What Is The Best Sandwich in Every U.S. State?

From the humble grilled cheese to slow-cooked pulled pork, there’s something for everyone at sandwich establishments across the nation.

Preferences vary widely from state to state: Some can be held in your hands, much like the original; other’s require a fork and knife to dig into. For purists, a sandwich is anything between two slices of bread or halves of a roll (burgers and hot dogs notwithstanding), and every one of the 50 states has something exciting in that regard to offer.

To create this list, Far & Wide did a deep dive into the culinary history and local specialties of each and every state in order to identify its emblematic sandwich. Once they zeroed in on the dish that best represented the local cuisine, they delved into reviews on Yelp, Facebook, Instagram and TripAdvisor to find the restaurants, sandwich shops and food carts that locals claimed were making the very best examples of what their state had to offer.

I’m going to go off the list and give a shout out to Portland, Maine where I grew up and their iconic Italian sandwich. For those unfamiliar, a Maine Italian sub is prepared using a long soft Italian bread, ham, American cheese, tomato, onion, sour pickle, green bell pepper, black olives, olive oil, salt and black pepper. I know that everyone loves Amato’s for this New England treat but I prefer Dipietro’s Market in South Portland. If Sam is working say hello from me and feel free to ship me a sub, I sure miss them!
