The Karate Kid Saga Cobra Kai Comes To Netflix

Netflix today announced it is the new home to Cobra Kai, the series continuation of the iconic The Karate Kid film franchise from Sony Pictures Television. The film’s stars, Ralph Macchio and William Zabka reprise their star-making roles in the series along with Martin Kove as sensei John Kreese.

Under the terms of the deal, the first two seasons of Sony Pictures Television’s Cobra Kai will premiere on Netflix this year, with an all-new third season to follow.

Cobra Kai takes place 30 years after the events of the 1984 All Valley Karate Tournament, where a now successful Daniel LaRusso (Ralph Macchio) struggles to maintain balance in his life without the guidance of Mr. Miyagi, and must face his previous adversary, down-and-out Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka), who seeks redemption by reopening the infamous Cobra Kai karate dojo.

James Lassiter and Caleeb Pinkett executive produce for Overbrook Entertainment along with Susan Ekins in association with Sony Pictures Television, with Macchio and Zabka serving as co-executive producers.

Cobra Kai Searching For New Streaming Home Ahead of Season 3 Premiere

After two acclaimed and successful seasons at the video-sharing platform, the Karate Kid sequel series Cobra Kai is looking for a new streaming home ahead of its third season premiere as YouTube is looking to move away from scripted programming.

YouTube has co-produced the series with Sony Pictures TV for the three seasons but sources report that as the service looks to move more into unscripted programming, they informed the studio they would not be commissioning a fourth season of the series. Given its record-breaking viewership of over 80 million viewers across the first and second season premieres, Sony didn’t want to the series to end and has been negotiating with YouTube for the rights to take it to a new streaming platform for its upcoming third season and any future seasons, as well as non-exclusive rights to stream past seasons.

Sources report that Netflix and Hulu are currently the top contenders for the rights to the project and that YouTube will not formally release the rights to the series or debut the new season until a new home has been secured.

In Cobra Kai, Ralph Macchio and William Zabka revisit their star-making roles from the iconic film franchise, The Karate Kid. The epic adversaries return to the dojo, thirty years after the events of the 1984 All Valley Karate Tournament. A down-and-out Johnny Lawrence (Zabka) seeks redemption by reopening the infamous Cobra Kai karate dojo, reigniting his rivalry with a now-successful Daniel LaRusso (Macchio), who has been struggling to maintain balance in his life without the guidance of his mentor, Mr. Miyagi.

YouTube officially renewed its critically-acclaimed martial arts drama series for a third season which is scheduled to premiere in 2020. The upcoming season will see Daniel LaRusso returning to Japan in order to continue to navigate through life without the mentorship of his Karate Kid sensei, Mr. Miyagi. LaRusso fought in Japan during the events of 1986’s The Karate Kid Part II.

The first season of Cobra Kai proved to be a strong success for the video service, with the first episode garnering over 50 million views within five months of airing and critics and audiences praising the series, awarding it the rare 100 percent “Certified Fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The second season also opened with a record-breaking premiere and received highly strong reviews from critics, currently sitting at an 88 percent approval rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes.

Cobra Kai Kicks Its Way Into Comics

IDW Publishing brings the lifelong rivalry between Daniel LaRusso and Johnny Lawrence out of the dojo and into comic book stores with an all-new Cobra Kai: The Karate Kid Saga Continues miniseries, slated for release in Fall 2019. In collaboration with Overbrook Entertainment and Sony Pictures Television, IDW will develop new stories set within the continuity of the YouTube Premium original series, based on iconic characters from the cultural touchstone Karate Kid film series.

The Cobra Kai: The Karate Kid Saga Continues comic book series will be written by Denton J. Tipton (The X-Files) and illustrated by Kagan McLeod (Infinite Kung Fu). The first issue, slated to debut in October, will feature cover artwork by McLeod, as well as photos of the beloved cast and other iconic surprises.

Starting with “Johnny’s Story” Part 1 (of 4) in October, readers will see The Karate Kid movie in a whole new light in this retelling through the eyes of Johnny Lawrence, two-time All Valley Tournament champion. When the new kid makes moves on the girl that broke Johnny’s heart, he vows to settle the score and win back his love… or so goes the story Sensei Lawrence tells his students nearly 35 years later.

“I saw The Karate Kid for the first time during a lock-in at the Y. The skeleton costumes captured my attention, while the Miyagi-isms pulled me into the story. And like everyone else at the time, I caught Karate Kid fever. Fast-forward 35 years, and being just a small part of the franchise has made me feel young and inspired all over again,” says Tipton.

“Cobra Kai has been a revelation to new and longtime fans alike,” says IDW Sr. Director of Licensing & Business Development, Eric Moss. “With its complex, layered characters and perfect blend of nostalgia and freshness, it begs for more stories—and IDW is honored to enter the ring. The action and philosophies of martial arts are tailor-made for comics, and, just like a bonsai, we look forward to firmly planting our roots in that world and branching off into wondrous new directions.”

Cobra Kai debuted on YouTube Premium on May 2, 2018, reigniting the 30-year rivalry between Daniel LaRusso (played by Ralph Macchio) and Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka), whose legendary conflict at the 1984 All Valley Karate Tournament was the climax of the beloved film, The Karate Kid.
