FX Developing Carrie Limited Series Based On Stephen King’s Novel

FX is in the very early stage of developing a limited series of Stephen King’s classic Carrie.

The novel, King’s legendary debut, centers on Carrie White, a high school teenager picked on by her classmates but with an extraordinary gift: she can move things with her mind. An act of kindness, as spontaneous as the vicious taunts of her classmates, offers Carrie a chance to be normal… Until unexpected cruelty turns her gift into a weapon of horror and destruction that no one will ever forget.

Carrie was previously adapted in 1976 by director Brian De Palma and writer Lawrence D. Cohen. The movie received two Academy Award nominations, including Best Actress in a Leading Role for star Sissy Spacek.

Other adapted versions of the story include 1988’s Broadway show Carrie: The Musical, the 2002 TV movie from David Carson and Bryan Fuller, and the 2013 remake starring Chloe Grace Moretz and Julianne Moore, written by Lawrence D. Cohen and Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa and directed by Kimberly Pierce.

Carrie joins a list of King titles being adapted for the small and big screen, including Epix’s Jerusalem’s Lot, MGM’s The Dark Half, CBS All Access’ The Stand, and HBO’s The Outsider.

About the Book:

Carrie was the odd one at school; the one whose reflexes were always off in games, whose clothes never really fit, who never got the point of a joke. And so she became the joke, the brunt of teenaged cruelties that puzzled her as much as they wounded her.

There was hardly any comfort in playing her private game, because like so many things in Carrie’s life, it was sinful. Or so her mother said. Carrie could make things move—by concentrating on them, by willing them to move. Small things, like marbles, would start dancing. Or a candle would fall. A door would lock. This was her game, her power, her sin, firmly repressed like everything else about Carrie.

One act of kindness, as spontaneous as the vicious jokes of her classmates, offered Carrie a new look at herself the fateful night of her senior prom. But another act of furious cruelty forever changed things and turned her clandestine game into a weapon of horror and destruction.

She made a lighted candle fall, and she locked the doors…

PS Publishing To Release 40th Anniversary Edition of Stephen King’s Carrie in April 2014

carrie-deluxe-40th-anniversary-edition-by-stephen-king-2056-p

Carrie was written on Stephen King’s wife Tabitha’s portable typewriter while the couple and their then two children were living in a trailer. It started life as a short story intended for Cavalier magazine, but King threw out the first three pages.

Fortunately, his wife noticed the pages in the trash and fished them out, advising her husband to go on and finish the tale . . . but he went one step better: he expanded it into a novel.

“I persisted because I was dry and had no better ideas . . . my considered opinion was that I had written the world’s all-time loser.”
