An Oral History of David S. Pumpkins, Any Questions?

“Haunted Elevator” is a Saturday Night Live sketch about confused people trying to figure out what this guy named David S. Pumpkins’s deal is. The now-classic sketch (more commonly referred to as “David Pumpkins”), starring Tom Hanks as Mr. Pumpkins, was written by similarly confused people trying to figure out what his deal is. The character — his signature wardrobe, orange hair-streak, hand motions, voice, name — became clearer with each step in the SNL process.

Exactly one year from the debut of “Haunted Elevator,” and a week away from a new David Pumpkins Halloween special, this is the story of how it came together, told by those who wrote it — Bobby Moynihan, Mikey Day, and Streeter Seidell.

Tom Hanks To Star In David S. Pumpkins Halloween Special For NBC

Tom Hanks will reprise the role of David S. Pumpkins from “SNL” in a new animated Halloween special, NBC announced Thursday.

“The David S. Pumpkins Halloween Special” is based on the viral “Haunted Elevator” sketch from the Oct. 22, 2016 “SNL” telecast that featured Hanks as mystery man David S. Pumpkins, on an elevator wearing a pumpkin suit and surrounded by two skeleton dancers, played by Mikey Day and Bobby Moynihan.

“Game of Thrones” star Peter Dinklage will also lend his voice to the special. Sketch creators Day, Moynihan and Streeter Seidell will have voiceover roles as well. Set in a small suburban town on All Hallows’ Eve, the special centers on David Pumpkins and his skeleton sidekicks who show a young boy and his sister the true meaning of Halloween, answering none of their questions along the way. The half-hour special will air on Saturday, Oct. 28 at 11:30 p.m. ET/PT.

“It’s scary how quickly the original ‘SNL’ sketch caught on, and we’re thrilled that Tom Hanks is back to keep the fun going,” said George Cheeks, president of business operations and late night programming for NBC Entertainment and Universal Television.

Ben & Jerry’s Launches Two Saturday Night Live Themed Flavors: Lazy Sunday & Gilly’s Catastrophic Crunch

ben-jerry-s

Today ice cream purveyor Ben & Jerry’s launched two new flavors inspired by sketches from Saturday Night Live. They’re being made in honor of the show’s 40th anniversary this year. Ben & Jerry’s will also debut two more SNL-themed flavors later this year.

The first new ice cream is called Lazy Sunday, based on the famous sketch with Andy Samberg and Chris Parnel. In “Lazy Sunday,” Samberg and Parnell wax poetic about their love of cupcakes — Magnolia cupcakes, to be specific. Fittingly, Ben & Jerry’s new flavor contains a vanilla cake batter ice cream base with chocolate and yellow cupcake pieces and a chocolate frosting swirl.

The second new flavor Ben & Jerry’s is debuting is called Gilly’s Catastrophic Crunch. Based on Kristen Wiig’s silly SNL character, the flavor contains a combination of chocolate and sweet cream ice creams, with caramel clusters, fudge-covered almonds and a marshmallow swirl.

As of today, June 19th, both new flavors are available at scoop shops across the U.S. and Canada.
