Rocketman Soundtrack To Be Released On May 24

The much-anticipated soundtrack to one of the cinematic events of the year, the Elton John musical fantasy Rocketman, will be released on May 24 by Interscope Records. Rocketman: Music From The Motion Picture features the vocal performances of the film’s star Taron Egerton, and producer-composer Giles Martin reinterpreting Elton’s landmark hits, tailoring the music specifically to complement the movie narrative.

The first track from the album, “Rocket Man,” was Zane Lowe’s World Record today (Wed, May 1st) on Apple Music’s Beats 1. In the film, the track, with its “submerged” intro feel, has Egerton, as Elton, in the depths of a swimming pool, before climaxing at Dodgers Stadium. Fans who pre-order Rocketman: Music From The Motion Picture will receive “Rocket Man” instantly.

“It was so important that the music I composed and recorded had to be sung by Taron,” says Elton John. “I wanted his interpretation of me, through Bernie Taupin’s lyrics and my music — not just acting. I left Taron in the hands of Giles Martin, who I trusted implicitly because he’s brilliant.

“I didn’t want to be in Taron’s shadows, watching over the process, I trusted them to do what they needed to do, artistically, and listening back I’ve been astonished with the results. Getting the music right was the most important thing, as the songs in the film are integral to the story.”

Egerton adds: “The beauty of having Elton involved with the film is that we’ve been able to work with him to see how far we can take these classic songs. Giles Martin has impeccable taste and massive skills to bring the songs to a place where they are faithful and daring as well.”

Observes Martin: ‘The great thing about Elton is that he is a true artist and he wants people to expand on his work — he wants interpretations done, it’s refreshing for him. We had scope to play around with things and think how we address the songs. The songs are the story of the movie, the heartbeat of what happens. Once the songs start a whole world opens up. In Taron I’ve never known a singer who dedicates himself so much to the process. I don’t think anyone else could have played Elton.”

Working closely with the makers of Rocketman, Martin supervised such highlights as the transformation of ‘Saturday Night’s Alright for Fighting’ into an epic ensemble piece, and turning ‘I Want Love’ into a moment of heartbreaking conflict around young Reg Dwight’s family meal. The soundtrack also features a brand new John-Taupin composition, ‘(I’m Gonna) Love Me Again,’ performed by Elton and Taron Egerton. This is co-produced by Martin and Greg Kurstin, with Martin handling all other production; the album was recorded between 2017 and 2019 at Abbey Road Studios and AIR Studios in London. The executive album producers are Elton John, David Furnish, Matthew Vaughn and Dexter Fletcher.

The Queen + Adam Lambert Story To Air On ABC April 29

The two-hour documentary “The Show Must Go On: The Queen + Adam Lambert Story” airs Monday, April 29, on ABC. On the heels of Queen and Adam Lambert’s show-stopping opening performance at the Oscars on Sunday, Feb. 24, Lincoln Square Productions has acquired the U.S. television rights to a documentary from Miracle Productions on the iconic band and their new regular frontman, Adam Lambert. Produced by Jim Beach and acclaimed writer and filmmaker Simon Lupton, “The Show Must Go On: The Queen + Adam Lambert Story” airs Monday, April 29 (8:00–10:00 p.m. EDT), on The ABC Television Network, prior to Queen and Lambert’s already sold-out July/August 2019 U.S. Rhapsody tour.

With rare concert footage and exclusive, revealing portraits of the band members offstage, “The Show Must Go On” chronicles Queen and Lambert’s incredible journey since they first shared the stage together on “American Idol” in 2009. From his humble beginnings and meteoric rise on reality TV to now standing center stage as lead singer of Queen + Adam Lambert, the documentary features brand-new interviews with Lambert, his parents Leila and Eber, and Queen founding members Brian May and Roger Taylor, as well as Golden Globe® and Oscar® winner for Best Actor “Bohemian Rhapsody”‘s Rami Malek, and Foo Fighters’ Taylor Hawkins.

Queen remain vanguards of rock in the 21st century. They scored their first No. 1 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1980 and soared through that decade performing in stadiums, including their landmark 1985 performance at Live Aid which was seen by 3 billion people worldwide. Freddie Mercury died of AIDS in 1991, and a star-studded tribute concert the following year was thought to be the conclusion of Queen live.

“The Show Must Go On” simultaneously follows the ensuing 27 years. Lambert, starting at the age of 10, is beginning to come of age, discovers his love of music and finds a voice of his own while, across the pond, the surviving members of Queen see their songs remain staples with DJs, in clubs, in theatres around the globe with their hit musical, “We Will Rock You,” and in movies. Lambert and Queen intersected in spectacular fashion when Lambert first performs with the band, singing “We Are the Champions” as one of only two finalists on Season 8 of “American Idol.” The public reaction was remarkable and first seeded the idea that perhaps Lambert might become a permanent fixture in the Queen family. In 2012, Queen + Adam Lambert was born. To date, Queen + Adam Lambert have performed together in nearly 200 sold-out shows in arenas and stadiums across the world.

Prince Estate to Release 15-Track ‘Originals’ Album

On Prince’s birthday, June 7, the late artist’s estate, in partnership with Warner Bros. Records and Tidal, will release “Originals,” a 15-track album featuring 14 previously unreleased recordings by Prince of such songs. The tracks were selected collaboratively by Troy Carter, on behalf of The Prince Estate, and Jay-Z.

Starting June 7, “Originals” will stream exclusively on Tidal for 14 days.

On June 21, Warner Bros. will release the recordings, sourced directly from Prince’s archive of “Vault” recordings, via all download and streaming partners and physically on CD, while 180 gram 2LP and limited edition Deluxe CD+2LP formats will follow on July 19th.

Prince was a monumentally prolific artist and by the mid-1980s, in addition to releasing nine of his most commercially successful albums, he also wrote and recorded many dozens of songs for proteges The Time, Vanity 6, Sheila E., Apollonia 6, Jill Jones, the Family, and Mazarati. Often, Prince’s original demo recordings would be used as master takes on their albums, with only minor alterations to the instrumentation and a replacement of the vocal tracks. Other times, artists would rely on his demos to guide them through their own recording process, with Prince’s initial take informing their final version of his song.

“Originals” reveals the origins of these songs — many of which were substantial hits — along with deeper album cuts such as Vanity 6’s “Make-Up,” Jill Jones’s “Baby, You’re a Trip,” and Kenny Rogers’ “You’re My Love.” The only previously released song is Prince’s original 1984 version of “Nothing Compares 2 U,” which was released in 2018 as a standalone single (and as a stellar live duet with Rosie Gaines in 1993). The song was originally released in 1985 by The Family, and made into an unforgettable No. 1 single by Sinead O’Connor five years later.

Prince Memoir The Beautiful Ones Coming This Fall

From Prince himself comes the brilliant coming-of-age-and-into-superstardom story of one of the greatest artists of all time—featuring never-before-seen photos, original scrapbooks and lyric sheets, and the exquisite memoir he began writing before his tragic death.

Prince was a musical genius, one of the most talented, beloved, accomplished, popular, and acclaimed musicians in history. He was also a startlingly original visionary with an imagination deep enough to whip up whole worlds, from the sexy, gritty funk paradise of “Uptown” to the mythical landscape of Purple Rain to the psychedelia of “Paisley Park.” But his most ambitious creative act was turning Prince Rogers Nelson, born in Minnesota, into Prince, the greatest pop star of his era.

The Beautiful Ones is the story of how Prince became Prince—a first-person account of a kid absorbing the world around him and then creating a persona, an artistic vision, and a life, before the hits and fame that would come to define him. The book is told in four parts. The first is composed of the memoir he was writing before his tragic death, pages that brings us into Prince’s childhood world through his own lyrical prose. The second part takes us into Prince’s early years as a musician, before his first album released, through a scrapbook of Prince’s writing and photos. The third section shows us Prince’s evolution through candid images that take us up to the cusp of his greatest achievement, which we see in the book’s fourth section: his original handwritten treatment for Purple Rain—the final stage in Prince’s self-creation, as he retells the autobiography we’ve seen in the first three parts as a heroic journey.

The book is framed by editor Dan Piepenbring’s riveting and moving introduction about his short but profound collaboration with Prince in his final months—a time when Prince was thinking deeply about how to reveal more of himself and his ideas to the world, while retaining the mystery and mystique he’d so carefully cultivated—and annotations that provide context to each of the book’s images.

This work is not just a tribute to Prince, but an original and energizing literary work, full of Prince’s ideas and vision, his voice and image, his undying gift to the world.

The 288 page hardcover will be published on October 29, 2019 and you can pre-order the book HERE.

Sting Revisits, Reimagines Police, Solo Hits on ‘My Songs’ Collection

Sting has always prided himself as an artist constantly looking forward. But on his next album he looks back — in order to bring his music forward.

My Songs, due out May 24, finds Sting revisiting 15 of his Police and solo favorites, revising and reimagining them to varying degrees – but in almost all cases updating sonics, dynamics and arrangements based on the way the songs have evolved for him over the years.

My Songs, recorded in various locations, makes use of both existing and newly recorded tracks, with members of Sting’s touring band (guitarist Dominic Miller and his son Rufus, drummer Josh Freese) and of the Last Bandoleros and Sting’s manager Martin Kierszenbaum – who also produced tracks with Dave Aude and Jerry Fuentes – joining Sting on the latter.

The Police’s “So Lonely,” for instance, has a slightly twangier guitar tone and an end vamp that draws from live performances of the song both with the band and on his own. The orchestrations on “Desert Rose” are a bit more up front, while “Message in a Bottle” features an extended outro that builds to a powerful vocal crescendo, and “Walking on the Moon” ends with a more pronounced call-and-response arrangement. His refreshed take of “Shape of My Heart,” meanwhile, is included as a nod to Juice WRLD’s sampling it for his hit “Lucid Dreams.” And of particular note is “If You Love Somebody Set Them Free,” a bold, banging 4×4 take that makes the jazz-pop original sound like a timid puppy trying to keep up with a wolf pack.

The My Songs project was inspired by an invitation to perform “Brand New Day” – which Sting wrote for the millennium – in Times Square this past New Year’s Eve. “It’s a hopeful song about turning over a new leaf and starting again,” Sting says, “so we did an updated version of that, again, taking off some filters and using a different bass drum sound, and it just sounded very contemporary and it ended up on Spotify, next to Ariana Grande. So I thought, ‘Yeah, that works. Let’s keep doing that.’ So we worked on ‘Desert Rose’ and sent it to the record company and said, ‘We think it’s a hit again.’ We’re just having fun, which is good. If it wasn’t fun, I couldn’t do it.”

The track list for My Songs includes:

1. Brand New Day
2. Desert Rose
3. If You Love Somebody Set Them Free
4. Every Breath You Take
5. Demolition Man
6. Can’t Stand Losing You
7. Fields of Gold
8. So Lonely
9. Shape of My Heart
10. Message in a Bottle
11. Fragile
12. Walking on the Moon
13. Englishman in New York
14. If I Ever Lose My Faith in You=
15. Roxanne” (Live)

17. Next To You (Live)
18. Spirits In The Material World (Live)
19. Fragile (Live)
