To help gather the money, he turns to a few of his students for help.

The Cincinnati Kid (1965)

The Cincinnati Kid is a 1965 film based around The Great Depression. This film follows the journey of one man who is determined to prove that he is the best poker player that the world has ever seen. However, this title isn’t given to him that easily.

He first must beat the best in the poker game, a veteran poker player named Lancey “The Man” Howard. It’s a great gambling classic.

21 (2008)

21 is a 2018 film based on the lives of several MIT college students who are mentored by one of their professors on how to count cards. They learn to count cards and use this trick to clear out casino after casino, using the won money to pay off student loan debt. However, their easy money doesn’t last long when one casino begins to pick up on their tricks!

A new IT: Chapter Two featurette has been released featuring director Andy Muschietti promising to “crank up the horror” as novel writer Stephen King and the cast discuss how the sequel puts the characters front and center, making it a sort of “coming-of-age” tale.

The cast of IT: Chapter Two includes James McAvoy (X-Men franchise, Split) as Bill, Jessica Chastain (Crimson Peak, The Martian) as Beverly, Bill Hader (Barry, Trainwreck) as Richie, Jay Ryan (Beauty and the Beast) as Ben and James Ransone (Generation Kill) as Eddie, with Andy Bean (Here and Now) as Stanely Uris, Isaiah Mustafa as Mike, Teach Grant (Altered Carbon, Damnation) as Henry Bowers, Jess Weixler (The Son, Chained for Life) as Bill’s wife, Xavier Dolan (Boy Erased) as Adrian Mellon, Will Beinbrink (Queen of the South) as Tom Rogan and, of course, the return of Bill Skarsgård as the clown Pennywise.

The second part is written by Gary Dauberman from the book by Stephen King. Muschietti, once again, is at the helm. The movie will arrive in theaters on September 5.

IT debuted in September of last year to the tune of $123.1 million on opening weekend, the highest opening weekend ever for a September release, for a fall release, and for a horror movie. The film earned over $700 million at the worldwide box office, making it the highest-grossing horror movie of all time.
