Mondo x Acme Archives Present: SWxMM, A Mike Mitchell Star Wars Gallery Show

Mondo Gallery is thrilled to announce its first show of 2017, “Mondo x Acme Archives Present: SWxMM,” featuring celebrated artist Mike Mitchell’s brand new character portraits of some of the most beloved heroes and villains in the Star Wars universe. Rebel scum, scruffy nerf herders, Sith Lords, golden rods, laser brains, and more will be on display with Mitchell’s dignified and iconic portrait treatment. In addition to new prints, all of Mitchell’s previously released Star Wars character portraits will be on display with a very limited number of each available for purchase, including the very first portrait released in the series with Acme Archives, “Red 5.”  The show will kick off with an opening reception, open to the public, on Friday, March 10 from 7pm to 10pm and will run during regular hours until Monday, March 13. Mondo Gallery is located at 4115 Guadalupe Street in Austin, TX.

After first partnering with Acme Archives in 2016 to debut Star Wars character portraits, from the classic Luke Skywalker in X-Wing flight gear to new heroic favorites like The Force Awakens’ Rey, Mondo and Acme Archives are excited to once again invite fans to journey to a galaxy far, far away.

“I have a particular and unyielding love for the designs in Star Wars, and I’m so stoked that I got to spend a year picking out my favorite characters and bringing them to life in my own way,” said Mike Mitchell.

“Over the past year, Mike’s Star Wars art print series has become something really special. As with all of Mike’s work, the pieces are even more powerful when shown together. We are excited to show the entire collection in one space, plus a handful of new surprises. If you’re a fan of the Star Wars universe, you don’t want to miss this one,” said Mondo Co-Founder/Creative Director Mitch Putnam.

To coincide with their first gallery event of the year, the full Mondo team will participate in its very first Reddit AMA on Tuesday, March 7 to discuss the show, additional plans for 2017, and well… anything! Follow Mondo’s social media channels for more details on timing.

MONDO Announces Eyes Without A Face Gallery Show Featuring The Art of Jason Edmiston Opening On March 13, 2015

MONDO presents “Eyes Without A Face,” the next gallery show, featuring artist Jason Edmiston and an eye-opening collection of original art based on 1:1 representations of some of pop culture’s most iconic peepers. The show will kick off with an opening night reception, open to the public, on March 13, 2015 from 7-10 PM and will run during regular hours until April 4, 2015. MONDO Gallery is located at 4115 Guadalupe Street in Austin, TX.

“Eyes Without A Face” will feature approximately 150 portraits of eyes culled together from film, music, comics, video games, toys and more. Each piece will be presented at a 1:1 ratio – from tiny plastic toy people, humanoid actors, to giant beasts and more. The concept allowed Edmiston to curate a wide spectrum of characters for the gallery in a way that made thematic sense. Part of the fun will be trying to figure out all 150 characters at the show.

Discussing the genesis of the show’s concept Edmiston said, “I had the idea for the show when I was working on my last solo exhibition for Mondo Gallery. I was driving around town with my wife bouncing concepts off of her. I checked my rear view and had the idea. The shape of the mirror made me think of just using a tight cropping of eyes for the basis of a show. I also kind of wanted to see what it would feel like to be in a gallery surrounded by eyes staring at you. It should be quite an experience to stand in the center of the gallery and slowly rotate 360 degrees, creating a feeling of being watched by your heroes.”

Edmiston has become well known and highly sought after for his eye-popping and colorful acrylic paintings of pop culture figures. His most jaw-dropping pieces, like The Hand of Ming, have always been incredibly expressive and successful in drawing out the emotion of the character. “Eyes Without A Face” is allowing Edmiston to hone in the eyes, the most expressive part of any body – real or imagined.

MONDO House Show To Open On January 30, 2015

At the end of this month, MONDO will be opening their Gallery doors for a House Show featuring some of their rare and most iconic posters. For the first time, the gallery walls will be filled with prints released from 2007 to Present, hand-picked from their archive by Mondo art directors Justin Ishmael, Mitch Putnam & Rob Jones. The show will offer a unique chance to see 30+ posters from incredibly talented artists like Todd Slater, Aaron Horkey, Tomer Hanuka and many more!

Stop by the opening reception on January 30, 2015 to hang out at the gallery with fellow fans without the typical opening-night frenzy. Though the posters will not be for sale, MONDO will have a variety of merchandise available, including a new Thrasher Logo pin, t-shirts & keepsakes from the Gallery’s latest acquisition – an old-fashioned penny press. Additionally, they’ll be auctioning off a Star Wars Variant poster set by Tyler Stout with all proceeds going to charity.

MONDO hopes to make exhibits featuring older work a regular thing, especially for those visiting Austin in between new exhibits.

The House Show opening reception is Friday, January 30, 2015 from 7pm – 9pm. Gallery hours for this exhibit are Thursday – Saturday from 12pm – 7pm. The show runs from January 30th through February 21st.

The Walking Dead Gallery & Auction Announced For Hero Initiative

Last year, Walking Dead writer Robert Kirkman’s comic imprint Skybound and the Hero Initiative charity gave over 100 blank Walking Dead #100 covers to assorted comic-industry notables for them to sketch their own undead-oriented illustrations.

Today it was announced that the covers will be on display together at a free, one-night-only, Hero Initiative-benefiting show and auction held at L.A.’s Gusford gallery on Friday, May 31.

Four of the covers will be auctioned off during the soiree — two on eBay and another pair on-site — including one that will be created in the course of the evening by artist Todd Nauck (Invincible Universe). Nauck will be joined at the event by fellow sketch-cover contributors Sina Grace and Jason Reeves. The remainder of the covers will be auctioned off via eBay beginning June 4.

The Hero Initiative is a non-profit dedicated to providing medical aid and financial support to comic-book artists in need.
