Tom Hanks Becomes Mister Rogers In New Featurette

Sony Pictures has released a brand new featurette for their upcoming biopic drama A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood, highlighting Tom Hanks’ incredible transformation into Mister Rogers and how much preparation the Oscar-winning actor went through in order to give an authentic portrayal of the legendary TV personality.

Tom Hanks To Star As Mr. Rogers In New Biopic

TriStar Pictures has announced they have acquired worldwide rights to You Are My Friend, a biopic of children’s television pioneer Fred Rogers with Academy Award winner Tom Hanks set to star.

The project hails from Big Beach (Little Miss Sunshine, Loving) with Marielle Heller (Diary of a Teenage Girl) set to direct from a screenplay by Micah Fitzerman-Blue & Noah Harpster (Transparent, Beautiful Ruins). Marc Turtletaub and Peter Saraf of Big Beach will produce alongside Youree Henley (The Beguiled, 20th Century Woman). Leah Holzer of Big Beach will executive produce, along with Fitzerman-Blue and Harpster. The project originated from a true story developed by Fitzerman-Blue and Harpster, first appearing on the Black List in 2013.

You Are My Friend is inspired by a real-life friendship between Fred Rogers and award-winning journalist Tom Junod. In the heart-warming story, a cynical journalist begrudgingly accepts an assignment to write a profile piece on the beloved icon and finds his perspective on life transformed.

“This is the perfect alchemy of talent coming together at the perfect time to remind us all of the transformative power of kindness and respect to heal and to unite. We are proud to partner with Marielle, Tom and everyone at Big Beach to bring this inspirational true story to audiences all over the world,” said Hannah Minghella, President of TriStar Pictures.

Turtletaub and Saraf said, “Now more than ever, we all need a re-introduction to Fred Rogers’ message of uncompromising love and kindness between all living things. Mari Heller is the perfect visionary filmmaker to bring Noah and Micah’s script to life and because of her vision and this remarkable script, we have the quintessential actor to play Fred Rogers. ”

Director Marielle Heller said, “I’m thrilled to be making You Are My Friend. The script knocked me out with its message of kindness and its exploration of the human spirit. As a mother, I am so inspired by the teachings of Fred Rogers and as a human I am in awe of his life’s work. I can’t wait to bring his story to the public and be a part of such a thoughtful, smart group of people who are all coming together to make this film, which truly feels to me like an antidote to our very fractured culture.”

Hannah Minghella and Shary Shirazi will oversee the project for TriStar Pictures. Production is set to begin in the fall.

An Oral History of David S. Pumpkins, Any Questions?

“Haunted Elevator” is a Saturday Night Live sketch about confused people trying to figure out what this guy named David S. Pumpkins’s deal is. The now-classic sketch (more commonly referred to as “David Pumpkins”), starring Tom Hanks as Mr. Pumpkins, was written by similarly confused people trying to figure out what his deal is. The character — his signature wardrobe, orange hair-streak, hand motions, voice, name — became clearer with each step in the SNL process.

Exactly one year from the debut of “Haunted Elevator,” and a week away from a new David Pumpkins Halloween special, this is the story of how it came together, told by those who wrote it — Bobby Moynihan, Mikey Day, and Streeter Seidell.

Tom Hanks To Star In David S. Pumpkins Halloween Special For NBC

Tom Hanks will reprise the role of David S. Pumpkins from “SNL” in a new animated Halloween special, NBC announced Thursday.

“The David S. Pumpkins Halloween Special” is based on the viral “Haunted Elevator” sketch from the Oct. 22, 2016 “SNL” telecast that featured Hanks as mystery man David S. Pumpkins, on an elevator wearing a pumpkin suit and surrounded by two skeleton dancers, played by Mikey Day and Bobby Moynihan.

“Game of Thrones” star Peter Dinklage will also lend his voice to the special. Sketch creators Day, Moynihan and Streeter Seidell will have voiceover roles as well. Set in a small suburban town on All Hallows’ Eve, the special centers on David Pumpkins and his skeleton sidekicks who show a young boy and his sister the true meaning of Halloween, answering none of their questions along the way. The half-hour special will air on Saturday, Oct. 28 at 11:30 p.m. ET/PT.

“It’s scary how quickly the original ‘SNL’ sketch caught on, and we’re thrilled that Tom Hanks is back to keep the fun going,” said George Cheeks, president of business operations and late night programming for NBC Entertainment and Universal Television.

Uncommon Type: Some Stories By Tom Hanks

1

Uncommon Type: Some Stories by Tom Hanks is a  collection comprised of 17 stories, each having something to do with a different typewriter. (the beloved actor has an affinity for the machines, owning a collection of over one hundred vintage typewriters.) But outside of that particular shared detail, the plots and characters vary wildly:

A gentle Eastern European immigrant arrives in New York City after his family and his life have been torn apart by his country’s civil war. A man who loves to bowl rolls a perfect game–and then another and then another and then many more in a row until he winds up ESPN’s newest celebrity, and he must decide if the combination of perfection and celebrity has ruined the thing he loves. An eccentric billionaire and his faithful executive assistant venture into America looking for acquisitions and discover a down and out motel, romance, and a bit of real life.

These are just some of the tales Hanks tells in this first collection of his short stories. They are surprising, intelligent, heartwarming, and, for the millions and millions of Tom Hanks fans, an absolute must-have!

Hanks began work on the book in 2015. “In the two years of working on the stories, I made movies in New York, Berlin, Budapest, and Atlanta and wrote in all of them,” he says in a statement. “I wrote in hotels during press tours. I wrote on vacation. I wrote on planes, at home, and in the office. When I could actually make a schedule, and keep to it, I wrote in the mornings from 9 to 1.”

Says Knopf Chairman and Editor-in-Chief Sonny Mehta, “I read a story by Tom in The New Yorker several years ago, and was struck by both his remarkable voice and command as a writer. I had hoped there might be more stories in the works. Happily, for readers, it turns out there were.”

The 416 page hardcover will be released on October 24, 2017.

Watch Tom Hanks In The Inferno Trailer

1

Sony Pictures has released the first Inferno trailer. Inferno is director and producer Ron Howard’s third mystery involving Tom Hanks’ Robert Langdon.

Inferno finds the famous Harvard symbologist on a trail of clues tied to the great Dante himself. When Langdon wakes up in an Italian hospital with amnesia, he teams up with Sienna Brooks (Felicity Jones), a doctor he hopes will help him recover his memories. Together, they race across Europe and against the clock to foil a deadly global plot.

The third film in the franchise that launched with The Da Vinci Code in 2006 and continued with Angels & Demons in 2009, Inferno has Hanks reprising his role as Langdon opposite Oscar nominee Felicity Jones (The Theory of Everything) as Dr. Sienna Brooks, Irrfan Khan (Life of Pi) as Harry Sims (also known as The Provost), Omar Sy (The Intouchables) as Christoph Bruder, and Sidse Babett Knudsen (“Borgen”) as Dr. Elizabeth Sinskey, the head of the World Health Organization. Ben Foster (Lone Survivor) is also slated to star as the film’s chief villain.

The Imagine Entertainment production, which has a screenplay by David Koepp based on the book by Dan Brown, is slated for release on October 28, 2016. The project’s executive producers include Dan Brown, Anna Culp, Bill Connor, and David Householter.
