A fine copy of 1938’s Action Comics #1, featuring the first appearance of Superman, sold at auction Thursday for $956,000, exceeding expectations.
Graded 5.5 out of 10 by the Certified Guarantee Company, the comic is described by Heritage Auctions as having cream to off-white pages, rust-free staples and a brightly colored cover. However, there’s a 1.5-inch spine split at the bottom, which likely prevented the copy from receiving a higher grade. Still, it was expected to sell for “only” about $750,000.
“Having seen many ‘Action’ #1’s over the years, I am deeply impressed with this copy’s eye appeal,” Matt Nelson, CGC’s primary grader, said in a statement. “The book presents as a considerably higher grade than 5.5, lacking the usual fading, staining or creasing commonly seen on mid-grade copies. White and bright, this ‘Action #1 is one of the best looking among the remarkably rare pool of unrestored copies in the world.”
Of course, $956,000 is nowhere near a record price. The finest known copy of Action Comics #1 (9.0 CGC) sold in 2014 on eBay for $3.2 million, rocketing past the previous record of $2.16 million paid in 2011 for a copy once owned by actor Nicolas Cage.
According to Heritage, this copy came from the collection of an East Coast comic book fan who had purchased it in the 1990s for $26,000. Neither the seller nor the buyer wished to be identified.
About 100 copies of Action Comics #1 are known to exist. Of those, only about 30 are unrestored.
The CW and DC Entertainment have released the first official look at Tyler Hoechlin as Superman in the upcoming second season of Supergirl!
“Greg [Berlanti] and I have wanted to work with Tyler for ages, so this worked out perfectly because Tyler is Superman,” Supergirl Executive Producer Andrew Kreisberg previously said. “We are so thrilled and humbled to add another amazing actor to the legacy of this iconic character.”
The character previously maintained a presence on the series by keeping up an online correspondence with Kara and even appearing in the opening credits of the show. In addition, a young version of Kal El appeared when Kara was infected by the Black Mercy.
Melissa Benoist leads the cast of Supergirl as the title character alongside Mehcad Brooks as James Olsen, Laura Benanti as Alura Zor-El, Calista Flockhart as Cat Grant, Chyler Leigh as Alexandra “Alex” Danvers, Jeremy Jordan as Winslow “Winn” Schott, Jenna Dewan Tatum as Lucy Lane (sister of Lois), David Harewood as Hank Henshaw, Peter Facinelli as Maxwell Lord, with Dean Cain and Helen Slater. Supergirl season two is also adding recurring roles for Lynda Carter as the President of the United States, Floriana Lima as Maggie Sawyer and Tyler Hoechlin as Superman.
Supergirl airs at 8/7c p.m. Mondays on The CW. The second season premieres on October 10th.
Dark Hall Mansion is pleased to reveal its latest officially licensed limited edition print release in partnership with Warner Bros. Consumer Products on behalf of DC Entertainment, 1978’s, “Superman” by contemporary artist Matt Ferguson and available this Friday, May 13th!
Dark Hall Mansion will release Matt Ferguson’s classically styled and dynamic limited edition print for one of his favorite films, 1978’s “Superman.” Matt was quite keen from the start as to exactly how he envisioned his Superman piece and precisely what scene he wished to render. Matt’s artwork captures not only a key moment within the film itself but one that encompasses several classic Superman fan elements that have shaped the man of steel’s legacy since its first incarnation in 1933. Matt’s sharp blue-hued Standard edition “Superman” print is elegantly bordered with Art Deco stylings that harken to film elements while powerfully framing the central imagery as Superman comes to the rescue of his beloved Lois Lane, along with more than just a few ill placed citizens down below. Matt’s Variant “Superman” print is a heavy contrast piece with vintage overtones that gracefully counterpoints his Standard edition. The striking “Superman” foil editions perfectly compliment the Man of Steel’s thematic and creates an arresting print with the foil substrate heavily revealing itself in various areas of DHM’s most select edition.
All officially licensed Dark Hall Mansion limited edition “Superman” prints go on sale this Friday, May 13th, at 12:30 PM PST on the dedicated store page here: http://www.darkhallmansionstore.com

French Paper Art Club and Geek-Art are proud to release this gorgeous screenprint officially licenced through DC Comics. Michael Cho knocked it out of the park with his vintage take on The Man of Steel.
Available tomorrow (Wednesday February 24, 2016) on French Paper Art Club.
Michael Cho shared this about the print:“I’ve always liked that old tagline about Superman – that he stood for ‘Truth, Justice and the American Way’. I like positive, optimistic super-heroes and Superman is just about the best example of that, so I was trying to present that attitude in this painting.”

Warner Bros. Pictures has now revealed the first photo of the Man of Steel star Henry Cavill as Superman in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.
Director Zack Snyder shared that adding DC Comics characters such as Batman (Ben Affleck), Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot) and Cyborg (Ray Fisher) makes the movie “thicker, denser and more epic” than Man of Steel and allows it to be the next step toward building a strong movie universe that will ultimately lead to Snyder’s Justice League.
Dawn of Justice’ continues to immerse Superman on Earth by working at the Daily Planet as Clark Kent along with Lois Lane (Amy Adams) and Perry White (Laurence Fishburne). But it also takes him to new environments such as Gotham City and introduces larger threats, including Lex Luthor (Jesse Eisenberg). The debuting heroes Superman meets will affect his perspective on Earth and on the ones he loves, and Snyder feels his convictions will be drawn into question as well. As far as Affleck’s Batman, Snyder said to expect an older, road-weary take on the Dark Knight. “It’s cooler to see a crusty old Batman beating the snot out of guys,” he said. Snyder also explained the ‘v’ in the title instead of the traditional ‘vs.’ They did it “to keep it from being a straight ‘versus’ movie, even in the most subtle way.” Snyder added that he has yet to film any scenes with Gadot as the Amazonian princess. “She’s working out and getting buff and ripped.” Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is scheduled to hit theaters on May 6, 2016.
