Mattel Announces DOS, The Sequel To The Card Game UNO

Mattel is rolling out a sequel to its popular card game UNO, and it’s being called DOS. After almost half a century of UNO being a mainstay of family game nights, you’ll soon have the option of playing a brand new successor.

DOS works similarly to its predecessor, but with one big twist hinted at by the game’s name. Players still compete using the familiar system of matching numbered and colored cards, but they can now make two piles of cards and can throw down two at a time instead of just one. Also, this time around players win after earning enough points, not by ditching all of their cards like in UNO. But, of course, similar to it’s predecessor, if you’re down to just two cards, you have to enthusiastically shout “DOS,” and if another player calls “DOS” before you do, you have to pick up two cards. New shiny look, same old brutality.

DOS is the first total reinvention of UNO since the original game was first introduced in 1971.

DOS will go on sale for $5.99 exclusively at Target starting March 4, and it’ll be available at more retailers in August.

Mattel To Debut Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice Toys At San Diego Comic Con

Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman are going to loom large at Comic-Con this year and in toy boxes.

The superheroes of the upcoming movie Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (in theaters March 25, 2016) are bound to be a central component of the Warner Bros. movie panel at the San Diego Convention Center’s cavernous Hall H on July 11. Their action figures will also be on display and available for fans to take home as Comic-Con exclusives during the convention that begins next Wednesday.

Mattel is selling a movie-inspired BvS two-pack ($30) with the likeness of Henry Cavill’s Superman and Ben Affleck’s Batman. Each of the 6-inch-tall figures comes with fabric capes, display bases that combine to form the film’s iconic logo, and lights-and-sounds packaging teasing one of the big moments from the upcoming movie.

Fans of the Batfleck’s new Batmobile can also pick up a Hot Wheels edition ($25) of the superhero ride, featuring a die-cast chassis and body, rubber tires and neato machine guns and missile launchers — all encased in limited-edition packaging.

Mattel has a new Barbie line coming in the spring, and at their booth the company is showcasing a doll based on actress Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman from Dawn of Justice. Standing 12 inches tall and featuring a sword, shield, tiara, bulletproof bracelets and her signature lasso of truth, Wonder Woman is part of the Barbie movie collection along with Superman and Batman.

5

And the Mattel booth is slated to display a life-sized Hot Wheels build of a Batman v Superman Twin Mill car designed to celebrate the film. Graphics on the car are inspired from the film suits of both heroes, and a die-cast toy version of the vehicle will be on sale in the spring as part of a movie-inspired Hot Wheels line.

Mattel Teams With Google To Reinvent The View-Master

View-Master_Press_Image_1__150212

Kicking off the Toy Industry Association’s Toy Fair in New York today, Mattel, Inc. unveiled a collaboration with Google that gives the iconic View-Master toy a 21st century twist. With the new View-Master that works with Google Cardboard, Mattel is infusing its expertise in fun and play to develop an immersive digital experience for kids.

Mattel’s new View-Master offers an easy-to-use and affordable platform that will enable users to take engaging field trips where they can explore famous places, landmarks, nature, planets and more in 360 degree ‘photospheres’. By pairing the View-Master’s ‘experience reel’ and app with an Android smartphone, kids will immediately experience an imaginative and interactive learning environment.

“The View-Master was first introduced at the 1939 World’s Fair in New York, giving consumers access to spectacular 3D worlds by simply selecting a reel and looking through a device,” said Doug Wadleigh, SVP and Global Brand General Manager, Toy Box at Mattel. “By working with Google’s Cardboard platform, we are now able to take that experience even further bringing the discovery and immersive viewing experience of the View-Master to the digital age. Combining technology and innovation with this classic toy gives kids an enhanced experience allowing for play opportunities not yet imagined through new, digitally curated content.”

“We developed Google Cardboard as an open platform to inspire companies like Mattel to rethink how to deliver new user experiences through technology,” said Mike Jazayeri, Product Director for Google Cardboard. “Many of us on the Google Cardboard team grew up playing with View-Master, so we were excited to collaborate with Mattel and to see the viewer evolve and work with Google Cardboard.”

Available fall 2015, consumers can purchase the View-Master viewer and a sample experience reel for SRP $29.99. The sample reel (when paired with app and smartphone) provides a glimpse of the full View-Master experience, including a gallery of classic View-Master images, a journey into space with a tour inside a space shuttle, and a chance to explore a unique destination in 360 degrees. Additional experience reel packs will be sold separately at retail for SRP $14.99, and each pack will feature four themed experience reels – with themes such as nature, adventure destinations and science – and each experience reel will be loaded with multiple areas to explore.

To continue to expand offerings on the View-Master platform Mattel will begin to curate and create new experience reels with other Google Cardboard developers to offer users even more unique content to enjoy.

For more information on the View-Master product, and for licensing and developer opportunities on the View-Master platform please visit www.view-master.com.

Mattel Will Finally Release Back To The Future Hoverboard

Back to the Future Hover Board: Finally! This totally awesome 1:1 replica of the hover board from the Back To The Future 2 and Back To The Future 3 films includes multiple whooshing sounds and will glide over most surfaces (does not actually “hover” – check back in 2015 for that feature).

Mattel will be taking orders for it March 1 – March 20, 2012, and the final product will be shipped around November/December 2012. Because this is such a high-cost item, there will be a minimum number of orders required to go into production.

The price will be announced later this month. (Note: Hover board does not work on water.)
