Stephen King’s Horror Stories Are Fit For The Screen

No author alive has created more movie magic than Maine’s own Stephen King. In fact, you have to turn to the dearly departed – as King’s stories often do – to find a writer whose work has spawned more film and TV projects than King.

When the latest silver screen version of King’s “Pet Sematary” opens in theaters nationwide Friday, it will be at least the 44th film his writing has inspired, along with at least 35 TV projects. Scouring the Internet Movie Database, author websites and other online resources, it’s hard to find another author alive who has even a quarter of that kind of output.

Fans, scholars and filmmakers say King’s work is such attractive movie fodder because the stories are compelling and visual, and because any King project can attract publicity and millions of his fans. And his movie catalog just keeps on growing. At least two more films based on his work, “It: Chapter 2” and “Doctor Sleep,” are set to hit theaters this year.  Some two dozen other movie or TV projects are reportedly in the works as well.

Pet Sematary Exhumed: Stephen King Looks Back At His Most Disturbing Story

Stephen King calls one morning to set up an interview — and he’s singing.

“I hear you want to talk about… ‘I don’t wanna be burrrried / in a PET Sem-a-taar-yyy!’” the best-selling author croons over long distance.

The Ramones based that pop-goth song on his 1983 novel, it was featured in the creeptastic cult-favorite 1989 movie, and now — as most things associated with this tale — it gets to live its life again as part of the haunting new version of Pet Sematary hitting theaters April 5.

It stars Jason Clarke and Amy Seimetz as parents who move their family to the edge of the Maine woods, where there is a hidden place that resurrects the dead. Lithgow costars as a kindly neighbor, who reveals secrets best left buried, and Jeté Laurence plays their curious daughter, Ellie, who has too much curiosity for her own good.

King has a complex relationship with Pet Sematary. Over the decades, the 71-year-old storyteller has done a lot of monstrous things to a lot of people in his novels, but the rumor persists that he thinks Pet Sematary crossed a line, that it’s too morbid and troubling, and he only published it to escape a book contract.

It turns out all that is real.

So is a lot of what happened in the book. That’s why it bothers him.

Watch The Official NOS4A2 Trailer For AMC And Joe Hill’s Horror Series

AMC has released the official full-length NOS4A2 trailer for their upcoming supernatural series.

The series stars Zachary Quinto as the main antagonist Charlie Manx, Ashleigh Cummings as Vic McQueen, Olafur Darri Olafsson as Bing Patridge, Ebon Moss-Bachrach as Chris McQueen, and Virginia Kull as Linda McQueen.

NOS4A2, based on Joe Hill’s bestselling novel of the same name, tells the story of Charlie Manx, a seductive immortal who feeds off the souls of children, then deposits what remains of them into Christmasland – an icy, twisted Christmas village of Manx’s imagination where every day is Christmas Day and unhappiness is against the law. Manx finds his whole world threatened when a young woman in New England discovers she has a dangerous gift.

The Goldfinch‘s Ashleigh Cummings will play Vic McQueen, a young, working-class artist whose creativity awakens a supernatural ability to track Manx (Quinto). What Vic lacks in social confidence, she makes up for in courage, humor, and tough-as-nails grit. She strives to defeat Manx and rescue his victims without losing her mind or falling victim to him herself.

NOS4A2 is produced by AMC Studios in association with Tornante Television. The series is executive produced by Joe Hill, Jami O’Brien (Fear The Walking Dead, Hell On Wheels), who created the show for television and will serve as showrunner, and Lauren Corrao, Co-President of Tornante Television. The cast also includes the previously announced Olafur Darri Olafsson (Lady Dynamite) as Bing Partridge, Virginia Kull (The Looming Tower) as Linda McQueen, Ebon Moss-Bachrach (The Punisher) as Chris McQueen and Jahkara Smith (aka Sailor J) as Maggie Leigh.

The first season is slated to premiere Sunday, June 2 at 9pm/8c.

Taschen To Publish The Stan Lee Story XXL Edition

First published as a signed Collector’s Edition and sold out within a week, this is an unparalleled account of the life and times of Stan Lee, written and edited with the Godfather of comics himself. His tale is told by Roy Thomas, who brings “you are there” insights to Lee’s journey alongside never-before-seen photographs, original comic art, and rare comicbook facsimiles—a tribute worthy of the Man.

Now available as an unlimited XXL edition, this is the big one, True Believers! The mostly true tale of Stan Lee: a Giant-Size extravaganza, nearly ten years in the making, about the one and only Godfather of Comics. From his childhood in Depression-era New York, to transforming Marvel into the number one comics publisher in the world, to his 21st-century reinvention as Chief Creative Officer of global entertainment company POW! Entertainment, Stan “the Man” Lee stands the test of time as the most legendary name in comicbook history.

Stanley Lieber began working at Timely Comics in 1940 at the age of 17 and found himself at the helm of the bullpen as its top editor just two years later. But it wasn’t until 1961 that he ignited a revolution known as the “Marvel Age of Comics.” With a legendary stable of art partners including Jack Kirby, Steve Ditko, John Romita, and Jim Steranko, Lee unleashed a dizzying cascade of seminal comicbook creations—the Fantastic Four, Hulk, Spider-Man, Thor, Iron Man, the X-Men, and the Avengers to name a few. After moving to Hollywood in 1980, he did it again, developing TV and film projects that laid the groundwork for the “Marvel movie.” Stan’s constant cameo presence in these billion-dollar worldwide events is a testament to his influence. As the man behind POW! Entertainment, he became a master of all media—working with rock stars and professional sports leagues, movie mavens and reality TV shows—reinforcing his creative stature the world over.

The book was written and edited with Lee’s full cooperation. His tale is told by his successor at Marvel, renowned comics writer, editor, and historian Roy Thomas, who brings “you are there” insights and wide-eyed clarity to key moments of Lee’s journey to pop culture immortality. Featuring hundreds of treasures of comic book art, intimate photographs sourced straight from his family archives, a foreword written by Lee himself, a novel-length essay and new epilogue by Thomas, and an appendix with complete reprints of Stan’s comics from throughout the decades, this is a titanic tribute worthy of the Man.

The Stan Lee Story XXL Edition measures a whopping 11.5 x 17.2 in. and includes 624 pages. The book will be published in the summer of 2019 and you can pre-order it HERE for $200.

Home Entertainment will release Nancy Drew And The Hidden Staircase on Digital starting March 26, 2019 and Blu-ray Combo Pack & DVD on April 2, 2019.

Executive Produced by Ellen DeGeneres, the film stars Sophia Lillis (IT and “Sharp Objects”), Sam Trammell (“True Blood” and “This is Us”), and Linda Lavin (“The Good Wife” and “Alice”) and follows Nancy Drew in her new town, making new friends and on a mission to solve the case!  The film carries a suggested retail price of $19.99 for the Digital, $19.98 for the DVD and $28.98 for the Blu-ray Combo Pack.

Me By Elton John

Today, on Elton John’s 72nd birthday, we are delighted to share the title and cover of his first and only official autobiography.

Me is the joyously funny, honest and moving story of the most enduringly successful singer/songwriter of all time.

Christened ‘Reginald Dwight’, he was a shy boy with Buddy Holly glasses who grew up in the London suburb of Pinner and dreamed of becoming a pop star.  By the age of twenty-three, he was on his first tour of America, facing an astonished audience in his tight silver hotpants, bare legs and a T-shirt with Rock and Roll emblazoned across it in sequins.  Elton John had arrived and the music world would never be the same again.

His life has been full of drama, from the early rejection of his work with songwriting partner Bernie Taupin to spinning out of control as a chart-topping superstar; from half-heartedly trying to drown himself in his LA swimming pool to disco-dancing with the Queen; from friendships with John Lennon, Freddie Mercury and George Michael to setting up his AIDS Foundation. All the while, Elton was hiding a drug addiction that would grip him for over a decade.

In Me, Elton also writes powerfully about getting clean and changing his life, about finding love with David Furnish and becoming a father. In a voice that is warm, humble and open, this is Elton on his music and his relationships, his passions and his mistakes. This is a story that will stay with you, by a living legend.

The book will be released on October 15, 2019 and you can pre-order your copy HERE.

Howard Stern Announces His First Book In More Than 20 Years

Howard Stern’s first book in more than twenty years, Howard Stern Comes Again, will be published by Simon & Schuster on May 14, 2019.

Private Parts, published in 1993, was at that time the fastest-selling book in the history of Simon & Schuster. When the first-printing of 250,000 copies sold out in just a few hours, a second printing of 600,000 copies was ordered. Within two weeks the book would be in its eighth printing, for a total of more than one million copies. So great was the demand that 10,000 people turned up for a signing at the midtown Barnes & Noble, creating a massive traffic jam in which Stern himself was trapped, effectively shutting down Fifth Avenue. Private Parts went on to spend 20 weeks on the New York Times bestseller list—all the more remarkable considering that several national accounts refused to sell the book.

Stern’s follow-up, Miss America, released in 1995, sold even faster. Barnes & Noble recorded 33,000 sales on publication date—a one-day record for the chain at that time. 15,000 people showed up for a signing at a Borders Books & Music in Los Angeles. Miss America spent 16 weeks on the New York Times bestseller list.

“I’ve been waiting two years for this book to be finished, because Howard Stern told me to be patient,” said Jonathan Karp, Publisher of Simon & Schuster. “It was well worth the wait. Howard Stern Comes Again is certain to be one of the most entertaining and widely read books of the year.”

Stern, when asked to comment, offered “F*#k Hemingway! I put my heart and soul into this book and could not be more proud of it.”

Mike Barker To Direct Adaptation of The Talisman

Mike Barker (The Handmaid’s Tale, Fargo, Outlander) will be directing The Talisman feature film adaptation based on Stephen King and Peter Straub’s 1984 bestselling fantasy novel.

The Talisman follows Jack Sawyer, a young boy in possession of a powerful talisman that can save his mother’s life, who is forced to go on the run from the inhabitants of a magical parallel universe who have discovered how to travel between worlds.

King and Straub wrote a follow-up novel, Black House, in 2001, which follows a now-adult Jack as a retired Los Angeles homicide detective trying to solve a series of murders in a small Wisconsin town.

From Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Partners and The Kennedy/Marshall Company, the feature will be produced by Frank Marshall while former Amblin CEO Michael Wright will executive produce. Chris Sparling (Buried) is attached to write the adapted screenplay.

The Talisman joins the ever-growing list of big-screen Stephen King adaptations in the works. Dennis Widmyer and Kevin Kolsch’s reimagining of Pet Sematary will arrive in theaters on April 5. IT: Chapter Two and Doctor Sleep are both in post-production at Warner Bros. King’s work can also be seen on the small screen, as The Outsider is currently in production at HBO. Mr. Mercedes was also recently renewed for a third season by Audience Network.
