Suntup Editions Reveals Fahrenheit 451 Jacket Cover Art By Michael Whelan

Suntup Editions has some exciting news to share with those who have purchased the Artist Gift edition of Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury, and for those who haven’t there are still a few available for purchase HERE.

You may know artist Michael Whelan from the incredible work he has created for book covers over the past 30+ years. Fans of our Covers Collection will undoubtedly know him for his iconic first edition cover art for Stephen King’s The Gunslinger.

For the Suntup edition of Fahrenheit 451, Whelan spent a long time researching the book. He read the novel several times, looked at as many previous jacket covers as he could find, and then subsequently spent many months  creating this painting.

As part of his study, there was a sentence from the novel which he focused on the most. It was a description of Captain Beatty’s slicker.

“…his massive black slicker flapping out behind, so that he seemed a great black bat flying above the engine…”

He took this as representative of what all the firemen wore because elsewhere the author describes all firemen as looking alike.

This description, along with Whelan’s vision of the firefighter’s military greatcoat as a symbol of dark and unforgiving governmental authority, combine to create what we believe is one of the most stunning covers of this book to date.

The Artist Gift edition of Fahrenheit 451 is $95, and is housed in a printed paper covered slipcase. The edition includes an introduction by Neil Gaiman, six full color illustrations by Julia Griffin, Ray Bradbury’s short story The Pedestrian and his novella The Fireman, which later evolved into Fahrenheit 451, and a 77-page bonus section on the history, context and criticism of the novel edited by Jonathan R. Eller. All copies are signed by Michael Whelan and Julia Griffin.

Suntup Editions Firestarter Covers Collection Print By Michael Whelan

Last month, Suntup Editions introduced their first of two spectacular cover art prints signed by artist Michael Whelan, The Dark Tower: The Gunslinger.

They are now delighted to reveal the Firestarter Limited Edition Cover as the second of their Whelan additions to The Covers Collection.

Published by Phantasia Press in 1980, the same year as the novel’s wide release, the limited edition of Firestarter features Charlie exhibiting her pyrokinesis power at full blast. This gorgeous painting predates the movie version by 4 years. Whelan used his niece Laina as his model, but many fans have commented on the girl’s similarity to Drew Barrymore.  The cover art for this edition so impressed Stephen King at the time that he personally recommended Whelan as the artist for the Donald M. Suntup Editions To Release The Covers Collection – The Dark Tower Print By Michael Whelan

Suntup Editions is very proud to introduce their latest addition to The Covers Collection. The first of two spectacular cover art prints signed by artist Michael Whelan, The Dark Tower: The Gunslinger.

This magnificent cover art graced the first US edition cover of The Dark Tower: The Gunslinger by Stephen King, published by Donald M. Grant in 1982. This is the second piece of artwork Whelan was commissioned to create for King. According to the author’s web site, King was so impressed with Whelan’s work the first time around that he suggested him for The Dark Tower: The Gunslinger, the first book in The Dark Tower series.

Whelan’s cover art depicting Roland and Jake in their escape from the Slow Mutants only appeared on 20,000 copies of the trade hardback — its first and second printings. By the third printing, the cover art was changed. The Dark Tower: The Gunslinger is widely considered to be one of the most sought after books by Stephen King collectors.

This officially licensed print went through several rounds of color corrections with the artist to make sure that it is as close to the original as possible. Now, you can enjoy Michael Whelan’s dazzling artwork presented here without cover text.

These prints are hand-signed by Michael Whelan and limited to just 50 copies per size, worldwide.
