Spoke Art Announces On A Mission From God, The Debut Solo Show of Max Dalton Opening On April 4, 2015

Show Flyer

Spoke Art is pleased to present, “On a Mission From God,” the debut solo show of acclaimed illustrator, Max Dalton. Currently living in Buenos Aries, Argentina, Dalton has been one of Spoke Art’s most popular artists since he began exhibiting with the gallery in 2010 . Working as an illustrator and graphic artist, Dalton’s passions lie within the wonderful world of popular culture. From comics to animation, Max has honed his distinct illustrative style over the past twenty years and culminated an impressive body of work that has become “On a Mission From God.”

For his solo, Dalton has created a wide range of limited edition prints and collectibles. A large portion of the show is comprised of his “Greatest Moments in Film” series which encapsulates over 40 iconic scenes from some of the most highly celebrated films of the past millennium. Featuring the lead actor(s) center stage, below their most famous quote, each character and scene is presented in a unique script-style format.

Alongside the “Greatest Moments in Film” is a new body of work comprising of larger limited edition prints that Max has created exclusively for the exhibit. Whilst the smaller Daltons revel in their simplicity, these larger posters celebrate the complicated layers of thematic symbology through different movies and television shows. Covering both the classics and the contemporaries, Dalton has reached into the deep abyss of his poindexterish mind to include everything from the most notable quotes in Seinfeld to the most famous couples in cinematic history. The elaborate imagery of Dalton’s constructed world creates a kind of cognitive game for the viewer, a sort of eye-spy for pop-culture iconography.

In addition to this massive new series of prints, Dalton has also created a few limited edition toys and collectibles. Designed for the inner child in all of us, highlights include custom made Viewmasters (View-Max-sters), a fully playable Groundhog Day board game, and a Bill Murray fridge magnet set.

Please join us Saturday, April 4th from 6-10pm for the opening reception of “On a Mission From God”. Complimentary beverages will be served and the artist will be in attendance.

As an added bonus, the first 50 attendees of the exhibition will receive a free mini print, singed and numbered by Max himself, and Max will be in attendance to sign older prints for fans as well.

Spoke Art Announces Kubrick – An Art Show Tribute Opening On September 6, 2014

15010669492_366f4c4a57_b

Spoke Art is proud to present: Kubrick – An art show tribute to the films of Stanley Kubrick. Over 60 artists were invited to re-imagine their favorite characters, scenes and thematic concepts from one of the world’s most prolific directors. Spanning a plethora of mediums from sculpture and painting to limited edition prints, the show seeks to honor one of the 20th century’s most significant directors while also reinterpreting his impact in a contemporary context.

Widely known for his controversial techniques and highly controlled directorial style, Kubrick has fabricated a diverse repertoire of films and imagined worlds for his viewers. One of the great idiosyncratic masterminds in history’s cinema, Kubrick has cultivated a noteworthy genre completely his own. Critical discussions of humanity, morality and social justice all appear in his work regularly.

Contextually disparate but psychologically banded, all of Kubrick’s films challenge the viewer both intellectually and ethically. A true auteur, Kubrick’s work pushes our understanding of human nature to severe place. Extreme violence, salaciousness and deranged psychological behavior are commonplace motifs instrumented to establish Kubrick’s pessimistic undertones. Even through satire, Kubrick manages to take levity to a place of lunatic proportion.

All the artists were allowed to select the film of their choosing, there were no guidelines on subject matter or content. Each artist was given free reign to re-interpret and render their take on Kubrick’s entire cinematic collection. Resulting in a variegated display, KUBRICK is an experiment in modernity, a cross-section between film and art.

Participating Artists include Aaron Jasinski, Adam Maida, Akira Beard, Alex Kirzhener, Anarkitty, Audrey Pongracz, Bartosz Kosowski, Brian Ewing, Brian Methe, Bruce White, Chris Skinner, Christine Aria Hostetler, Crowded Teeth, Cuddly Rigor Mortis , Cuyler Smith, Dave MacDowell, David Moscati, Doug LaRocca, Eiko Ojala, Fernando Reza, Gene Guynn, Geoff Trapp, Glen Brogan, Guillaume Morellec, Irma Rivera, Ivonna Buenrostro, Jayde Fish, Jen Mann, Jesse Riggle, Jessica Deahl, Johannah O’Donnell, John Wentz, Jon Wayshack, Joshua Budich, Justin, VanGenderen, Kate Zambrano, Kate Copeland, Kiersten Essenpreis, Mandy Tsung, Matt Dye, Meghan Stratman , Michael Ramstead, Epyon 5, Nan Lawson , New Flesh, Nicole Gustafsson, Oliver Barrett, Rhys Cooper, Robert Wilson, Sam Gilbey, Sam Ho, Sam Smith, Sandi Calistro, Sarah Joncas, Steve Yamane, Thomas Walker, Tim Maclean, Tim Jordan, Tim Doyle, Tracie Ching, Van Orton Design, Veronica Fish and Vincent Aseo.

Kubrick – An art show tribute to the films of Stanley Kubrick will open on September 6, 2014 and run until September 27th 2014. Spoke Art is located at 816 Sutter St. San Francisco, CA 94109.

Spoke Art Announces Quentin vs. Coen Art Show Opening On July 5, 2014

quentin-vs-coen-flyer_640x

Spoke Art is proud to present: Quentin vs. Coen – An art show tribute to the films of Tarantino and the Coen Brothers. Over 60 artists were invited to reinterpret their favorite scenes, characters and films from the prolific directors, resulting in an eclectic showing of inspirational fine art. Showcasing a plethora of original works from painting and sculpture to limited edition screen prints and digital works, Quentin vs Coen demonstrates a wide range of mediums and practices.

Playing upon the already highly stylized vision of these directors, Quentin vs Coen pays homage and re-imagines these momentous post-modern genre makers. Although Tarantino and the Coen brothers differ heavily in their directorial styles, artistically they both have an aptitude for overlapping themes. Both gravitate towards potent, film-defining soundtracks, both fabricate their own versions of neo-noir dark humor. Their penchant for ample brutal violence and bizarre story lines compliment their overarching topics of American culture, revenge and fate as well as classic hollywood narratives.

For this exhibition, no guidelines on subject matter or content were given to the artists. This artistic liberty allows for a boundless selection of personal depictions and interpretations. Each artist was allowed to choose their favorite character, scene or location from whatever movie they liked. Quentin vs Coen therefore offers an eclectic selection of works both diverse in style as well as subject.

Quentin vs Coen will debut on Saturday, July 5th, from 6pm – 10pm. There is no cover charge, complimentary beverages will be served and some artists will be in attendance.

The exhibition will be on view until July 26th. Online sales begin Tuesday, July 8th via the Spoke Art website.

Participating artists include: Sherif Adel, Derek Ballard, Oliver Barrett, Joshua Budich, Sandi Calistro, Tracie Ching, Dan Christofferson, Craig Church, Ben Clarke, Nick Comparone, Tim Doyle, Matt Dye, Jason Edmiston, Anarkitty, Veronica Fish, Sam Gilbey, Ian Glaubinger, Gene Guynn, Sam Ho, Christine Hostetler, Primary Hughes, Tim Jordan, Alex Kirzhener, Cuddly Rigor Mortis, Doug LaRocca, Nan Lawson, Tula Lotay, Steve MacDonald, Dave MacDowell, Tim Maclean, Adam Maida, Crowded Teeth, Scott Mitchell, David Moscati, Joemur, Johannah O’Donnell, Rich Pellegrino, Joel Daniel Phillips, Michael Ramstead, Fernando Reza, Jesse Riggle, Jermaine Rogers, Cuyler Smith, Peter Strain, Meghan Stratman, Maria Suarez-Inclan, Geoff Trapp, Justin VanGenderen, John Wentz, Bruce White, Bec Winnel and Kate Zambrano.

Tim Doyle’s “UnReal Estate III” To Open At Spoke Art On February 6, 2014

Spoke Art is proud to welcome back represented artist Tim Doyle for his third solo exhibition with the gallery and the latest installment in his ongoing “UnReal Estate” series.

Inspired by the popular culture landscape, quite literally, Doyle re-interprets the iconic settings found in contemporary cult television. These places, though fictional, have become a part of the universal psyche, ingrained in the minds of cartoon and serialized television fans worldwide.

The prevalence in contemporary culture of this medium, especially with the excesses of the internet, have transformed fictional characters and scenes into something so close to tangible that they’re immediately recognizable even when viewed through an alternate lens.

The artist begins first with a graphite drawing on board, which is scanned and colored digitally. From there, Doyle hand prints a run of limited edition serigraphs (screen prints) which he creates entirely in-house. As an artist known not just for his illustrative talents but also as a craftsman, Doyle’s screen prints often utilize masterful techniques such as split fountains and glow in the dark inks.

Since it’s debut in 2011, the “UnReal Estate” series has been a massive success, with both back to back shows selling out in full. For the third installment in the ongoing survey, Doyle has created all new interpretations of locations from both classic and contemporary television, revisiting popular shows and breaking new ground with more topical and current series.

Limited edition prints will be available first to attendees of the February 6th opening reception, with remaining copies available online starting Friday, February 7th.

This exhibition will be on view until February 22nd.
