At the Marvel Cup o’ Joe panel at the 2014 Comic-Con International: San Diego, the publisher announced a brand new line of comics featuring the character from the original Star Wars trilogy.
Three titles were announced, with the first being an ongoing series simply titled Star Wars, written by Jason Aaron (Original Sin, Thor: God of Thunder) and drawn by John Cassaday (Uncanny Avengers, Astonishing X-Men). The series picks up after the event of Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope, with Luke Skywalker, Leia Organa and Han Solo leading the Rebel Alliance, emboldened by their successful attack on the Death Star, as it goes on the offensive against the Empire. But things prove more difficult than they’d planned when Darth Vader shows up, with the Imperial Fleet at his back. Star War #1 ships in January.
Speaking of Darth Vader, the second series announced was Star Wars: Darth Vader, written by Kieron Gillen (Uncanny X-Men, Journey Into Mystery) and drawn by Salvador Larocca (Invincible Iron Man, Uncanny Avengers), with covers by Adi Granov (Iron Man: Extremis). Like Star Wars, this series pick up after the events of A New Hope, but shows you the other side of the war. While Darth Vader is the lone survivor of the Empire’s first crushing military defeat, he has also lost the faith and good will of his master, the Emperor. Now Vader must remind the entire Empire of why he is a figure to fear. The first issue ships in February.
The final series announced is a 5-issue miniseres, Star Wars: Princess Leia, from writer Mark Waid (Daredevil, Indestructible Hulk) and artist Terry Dodson (Uncanny X-Men, Marvel Knights Spider-Man). Like the other series, Princess Leia picks up after the events of A New Hope, with and sees Leia, a trained diplomat and rebel agent, coming to terms with the destruction of her peaceful homeworld, Alderaan. The first issue arrives in stores in March.
Remember when you were a kid and cereal boxes had prizes!
You could care less about the sugary breakfast food advertised on the box; it was all about the PRIZE. After promising to do your chores and eat all of your veggies you would beg your mom for Cap’n Crunch, Freakies or Quisp. After masterfully wearing her down, she would succumb and hopefully toss the desired container into the shopping cart. Once home, you would madly tear open the top of the box, blindly force your hand down through the layers of cereal to grasp Excalibur – a baking soda powered submarine, balloon powered car or the Flintstones pencil holder.
Now you can relive that nostalgic moment…
Between now and the end of the year, General Mills is bringing back Star Wars pens in specially marked boxes of Honey Nut Cheerios, Cinnamon Toast Crunch, Reese’s Puffs, Golden Grahams, Cocoa Puffs, Trix and Lucky Charms.
Star Wars fans and cereal lovers can visit the “Cereal Wars” Tumblr for Vine and Instagram videos and share memorable movie scenes, quotes and battles.
Fans should look for Darth Vader, Mace Windu, Yoda, Obi-Wan Kenobi, a Storm Trooper, Boba Fett, Chewbacca and Anakin Skywalker in specially marked boxes.
