Cobra Kai Renewed For Season 2 At YouTube Red

YouTube Red has given a second season order to its Karate Kid followup, Cobra Kai.

The series, which first dropped on the streaming service May 2, stars Ralph Macchio and William Zabka in their reprised roles from the 1980s franchise. This time, though, they are all grown up and mentoring teenagers in their own way. Macchio’s Daniel LaRusso is a typical San Fernando Valley dad, while Zabka’s Johnny is still a gruff and grizzled guy who reluctantly takes a neighbor (Xolo Mariduena) under his wing and opens a dojo of his own.

The cast also includes Tanner Buchanan, Mary Mouser and Courtney Henggeler.

“This series had all of the right elements from the very beginning  — compelling characters, a storied rivalry, and the talented original stars,” said Susanne Daniels, YouTube’s global head of original content. “The way viewers have embraced the new twist on this beloved franchise has been nothing short of amazing, and we’re thrilled to partner with Sony TV, Overbrook and the extraordinary creative team led by Josh Heald, Jon Hurwitz, and Hayden Schlossberg to create a second season.”

The series comes from writers and executive producers Josh Heald, Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg. The showrunning trio also served as directors for much of the first season and will do the same in the second. James Lassiter and Caleeb Pinkett will also return as executive producers. The show comes from Hurwitz & Schlossberg Productions and Overbrook Entertainment in association with Sony Pictures Television Studios.

“We are so elated with the performance of Cobra Kai and our incredible partnerships with Josh, Jon, Hayden and Overbrook and of course, You Tube Red. This has been a remarkable experience and the audience reaction only further validates what we already knew – that this team and series is exceptional and incredibly special,’ said Jeff Frost, president, Sony Pictures Television.

The first round’s over, are you ready for the second? Cobra Kai Season 2 coming 2019.

The original Karate Kid, Ralph Macchio, reprises his role as Daniel LaRusso to face off once again with his rival Johnny Lawrence, played once again by William Zabka.

Watch The New Teaser Trailer For Cobra Kai

A second teaser trailer for Cobra Kai, a YouTube Red 10-episode half-hour comedy series set 30 years after The Karate Kid Part III, has been released. The original Karate Kid, Ralph Macchio, reprises his role as Daniel LaRusso to face off once again with his rival Johnny Lawrence, played once again by William Zabka.

Long after Daniel-san triumphed over Johnny twice in the All Valley Karate Tournament, both martial artists have grown up and gone on to live different lives. With Mr. Miyagi’s life lessons, Daniel has found personal success in his own family and career as a car dealer. Johnny, however, has fallen on hard times. Seeking to reclaim what glory he had from the past, Johnny reopens the infamous karate dojo that he once ruled as its ace student, and Daniel is having none of it.

Karate Kid Series Reuniting Ralph Macchio & William Zabka Coming To YouTube Red

Cobra Kai will debut next year on YouTube’s subscription service, YouTube Red. The 10-episode series is described as a comedy that picks up 30 years after the events of the original movie as down on his luck Johnny Lawrence, again played by Billy Zabka, re-opens the Cobra Kai dojo.

You remember, the school run by misunderstood evil sensei John Kreese, whose mantra was “Strike first, strike hard, no mercy.”

Naturally, this catches the attention of Johnny’s former rival, Daniel LaRusso, played by Ralph Macchio. While now successful in life, he still misses his late mentor, Mr. Miyagi, who taught “Daniel-san” karate while sneakily forcing him to renovate his house and wax his car.

“Like everyone who grew up in the 1980s, the three of us are enormous fans of ‘The Karate Kid,'” executive producers Josh Heald, Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg said in a statement. “‘Cobra Kai’ will be a true continuation of the original films — packed with comedy, heart and thrilling fight scenes. We can’t wait to reignite the LaRusso-Lawrence rivalry.”

Look for Cobra Kai to come to YouTube Red in 2018.
