Richard Chizmar Discusses Working With Stephen King

When it was released in 2017, Gwendy’s Button Box was an oddity for Stephen King fans. The fantasy book was short, for one thing, just larger than the size of a novella. And it featured a co-author who is not one of King’s writer sons: Richard Chizmar, owner of Cemetery Dance Publications.

Most notably, it was a story that King didn’t actually finish; he showed the incomplete story to Chizmar, who was able to complete the novel.

If Chizmar was intimidated by working with one of the world’s best known and best selling authors, it didn’t stop him from doing it again. Chizmar is back with King, who took an editor’s role, for a sequel, Gwendy’s Magic Feather (out in paperback from Gallery Books, Jan. 21), and there are plans for an as-yet-unwritten third book to complete the series.

The first book was about Gwendy Peterson, a young girl in 1974 who is given a mysterious box, by a mysterious man in black, which could cause global cataclysms. The sequel, which also takes place mostly in King’s fictional town of Castle Rock, Maine, follows Gwendy to 1999, when she’s become an author, filmmaker, and, most surprisingly, a junior member of the U.S. Congress.

Chizmar talked to Kirkus about the collaboration HERE.

Stephen King Made A Frightening Proposal With Gwendy’s Button Box: Write A Story With Him

One should never take candy from strangers. Especially if it comes in a container that may have apocalyptic powers.

In Gwendy’s Button Box, the new novella from authors Stephen King and Richard Chizmar, that’s the premise: A heavy-set young girl meets a strange man in a black bowler hat who has a gift for her. She doesn’t know what to do with the buttons and levers on his fancy, peculiar wooden box, but the candy it distributes brings her happiness far beyond a brief sugar rush. It makes her stronger. More confident. More beautiful and brave.

But the buttons … those have a much darker purpose. This is a gift fraught with both responsibility and menace. That’s how Chizmar, the publisher of Cemetery Dance magazine and a renowned horror author in his own right, felt when King invited him to collaborate on the story, which hits store shelves Tuesday.

“We were emailing in early January and he mentioned offhandedly a story he’d started some time over the summer, and he just couldn’t finish it,” Chizmar tells EW. “As I often do, if he mentions a new story, I always say, ‘Well hey, send it to me if you want. I’d love to read it.’ I didn’t expect anything to come of it. But the next evening a file titled Gwendy showed up, and the body of the email read: ‘Do whatever you want with it.’”

Cemetery Dance Publications, the world’s leading publisher of collectible horror and suspense books, has just announced Gwendy’s Button Box by Stephen King and Richard Chizmar, an original, never-before-published novella that marks a return to King’s fabled town of Castle Rock, Maine, and the first-ever collaboration between these two long-time friends and award-winning authors. “It was a pleasure to work with Rich Chizmar one-on-one after all these years,” Stephen King said. “I had a story I couldn’t finish, and he showed me the way home with style and panache. It was a good time, and I think readers will have a good time reading it. If they are left with questions, and maybe have a few arguments, all the better.”

“Steve and I have corresponded about books and movies and life for twenty years now,” said Richard Chizmar, author of the acclaimed short story collection A Long December and the driving force behind the StephenKingRevisited.com website. “I’m a huge admirer of both his work and the man himself. Writing Gwendy’s Button Box with Steve was truly a dream come true for me.”

“Steve sent me the first chunk of a short story,” Chizmar explained. “I added quite a bit and sent it back to him. He did a pass, then bounced it back to me for another pass. Then, we did the same thing all over again – one more draft each. Next thing you know, we had a full-length novella on our hands. We took a free hand in rewriting each other and adding new ideas and characters. The whole process took about a month.”

Here’s some detail on the story:

“There are three ways up to Castle View from the town of Castle Rock: Route 117, Pleasant Road, and the Suicide Stairs. Every day in the summer of 1974 twelve-year-old Gwendy Peterson has taken the stairs, which are held by strong (if time-rusted) iron bolts and zig-zag up the cliffside.

At the top of the stairs, Gwendy catches her breath and listens to the shouts of the kids on the playground. From a bit farther away comes the chink of an aluminum bat hitting a baseball as the Senior League kids practice for the Labor Day charity game.

One day, a stranger calls to Gwendy: ‘Hey, girl. Come on over here for a bit. We ought to palaver, you and me.’

On a bench in the shade sits a man in black jeans, a black coat, like for a suit, and a white shirt unbuttoned at the top. On his head is a small neat black hat. The time will come when Gwendy has nightmares about that hat…”
