Richard Chizmar Discusses Working With Stephen King

When it was released in 2017, Gwendy’s Button Box was an oddity for Stephen King fans. The fantasy book was short, for one thing, just larger than the size of a novella. And it featured a co-author who is not one of King’s writer sons: Richard Chizmar, owner of Cemetery Dance Publications.

Most notably, it was a story that King didn’t actually finish; he showed the incomplete story to Chizmar, who was able to complete the novel.

If Chizmar was intimidated by working with one of the world’s best known and best selling authors, it didn’t stop him from doing it again. Chizmar is back with King, who took an editor’s role, for a sequel, Gwendy’s Magic Feather (out in paperback from Gallery Books, Jan. 21), and there are plans for an as-yet-unwritten third book to complete the series.

The first book was about Gwendy Peterson, a young girl in 1974 who is given a mysterious box, by a mysterious man in black, which could cause global cataclysms. The sequel, which also takes place mostly in King’s fictional town of Castle Rock, Maine, follows Gwendy to 1999, when she’s become an author, filmmaker, and, most surprisingly, a junior member of the U.S. Congress.

Chizmar talked to Kirkus about the collaboration HERE.

Taika Waititi To Direct Thor 4

Taika Waititi is returning to the Marvel Studios fold to direct Thor 4, the followup to his wildly successful 2017 sequel Thor: Ragnarok! However, due to conflicting dates with the superhero film, Waititi’s plans to direct Warner Bros. live-action adaptation of Akira have been pushed back until after Thor 4 is complete.

Thor: Ragnarok was a hit with critics and fans alike, taking the franchise in a more overtly comedic direction to the tune of over $854 million worldwide.

As for the director’s adaptation of Katsuhiro Otomo’s classic manga and anime film Akira, a May 21, 2021 release date has now been pushed back indefinitely. Waititi was in the process of testing actors from around the world to star in the picture, which he previously hoped to cast with Asian teenage leads. Unfortunately script issues forced the project into rewrites to address certain concerns, and with some of them yet to be addressed the filmmaker is moving ahead to Thor 4. Warners still hopes to retain him to start work on the long-gestating Akira after the Marvel sequel is complete.

Waititi’s busy schedule also includes plans to write/direct a Time Bandits TV pilot for Apple TV+, as well as the episode of Star Wars series The Mandalorian he completed for Disney Plus. Waititi also has the WWII dramedy Jojo Rabbit (in which he also plays the role of Adolf Hitler) finished for release by Fox Searchlight on October 18, 2019. He is also helping Fox develop an animated version of the comic strip Flash Gordon.

The 2020 celebration will take place at the Anaheim Convention Center. Star Wars Celebration Anaheim 2020 will be four fun-filled days of major announcements, immersive exhibits, an interactive show floor, screenings, exclusive merchandise, celebrity guests, panels, autograph sessions, fan-inspired activities, costumes, and other surprises. From young fans of Star Wars animated shows to die-hards fueled by the nostalgia for the original Star Wars trilogy to families that enjoy Star Wars together, there’s something for everyone at Star Wars Celebration. For Star Wars fans, there’s nothing else like it.

Following the release of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker this December, no more Star Wars movies are officially on the release schedule for Walt Disney Studios and Lucasfilm; however, a number of films are in development including a new series of films from David Benioff and Dan Weiss and another series from Star Wars: The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson. Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy has said they’re in the process of planning the next ten years of the franchise, so it’s certainly possible that a new batch of movies set in a galaxy far, far away could be revealed at next year’s convention.

Star Wars Celebration is an exciting convention filled with entertainment, celebrity appearances, stage shows, panels, interactive events, exclusive merchandise, screenings, and once-in-a-lifetime glimpses into the future of the epic saga. The event celebrated its 20th anniversary this year, taking place at McCormick Place in Chicago. The event is produced by Lucasfilm in collaboration with ReedPOP.

Todd McFarlane’s Spawn Set to Make History in 2019 With Epic 300th Issue

Todd McFarlane’s Spawn character sets the stage for a historic celebration as it breaks the record for the longest-running creator-owned comic in the world! To mark this momentous occasion, McFarlane has gathered a team of superstars from the comic industry to contribute to this giant sized 72-page book.

The big news for Spawn #300 is that award-winning artist, Greg Capullo (Batman), returns to illustrate Spawn. Capullo first brought his talents to Image Comic’s longest running title, with issue #16, leading to a visually-stunning run as the book’s featured artist, culminating in the hallmark 100th issue.

Following his seminal work on DC Comics’ iconic Batman, Capullo will be the main featured interior artist on Spawn #300, alongside another major revelation…for the first time since 1995, Todd McFarlane, one of the top-selling artists in comic book history, will return to pencil and ink interior artwork of the character he created during his high school days!

“I created Spawn back when I was a teenager hoping to someday break into the comic book industry,” said Todd McFarlane, Spawn creator, and Image President.  “Now, over 40 years later, not only was I able to have a career drawing and writing comics, but Spawn has been by my side for most of that journey. Even more exciting, Spawn is becoming the longest running creator-owned comic in the world!

“The group of creative folks helping out on this historic Spawn 300th issue is something that I hope thrills the ‘inner 15-year-old” in all of us. Plus, to have Greg Capullo come back to this title after so many long years, is what has me most excited as I personally consider him to be the top talent drawing in our industry today” said McFarlane.

The superstar creative team doesn’t end with Capullo and McFarlane. Current Spawn artist, Jason Shawn Alexander, fan-favorite J. Scott Campbell (Danger Girl, Spider-Man), rising star Jerome Opeña (Uncanny X-Force, Seven to Eternity) and best-selling writer Scott Snyder (Batman, Metal, Wytches), all bring their talents aboard to help usher in Spawn’s next grand evolution.

“The birth of Image Comics in 1992 was an exciting time, but there are few moments I remember more vividly than getting my hands on the first issue of Spawn,” said Eric Stephenson, Publisher and Chief Creative Officer at Image Comics. “Todd was already a comics superstar at that point – but Spawn vibrated with an energy all its own and I think everybody knew it was destined not only to be a hit but to stand the test of time. The fact that we’re approaching issue 300 nearly 30 years later is a testament to its impact not just on Image, but the industry as a whole. Go, Todd!”

Spawn #300,  a 72-page full-color comic book, celebrating 27 years, and counting, of the hit independent series with an all-star lineup of comics creators, will be in stores August 29, 2019. The title will feature 12 covers by McFarlane, Capullo, Campbell, Opeña, and Alexander, including gorgeous black and white “Artist Edition” variants showcasing the original, inked artwork of both Capullo and McFarlane. This historic, oversized issue will retail for $7.99.
