Today at the D23 2019 Expo, Lucas film and Disney+ officially announced the long-rumored Obi-Wan series, and confirmed the return of Ewan McGregor as the iconic Jedi!
McGregor received a warm welcome when he arrived onstage to make it official. It was also revealed that scripts are currently being written and shooting will happen sometime next year. The new series will take place eight years after the events of Revenge of the Sith, where we last saw Obi-Wan delivering the infant Luke Skywalker to his Tatooine homestead. An updated timeline graphic shown at the event places the Obi-Wan show as happening somewhere in the middle of the span of events in Solo: A Star Wars Story.
McGregor took over the role of Obi-Wan for the Star Wars prequel trilogy two decades ago from the late Alec Guinness. His last live-action appearance was in 2005’s Revenge of the Sith. However, McGregor also lent his voice to Rey’s Force vision in The Force Awakens. Additionally, McGregor hasn’t been shy about his desire to reprise his role.
Two years ago, director Stephen Daldry was supposedly lined up to direct a standalone Obi-Wan film. Unfortunately, the dismal box office performance of Solo: A Star Wars Story put all the spinoff movies on hold.
No other details about the potential Obi-Wan series are currently available. Disney+ already has two live-action Star Wars series lined up: The Mandalorian and the untitled Cassian Andor series.
Walt Disney Pictures has revealed the first trailer for Lady and the Tramp, the live-action remake of the classic animated film coming to the Disney+ platform. Featuring the titular romantic couple, voiced by Tessa Thompson and Justin Theroux.
Lady and the Tramp tells the story of an American Cocker Spaniel named Lady who lives with an upper-middle-class family but is set astray when the family has a baby. Lady ends up meeting a mongrel known as the Tramp on the streets. They embark on a romantic journey and eventually fall in love.
The film stars Tessa Thompson (Sorry to Bother You, Men In Black) as Lady, Justin Theroux (The Spy Who Dumped Me) as the Tramp, Thomas Mann (Kong: Skull Island) as Jim Dear, Kiersey Clemons (Flatliners) as Jim’s wife Darling, Ashley Jensen (The Lobster, Hysteria) as Jackie the Scottish Terrier, Benedict Wong (Doctor Strange) voicing Bull, an English bulldog, Sam Elliott as the voice of Trusty the Bloodhound, Janelle Monae as the voice of Peg the Pekingese, Yvette Nicole Brown as Aunt Sarah, Adrian Martinez as Elliot and Arturo Castro as Marco.
Charlie Bean (The LEGO Ninjago Movie, Tron Uprising) will be directing the live-action/CG hybrid film from a script by Andrew Bujalski. Aside from Mann and Clemons, most of the cast will play CGI characters as we have seen in recent Disney adaptations such as Jungle Book and Beauty and the Beast.
The upcoming live-action remake is slated to debut on November 12 on Disney’s upcoming streaming service Disney+.

This July, the legendary Jack Kirby will be honored for his remarkable creative achievements as a Disney Legend in a ceremony to be held at this year’s D23 Expo in Anaheim, California. Hosted by Disney Chairman and CEO Bob Iger, the Disney Legends Award ceremony will take place at 10am on Friday, July 14, in Hall D23.
Jack Kirby first grabbed our attention in the spring of 1941 with Captain America, a character he created with Joe Simon. Kirby then followed this debut with a prolific output of comic books in the Western, Romance, and Monster genres – all a prelude to his defining work helping to create the foundations of the Marvel Universe. For the next decade, Kirby and co-creator Stan Lee would introduce a mind-boggling array of new characters and teams — including the Avengers, Hulk, Thor, Iron Man, Silver Surfer, Ant-Man, Wasp, Black Panther, S.H.I.E.L.D., and the Inhumans. Kirby was inducted into the Eisner Hall of Fame’s 1987 inaugural class and continued creating comics throughout the ’90s before passing away in 1994.
Other honorees of this year’s Legends Award are Carrie Fisher, Clyde “Gerry” Geronimi, Manuel Gonzales, Mark Hamill, Stan Lee, Garry Marshall, Julie Taymor, and Oprah Winfrey.
Tickets for D23 Expo 2017 are available for $81 for one-day adult admission and $59 for children 3–9. Members of D23: The Official Disney Fan Club can purchase tickets for $72 for a one-day adult admission and $53 for children 3–9. Multi-day tickets are also available.
