DC Direct Announces a New Line of Joker Statues

DC Direct is back! Along with announcing a return to its original name, the collectible company known for its unparalleled access to DC’s top talent and creators also unveiled a brand-new line of statues at New York Toy Fair 2020…and it’s guaranteed to put a smile on the faces of fans.

The Joker Clown Prince of Crime is a series of 7-inch statues featuring Batman’s most iconic and fearsome villain. This new array of intricately sculpted statues is the perfect companion series to DC Direct’s long-running Batman Black & White statue line and its other popular character-based statue line, Harley Quinn Red, White & Black.

Considering how influential and beloved his Batman: The Killing Joke is, it’s certainly appropriate that the first statue of the series would be The Joker by Brian Bolland. Readers familiar with The Killing Joke will instantly recognize the iconic image of the Clown Prince of Crime in a state of utter madness with both hands clutching his face in mania. Set to be released in November 2020, The Joker by Brian Bolland will be released alongside a Batman Black & White statue by Brian Bolland as well, allowing fans to truly see how well these two lines of statues will complement each other.

Following Bolland, the next statue will be The Joker by Jim Lee, which was previously released in the Batman Black & White line. Lee’s statue can now be seen for the first time in full color, appropriate for a character as flashy as the Joker. Lee’s original Joker hasn’t been released since 2009, allowing fans who missed out the first time around a chance to get their hands on this rare collectible again.

The third statue that was announced at New York Toy Fair is The Joker by Lee Bermejo. Also previously seen in the Batman Black & White series, this statue is now seen in full color for the first time as well. Based on the best-selling Joker graphic novel by Bermejo and writer Brian Azzarello, this is a much more grounded and gritty take on the villain, and features a more subdued color palette.

With the recent milestone announcement of DC Direct’s 100th Batman Black & White statue, Batman by Todd McFarlane, celebrated at last year’s San Diego Comic Con, there was no question that adding this additional 1:10 scale statue line was a fantastic idea.

“Given the success of our Batman Black & white line, it only makes sense to do a line on his arch nemesis,” said DC Direct Creative Director, Jim Fletcher.

Over the years DC Direct hopes to utilize its direct access to some of the best artists and designers in the comic world as a way to pay homage to the character by celebrating the many different interpretations of the Joker and his many unforgettable moments in vibrant hues of purple and green.

Look for the first statue by Brian Bolland in your local comic shop or online this November!

Joker To Be Released Digitally On December 17 & On Blu-ray January 7

After scorching up over $1 billion at the worldwide box office and setting the record for the highest-grossing R-rated film of all-time, Warner Bros. has unveiled the Blu-ray details and release date for Todd Phillips’ Joker! The Joaquin Phoenix-starring adaptation of the iconic DC Comics villain is set to hit shelves on January 7 and will be available for digital purchase on December 17!

Director Todd Phillips’ original, standalone origin story Joker explores the world of—and according to—Arthur Fleck. Indelibly portrayed by Phoenix, Arthur is a man facing the cruelty and outright scorn of society, along with the indifference of a system that allows him to spiral from vulnerability into depravity. A clown-for-hire by day, he strives to be a stand-up comic at night…but finds that the joke always seems to be on him. He’s out of tune with everyone around him, as evidenced by his uncontrollable, inappropriate laughter, which gains momentum as he attempts to contain it, exposing him to further ridicule—and even violence.

Arthur, who devotes himself to caring for his fragile mother, seeks out every father figure he’s never had, from wealthy businessman Thomas Wayne to TV host Murray Franklin. Caught in a cyclical existence teetering on the precipice of reality and madness, one bad decision brings about a chain reaction of escalating, ultimately deadly, events.

Joaquin Phoenix stars as the titular villain with Zazie Beetz (Deadpool 2), Bill Camp (Red Sparrow, Molly’s Game), Frances Conroy (American Horror Story), Brett Cullen (Narcos), Glenn Fleshler (Barry), Douglas Hodge (Penny Dreadful), Marc Maron (GLOW), Josh Pais (Motherless Brooklyn), and Shea Whigham (First Man).

Acclaimed Director, John Carpenter Is Writing A Joker Comic For DC

Today DC announced that acclaimed director, screenwriter and producer John Carpenter and Anthony Burch, writer of the hit video games Borderlands 2 and League of Legends, will make their DC Universe debut in a one-shot comic as part of the publisher’s “Year of the Villain” event in The Joker: Year of The Villain #1, on sale October 9.

Now a human-alien hybrid, Lex Luthor has made his appeal to the world, asking its citizens to embrace doom and give in once and for all to evil, humanity’s true nature. In exchange, he will grant them the tools to ascend to their ultimate selves. While some DC villains (and heroes) are willing to hear what “Apex Lex” has to offer, the Clown Prince of Crime isn’t going to wait around until Lex gets to him. This puts The Joker on a mission to get his swagger back in a world gone bad by out-badding everyone else, proving that the greatest evil is always the one that leaves them laughing.

“The Joker is the greatest villain in comics,” said Carpenter.  “I’m proud to be reunited with Anthony on this project.”

While this one-shot is the first time that Carpenter and Burch will be writing a DC story, they’re no strangers to collaborating on comic books that tell big, over-the-top and bombastic tales, having previously co-written BOOM! Studios’ Big Trouble in Little China: Old Man Jack miniseries.

”I’m excited beyond words to be writing for Gotham’s greatest villain,” said co-writer Burch. “I hope the Joker’s exploits make you laugh, shudder, and grow nauseous all at once.”

The Joker: Year of The Villain is a 40-page one-shot priced at $4.99 and debuts in comic book stores and online retailers on Wednesday, October 9.

Watch The First Joker Teaser Trailer

Warner Bros. Pictures has released the first Joker teaser trailer!

The film also stars Zazie Beetz (Deadpool 2), Bill Camp (Red Sparrow, Molly’s Game), Frances Conroy (American Horror Story, Castle Rock), Brett Cullen (42, Narcos), Glenn Fleshler (Billions, Barry), Douglas Hodge (Red Sparrow, Penny Dreadful), Marc Maron (Maron, GLOW), Josh Pais (Motherless Brooklyn, Going in Style), and Shea Whigham (First Man, Kong: Skull Island).

Joker centers around the iconic arch nemesis and is an original, standalone story not seen before on the big screen. Phillips’ exploration of Arthur Fleck (Phoenix), a man disregarded by society, is not only a gritty character study but also a broader cautionary tale.

Todd Phillips (The Hangover trilogy) directs from a screenplay he co-wrote with writer Scott Silver (The Fighter), based on characters from DC. The film is being produced by Phillips and Bradley Cooper under their Joint Effort banner, and Emma Tillinger Koskoff. It is executive produced by Richard Baratta, Joseph Garner, and Bruce Berman.

Behind the scenes, Phillips is joined by director of photography Lawrence Sher (Godzilla: King of the Monsters, The Hangover trilogy), production designer Mark Friedberg (Selma, The Amazing Spider-Man 2), editor Jeff Groth (War Dogs, The Hangover Part III), and Oscar-winning costume designer Mark Bridges (Phantom Thread, The Artist).

Joker is set for release on October 4 .
