Check Out Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story Photos

20th Century Studios has revealed stunning new photos from director Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story remake.

“This story is not only a product of its time, but that time has returned, and it’s returned with a kind of social fury,” Spielberg said. “I really wanted to tell that Puerto Rican, Nuyorican experience of basically the migration to this country and the struggle to make a living, and to have children, and to battle against the obstacles of xenophobia and racial prejudice.”

Ansel Elgort and Rachel Zegler star in the film alongside Ariana DeBose, Ana Isabelle, Corey Stoll, Brian d’Arcy James, Curtiss Cook and Academy Award-winner Rita Moreno, who plays Valentina and also serves as one of the film’s Executive Producers.

West Side Story is produced and directed by Steven Spielberg from a script by Academy Award-nominated screenwriter and Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Tony Kushner. The film has been adapted for the screen from the original 1957 Broadway musical, which was written by Arthur Laurents with music by Leonard Bernstein, lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and concept, direction and choreography by Jerome Robbins. Tony Award-winner Justin Peck will choreograph the musical numbers in the film. Also leading the production are Tony Award-winning producer Kevin McCollum and Academy Award-nominated producer Kristie Macosko Krieger.

The film’s music team includes renowned conductor Gustavo Dudamel, who will helm the recording of Bernstein’s iconic score; Academy Award-nominated composer and conductor David Newman (Anastasia) who will be arranging the score for the new adaptation; Tony Award-winning composer Jeanine Tesori (Broadway’s Fun Home and Thoroughly Modern Millie), who will be working with the cast on vocals; and Grammy-nominated music supervisor Matt Sullivan (Beauty and the Beast, Chicago), who will serve as executive music producer for the film.

West Side Story will be released by The Walt Disney Studios in the US on December 18.

Steven Spielberg Departs Indiana Jones 5; James Mangold In Talks To Direct

After years of time in development hell and Harrison Ford revealing a potential production start date in two months, Indiana Jones 5 has seen a surprise development as longtime franchise helmer Steven Spielberg has exited the project, with Lucasfilm currently in negotiations with James Mangold (Ford v. Ferrari) to take over.

The 73-year-old Oscar-winning director is still set to remain on the project as a hands-on producer and source are reporting that the decision to leave came from Spielberg, who wanted to pass along the titular hero’s story to a new generation of storytellers with a fresh perspective on the classic adventurer.

The film was originally announced in 2016 with Spielberg and Ford returning in their respective roles and an original theatrical release date set for July 19, 2019, but was constantly pushed back after multiple rewrites came from Jonathan Kasdan, son of Raiders of the Lost Ark writer Lawrence after original writer David Koepp exited the project.

Mangold is no stranger to big-budget action, having helmed the Tom Cruise-starring Knight and Day, as well as the final two installments in the solo Wolverine series The Wolverine and Logan, the latter of which grossed over $619 million at the global box office and was nominated for an Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay. He recently directed the racing biopic Ford v. Ferrari starring Christian Bale (Vice) and Matt Damon (The Departed), which was nominated for four Oscars.

Famed archaeologist and explorer Indiana Jones was introduced in 1981’s Raiders of the Lost Ark – one of AFI’s 100 Greatest American Films of All Time – and later thrilled audiences in 1984’s Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, 1989’s Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, and 2008’s Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. The four films have brought in nearly $2 billion at the global box office.

Steven Spielberg To Make DC Comics Movie Blackhawk

Steven Spielberg is going to make a DC Comics movie.

Hot of the success of Ready Player One, the Oscar-winning hitmaker is reuniting with Warner Bros. to produce and very possibly direct the action-adventure film Blackhawk.

Based on the 1941 comic of the same name, Blackhawk centers on a team of World War II fighter pilots who are led by a mysterious man known as Blackhawk and face down fantastical threats. The screenplay is being written by Spielberg’s frequent collaborator David Koepp (Jurassic Park, War f the Worlds).

Spielberg previously made a comic book adaption of a very different sort with 2011’s The Adventures of Tintin. Blackhawk combines a rather new element for Spielberg (a DC-inspired title) with one of his most frequent topics (World War II, which has been the subject or backdrop of five of his previously directed films).

“It was wonderful working with the team at Warner Bros. to bring Ready Player One to the screen,” Spielberg said in a statement. “They bring a blend of passion and professionalism to everything they do and have a tremendous history in this genre. I am excited to reunite with them on Blackhawk.”

Added Toby Emmerich, chairman of Warner Bros. Pictures Group: “We are so proud to be the studio behind Steven Spielberg’s latest hit, and are thrilled to be working with him again on this new action adventure. We can’t wait to see what new ground he will break in introducing Blackhawk to movie audiences worldwide.”

Warner Bros. notes that the project will mark the filmmaker’s first feature centered around characters from DC Comics. Spielberg will produce the film with Kristie Macosko Krieger and Sue Kroll. Warner Bros. adds that Spielberg is signed on “with an eye toward” directing.

Ready Player One Book Sequel In The Works

In the wake of Warner Bros. Pictures releasing the second trailer for Steven Spielberg’s upcoming ’80s nostalgia odyssey Ready Player One, author Ernest Cline has confirmed during a trailer launch event that he is writing a Ready Player One book sequel with Steven Spielberg’s input! Those that have read the first book know that while that story gets tied up nicely, there’s certainly more directions Cline can go with the characters.

“It is true,” Cline confirmed of the sequel. “I can’t talk about it too much, but I can tell you there’s no better inspiration for a writer returning to a world they’ve already worked on when they’re seeing Steven Spielberg bringing that world to life. To get to talk to him and get his input, one of the greatest storytellers of all-time, and a storyteller that had a direct influence on my first novel, ‘Ready Player One.’ Wade carries a grail diary through the whole story to collect his clues about the Easter Egg hunt, and that’s because of ‘Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.’ It would have been a different story if I had not grown up watching Steven’s movies. So to get to not only collaborate with him to bring the first story to life but to bounce ideas off of him for the sequel is the most gratifying thing that’s ever happened to me in my life.”

Ready Player One stars Tye Sheridan, Olivia Cooke, Mark Rylance, Simon Pegg, T.J. Miller, Hannah John-Kamen and Ben Mendelsohn.

The film is set in 2045, with the world on the brink of chaos and collapse. But the people have found salvation in the OASIS, an expansive virtual reality universe created by the brilliant and eccentric James Halliday (Mark Rylance). When Halliday dies, he leaves his immense fortune to the first person to find a digital Easter egg he has hidden somewhere in the OASIS, sparking a contest that grips the entire world. When an unlikely young hero named Wade Watts (Tye Sheridan) decides to join the contest, he is hurled into a breakneck, reality-bending treasure hunt through a fantastical universe of mystery, discovery and danger..

A Warner Bros. Pictures, Village Roadshow Pictures and DreamWorks Pictures production, the Ready Player One movie is being directed by Spielberg, who is also producing alongside Donald De Line, under his De Line Pictures banner, Dan Farah and Kristie Macosko Krieger. Bruce Berman will serve as executive producer. Based on Ernest Cline’s novel, the screenplay is by Cline, Zak Penn and Eric Eason. Alan Silvestri (Back to the Future trilogy) will compose the music.

Ready Player One gets its game on when it opens on March 30, 2018.
