Amanda Gorman And Michelle Obama Discuss Art, Identity, And Optimism

Amanda Gorman captivated the world when she read her poem “The Hill We Climb” at President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris’ Jan. 20 Inauguration ceremony.

Sitting just feet away from the 22-year-old that day was former First Lady Michelle Obama, who had met Gorman twice before—in 2016 at a White House event for the National Student Poets program and again at a 2018 event for Black Girls Rock, an organization that seeks to empower women and girls. Gorman, who was named the first National Youth Poet Laureate in 2017, emerged in an instant as the latest inspiring young artist of the renaissance. Her three upcoming books shot to the top of Amazon’s bestseller list and the NFL soon announced plans for her to recite an original poem at Super Bowl LV.

In a remote interview, Gorman and Obama covered topics ranging from the role of art in activism to the pressures Black women face in the spotlight.

Penguin Young Readers To Release Special Edition of “The Hill We Climb,” Read by Amanda Gorman At The Presidential Inauguration

Due to overwhelming demand, Penguin Young Readers will publish a special hardcover edition of “The Hill We Climb,” the poem written and delivered by Amanda Gorman at the inauguration of the 46th president of the United States, Joe Biden. At age 22, Ms. Gorman is the sixth and youngest poet to deliver a poetry reading at a presidential inauguration, joining a select group that includes Maya Angelou, Robert Frost and Elizabeth Alexander. The special edition will be released this spring, with a first printing of 150,000.

“The Hill We Climb” will also be included in a poetry collection of the same name, to be released by Viking Books for Young Readers on September 21, 2021 alongside Ms. Gorman’s debut picture book, Change Sings, which has risen to #1 on Amazon amidst a flurry of pre-orders following her inauguration appearance.

Ms. Gorman’s inaugural poetry reading made her the person of the moment across all media, including The New York Times, CBS This Morning, CNN, and social media platforms.

Perhaps the most poignant of all was a tweet by former President Barack Obama:

“On a day for the history books, @TheAmandaGorman delivered a poem that more than met the moment. Young people like her are proof that ‘there is always light, if only we’re brave enough to see it; if only we’re brave enough to be it.’”
