Stephen King Has Thoughts About Stephen King TV Shows

Stephen King has written some of the most beloved horror novels in the history of popular fiction, and many have been turned into equally acclaimed and successful films. Movies like “Carrie,” “Stand by Me” and “The Shawshank Redemption” have more than earned esteemed spots within the cinematic canon. Others — “Maximum Overdrive,” “Thinner,” “The Dark Tower” — have not.

But what about the small screen? As with the film adaptations, attempts to bring King’s books to life on TV have had mixed results, and few have reached the heights of “The Green Mile” or “Misery.” But thanks to the longer running time afforded by a series, several of King’s more unwieldy novels have proved better suited to television than to the multiplex.

“That is the great thing about TV,” King said, calling from his home in Bangor, Maine. “You can take these things as they are and expand more.”

With a new adaptation of one of the author’s longest, most complex novels, “The Stand,” arriving Thursday on CBS All Access, King looked back at the best and worst adaptations of his stories for television.

Suntup Editions To Publish Robert A. Heinlein’s Starship Troopers Limited Edition Book

One of the greatest science-fiction military adventures of all time, Robert A. Heinlein’s Starship Troopers is a timeless classic as resonant and influential today, as it was when first published.

Set 700 years in the future, Johnnie Rico never intended to join the infantry, but now that he is in the thick of it he must fight for his life; first in the toughest boot camp in the Universe, and then thrust into battle against humankind’s most alarming enemy.

So convincing and realistically imagined was Starship Troopers that the space war epic was considered highly controversial upon its release with several critics claiming it glorified the military and violence. Still, there was no denying Heinlein was at the peak of his powers as a writer. Starship Troopers received the Hugo Award for Best Novel in 1960, and by 1980 it had been translated into eleven languages and was still selling strongly. Today, it is regarded as a key work of the 1950’s, responsible for popularizing the subgenre of military science fiction.

Engrossing and fast-paced, Heinlein’s classic is so much more than a science-fiction novel. It is an intense discussion of ideas ranging from the political to the philosophical.

Suntup Editions To Publish Robert A. Heinlein’s Stranger In A Strange Land Limited Edition Book

The first science-fiction novel to enter The New York Times bestseller list, Robert A. Heinlein’s Stranger in a Strange Land is one of the genre’s most groundbreaking works of literary fiction.

Valentine Michael Smith is human, but he has never met another member of the human race. After being raised by Martians, he is sent to Earth, where he must learn what it means to be human. On this planet, he struggles to understand the social mores and prejudices of human nature that are so alien to him, while his own powers — including telepathy, clairvoyance, telekenesis, and teleportation — make him a God amongst humans.

Stranger in a Strange Land is Heinlein’s deliberate attempt to challenge social mores, exploring the meaning and relevance of institutions including religion, monogamy, money, and the fear of death. Generating considerable controversy upon its release, the novel was banned from school libraries and reading lists, while many reviewers took offense to what they assumed was Heinlein’s view of how society should be. Heinlein later stated, “I was not giving answers. I was trying to shake the reader loose from some preconceptions and induce him to think for himself, along new and fresh lines. … It is an invitation to think – not to believe.”

Stranger in a Strange Land won the Hugo Award for Best Novel in 1962.
