Gallery 1988 in Los Angeles has announced Jerrod Maruyama’s solo art show. Cutesy will open later this month.
The artist describes the show:
“My work has always been labeled Cutesy. Sometimes that is meant as a compliment. Other times – like in college – not so much. But no matter what the reaction might be over the years, I continue to salute the cute. I respect its power and mass appeal. Cute is timeless. Cute is emotional. It cuts to the heart. It evokes a gut reaction. And isn’t that what we want from art?
This show is a celebration of all things cute. It is a random collection of inspiration, nostalgia and pop culture. Each image attempts to present its subject matter in the cutest way possible. As is the case with all my work, I want to get to the heart of the appeal of my subject. I never want to force-fit a topic into my style. I want to boil it down to its most basic elements. I don’t want to get in the way. I just want to present what we love about these characters and stories in their most concentrated state. That is what I hope to achieve with this show. I hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoyed creating it.”
The show opens Friday, October 25th and will run through November 9th.
