New Stamps Celebrate 50th Anniversary of First Moon Landing

In celebration of the 50th anniversary of the first moon landing on July 20, 1969, the U.S. Postal Service is pleased to reveal two stamp designs commemorating that historic milestone.

One stamp features a photograph of Apollo 11 astronaut Buzz Aldrin in his spacesuit on the surface of the moon. The image was taken by astronaut Neil Armstrong. The other stamp, a photograph of the moon taken in 2010 by Gregory H. Revera of Huntsville, AL, shows the landing site of the lunar module in the Sea of Tranquility. The site is indicated on the stamp by a dot. The selvage includes an image of the lunar module. Both stamps include the inscription “1969 First Moon Landing.” An image of the lunar module will be included on the selvage, or border, of the pair.

Art director Antonio Alcalá designed the stamp art. The release date and the details for the Forever-denomination stamps’ First Day of Issue ceremony are still to be announced.

The U.S. Postal Service Honors John Lennon With New Stamp

The U.S. Postal Service honored singer and songwriter John Lennon today as the latest addition to its Music Icons stamp series at a first-day-of-issue ceremony in New York City’s Central Park.

Lennon, a rock and pop music icon, is world renowned as a founding member of the Beatles and a successful solo artist. The Beatles still hold records for a string of hits released from 1962-1970, including “All You Need is Love,” which served as an anthem for Lennon’s humanitarian endeavors. Lennon’s last studio album was released in 1980. Lennon was posthumously inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1987 and twice inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame: as a member of the Beatles in 1988 and as a solo artist in 1994.

The Music Icons: John Lennon Commemorative Forever stamp features a photo of Lennon taken by noted rock ’n’ roll photographer Bob Gruen in August 1974. Taken on the rooftop of Lennon’s Manhattan apartment, the photograph is part of a series of images taken by Gruen during the photo session for Lennon’s 1974 album Walls and Bridges. The original black-and-white image was treated in gradations of color to create the artwork for this stamp, which is available for purchase starting today.

Customers may purchase John Lennon Forever stamps through the Postal Store at usps.com/shop.

U.S. Postal Service To Dedicate Mister Rogers Forever Stamp

On February 2, 2018, Postmaster General Megan J. Brennan of the United States Post Office announced that they would be dedicating a forever postage stamp to Fred Rogers of Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood, the late, great children’s television pioneer who introduced generations of children (and adults) to new ways of doing things, to believing in oneself and to look for the helpers when in need. A dedication ceremony will be taking place at the WQED’s Fred Rogers Studio in Pittsburgh March 23, 2018. There will also be a live Facebook video stream of the event.

Fred Rogers (1928–2003) was known as a beloved television neighbor to generations of children. His groundbreaking public television series “Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood”inspired and educated young viewers with warmth, sensitivity and honesty. Filmed in Pittsburgh and first distributed nationally in 1968 by a predecessor of the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS), the program was innovative and unlike anything on television for children at that time.
