Cereal has been a breakfast staple for so long it’s hard to imagine life without it. And every generation of kids knows the iconic mascots who happily watch over us as we dig into a bowl. But just because people of all ages are familiar with Tony the Tiger and Trix the Rabbit doesn’t mean those smiling faces have always looked the same. Because while cereal has long remained a bedrock of the most important meal of the day, their packaging and designs have undergone some dramatic changes over the decades.

Netflix Releases Christopher Guest’s Mascots Trailer

1

Netflix has revealed the trailer for their upcoming film Mascots, from director Christopher Guest (Waiting for Guffman, Best in Show, A Mighty Wind), which will officially debut on the streaming platform on October 13.

Welcome to all the drama, intrigue and occasional excitement of the 8th World Mascot Association Championships, where a group of “unusual” men and women, with big heads and furry suits, compete to win the prestigious gold fluffy award and be crowned best mascot in the world.

The Netflix original film stars Jane Lynch, Parker Posey, Fred Willard, Ed Begley, Jr., Christopher Moynihan, Don Lake, Brad Williams, Zach Woods, Chris O’Dowd, Susan Yeagley, Sarah Baker, Tom Bennett, Kerry Godliman, Bob Balaban, Jennifer Coolidge, Michael Hitchcock, Maria Blasucci, John Michael Higgins, and Jim Piddock. The film was written by Christopher Guest & Jim Piddock and produced by Karen Murphy. Mascots will have its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival this September.

This will be Guest’s first feature film since 2006’s For Your Consideration, which broke the fake documentary formula from his previous efforts with more of a straight narrative story. Guest’s most recent effort was the 2013 HBO comedy series “Family Tree,” which starred Chris O’Dowd and was cancelled after one season.

Christopher Guest’s Mascots Coming To Netflix In 2016

Christopher Guest

Actor, writer and director Christopher Guest is exploring the wild world of direct-to-Netflix movies. Guest’s “Mascots” is set to appear on the streaming video service in 2016.

Netflix made the announcement by way of a flyer spread around on social media this week. Information is scant, but the flyer notes that “Mascots” will premiere “exclusively in 2016” as a Netflix original film.

The flyer reads, “Welcome to all the drama, intrigue and occasional excitement of the 8th World Mascot Association Championships,” where a group of ‘unusual’ men and women, with big heads and furry suits, compete to win the prestigious Gold Fluffy Award and be crowned best mascot in the world.”

Guest is know for pioneering the “mockumentary” format of faux-documentary films through “This is Spinal Tap” (rock ‘n’ roll), “Best in Show” (dog shows), “Waiting for Guffman” (community theater) and “A Mighty Wind” (folk music).

Guest often works with the same actors across multiple films, so there’s a good chance familiar faces in the form of Michael McKean (“This is Spinal Tap,” “Better Call Saul”), Harry Shearer (“This is Spinal Tap,” “The Simpsons”), Eugene Levy (“Best in Show,” “A Mighty Wind”) and Jane Lynch (“A Mighty Wind,” “Glee”) could show up in the cast. We’ll have to wait for the details to be revealed.
