Stranger Things Themed Ice Cream Shop Scoops Ahoy Pops Up In Burbank

The wildly popular Netflix series Stranger Things has transformed a Baskin-Robbins in Burbank into a retro style ice cream parlor.

Through Sunday, July 14, the shop will double as Scoops Ahoy, the nautical-themed ice cream parlor (and employer of Joe Keery’s character, Steve) that is a favorite hot-weather hangout for Hawkins’ heroes. The immersive takeover will transport Stranger Things fans to the summer of ’85. Even the staff’s uniforms and the drive-through got a makeover.

The menu features a bunch of new Stranger Things frozen treats!

To transform Baskin-Robbins’ L.A. flagship, Stranger Things creators Matt and Ross Duffer granted the ice cream company exclusive behind-the-scenes access: “We read the scripts back in October; [the Duffer brothers] allowed us in their offices and we got three hours to read,” David Nagel, Baskin-Robbins senior director of consumer engagement, told The Hollywood Reporter.

Naturally, the store houses an Instagram-worthy, ship-themed photo opp wall with wood paneling, brass portholes and a working brass bell. The shop’s floors and walls were covered in blue-and-white checkered and striped vinyl, freezer door handles were swapped out with nautical rope and every visible Baskin-Robbins logo (even on napkin holders and the sliding glass doors) was replaced with the fictional dessert counter’s anchor logo. Of course, there are plenty of Easter eggs for fans to discover.

To pull it all off, Baskin-Robbins worked closely with Stranger Things set designer Jess Royal on the interiors. “She was talking about all the detail and research that she goes into, so we started doing our own research about the ’80s and how we could be totally authentic. Everything we’ve done, we’re matching to the show, even down to our TV commercials,” says Nagel. The brand’s research and development team (“They are the best anywhere; they’re a mix of food scientists and chefs”) whipped up the menu.

Stranger Things Are Happening At Baskin-Robbins

Baskin-Robbins, the world’s largest chain of specialty ice cream shops, is partnering with Netflix to give Stranger Things fans something to sink their teeth into leading up to the show’s highly-anticipated premiere this July 4th. Because after all, even Demogorgons love ice cream.

Starting in June, Stranger Things are happening at Baskin-Robbins. First, both ice cream and Stranger Things fans will be able enjoy two exclusive Stranger Things-inspired Flavors of the Month:

– Eleven’s Heaven: a waffle cone-flavored ice cream with chocolate-coated sugar cone pieces and a chocolate icing flavored ribbon

– Upside Down Pralines: chocolate ice cream with praline pecans and a chocolate-caramel flavored ribbon

Two Flavors of the Month instead of one are just the strange beginning; fans can get prepared for season three all month long with more Stranger Things inspiration, such as:

– Upside Down Sundae: a sundae featuring the Upside Down Pralines Flavor of the Month that’s built upside down with the toppings on the bottom

– Demogorgon Sundae: a waffle bowl sundae that frightfully resembles a Demogorgon monster

– Byers’ House Lights Polar Pizza® Ice Cream Treat: a flash back to season one that includes a Chocolate Chip Polar Pizza crust with Snickers ice cream, topped with strings of fudge and M&Ms Chocolate Candy Christmas lights

– USS Butterscotch Quarts: butterscotch flavored ice cream loaded with butterscotch toffee and a toffee ribbon, a sneak preview of what’s to come in July

– Elevenade Freeze: a refreshing summer drink made with vanilla ice cream and Minute Maid Lemonade

– Exclusive Stranger Things Merchandise: including a one-of-a-kind Steve Funko figure, 80’s-inspired magnets and sticker sets and Stranger Things t-shirts: all available at participating shops, while supplies last

– Collectible Containers: take home fresh-packed ice cream in one of four limited edition containers featuring Stranger Things designs: Baskin-Robbins double-dares fans to collect them all

“We wanted to give fans a taste of the new season of Stranger Things and are thrilled to partner with Netflix to give customers across the country an experience straight out of Hawkins, Indiana,” said Carol Austin, Vice President of Marketing for Baskin-Robbins. “Whether you love the show or just love some seriously delicious ice cream creations, we’ve got something for everyone.”

Hungry for more? The curiosity voyage continues on Sunday, June 9 from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m. with an Elevenade Freeze National Sampling Day. This flavor journey continues full steam ahead as the Baskin-Robbins and Netflix teams also bring season three’s Scoops Ahoy Ice Cream Shop to life with a one-of-a-kind ice cream truck that’ll be serving up scoops to fans on the West Coast in June.

If you’re too busy streaming seasons one and two to leave the house, Baskin-Robbins also offers online ordering for quick and easy in-store pickup (www.baskinrobbins.com/ordering) and deliveries through DoorDash (www.DoorDash.com/baskinrobbins).

Ben & Jerry’s Unveils Four New ‘Core’ Flavors

tumblr_n1m9fhKVvD1qap6dco1_1280

Ben & Jerry’s has released four new ice cream flavors. The new frozen treats are part of the “Core” line: The containers have two flavors, one on each side of a fudge or jam center. If that’s not decadent enough, there are chunks of candy or brownies in the ice cream.

“We wanted to blow out the concept of fun flavors, chunks and swirls and take it over the top,” said Eric Fredette, the lead flavor developer for Ben & Jerry’s.

The four new flavors are:

r-HAZED-AND-CONFUSED-403xFB

– Hazed & Confused: chocolate and hazelnut ice creams with fudge chips and a hazelnut fudge core.

r-THATS-MY-JAM-403xFB

– That’s My Jam: raspberry and chocolate ice creams with fudge chips and a raspberry core.

r-PEANUT-BUTTER-FUDGE-403xFBcredit

– Peanut Butter Fudge: chocolate and peanut butter ice creams with mini peanut butter cups and a peanut butter fudge core.

r-CARAMEL-ICE-CREAM-403xFB

– Salted Caramel: sweet cream ice cream with blonde brownies and a salty caramel core.

The pints ($4.39 each) are rolling out to stores this month. In the spring, Ben & Jerry’s scoop shops will offer customizable Core Sundaes with a core of hot fudge or caramel between any two flavors.

Ben & Jerry’s Announces City Churn Campaign, 5 U.S. Cities Can Vote For & Name New Ice Cream Flavors

ben-jerrys-city-churned-hed2-2013

Ben & Jerry’s is mixing up something unique in popular U.S. cities: a flavor as local as a city itself. Calling it “City Churned,” the ice cream maker will be the first of its kind to crowdsource locally inspired flavors that are literally created by the cities themselves.

The “City Churned” campaign kicks off in five markets: Washington, D.C., San Francisco, New York, Portland and Seattle. Each market will have its own microsite that will track real-time votes from the motions and residents of each market. Over the course of several weeks, Ben & Jerry’s will tabulate the activities of each city by means of public transportation, tweets, traffic, landmarks, and of course its people, to create and name its own city-inspired Ben & Jerry’s flavor.

“Name a city and you feel a pulse that is individual to that hub.  There’s a personality to each location that is distinctive unto itself… Some would say “a flavor,” said Dave Stever, Director of Marketing. “We’re going to give our fans something we’ve never given them before: a chance to mix up an ice cream as unique as that city’s own flavor,” Stever added.

For example, in D.C. Ben & Jerry’s filmed and tracked city joggers to help decide between the ingredients peppermint and marshmallow. Northbound jogging traffic along the Potomac became votes for marshmallow, while southbound joggers counted as votes for peppermint. In New York, on-time subway trains will count as votes for either waffle cone pieces or Spoonable Caramel, depending on the subway line. In Seattle, support for Fairtrade Chocolate or Fairtrade Vanilla will, in part, be determined by the number of plaid vs. plain shirts filmed on city streets.

Fans who aren’t present at the filming locations can also weigh in on each ingredient match-up by voting online on the “City Churned” microsite. They can also put their creativity to the test by submitting their original ideas for the flavor name.  In each market, the campaign will conclude with a community event where for one day only the flavor will be tasted and celebrated by the local fans that helped develop it.

To ensure that these “City Churned” flavors are a tribute to the cities themselves, Ben & Jerry’s is partnering with local business to source local ingredients. Companies include Divine Chocolate, Route 11 Chips, Sixpoint Brewery, Spoonable Caramel, Liddabit Sweets, TCHO Chocolate, Kika’s Treats, Rogue Ales, Portland Roasting Coffee, Theo Chocolates and Caffé Vita.

The campaign will officially kick off in each market when the beloved Ben & Jerry’s Scoop Truck rolls into each city as part of its East and West Coast “Scoop Truck” sampling tour. Consumers can also cast their “City Churned” ballots at select Scoop Truck scooping locations simply by tossing their spoons into recycling bins listed for Caramel or Fudge. Touring the west and east coast for the third summer, the Scoop Truck is still delivering frozen treats for tweets. This year, it is dishing out Ben & Jerry’s Greek Frozen Yogurt and in “City Churned” markets it will help facilitate local voting. Follow the Scoop Truck’s winding path on Twitter @BenJerrysTruck (on the East Coast) and @BenJerrysWest (on the West Coast).
