The Criterion Collection Announces Defending Your Life Blu-Ray For March

One of my favorite movies of all-time, Defending Your Life by Albert Brooks will receive the deluxe Criterion Collection treatment in March. If you haven’t watched Brooks’ hilarious take on the afterlife in this smart film then I urge you to do so!!!

Is there love after death? Acerbic everyman Albert Brooks finds a perfect balance between satirical bite and romantic-comedy charm as the writer, director, and star of this wonderfully warm and imaginative existential fantasy. After he dies suddenly, the hapless advertising executive Daniel Miller (Brooks) finds himself in Judgment City, a gleaming way station where the newly deceased must prove they lived a life of sufficient courage to advance in their journey through the universe. As the self-doubting Daniel struggles to make his case, a budding relationship with the uninhibited Julia (Meryl Streep) offers him a chance to finally feel alive. Buoyed by a brilliant supporting cast that includes Rip Torn, Lee Grant, and Buck Henry, Defending Your Life is a rare feat of personal, philosophical filmmaking that happens to also be divinely entertaining.

Features:

– New 4K digital restoration, supervised by director Albert Brooks, with 2.0 surround DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack on the Blu-ray
– New conversation between Brooks and filmmaker Robert Weide
– New interview on the afterlife with theologian and critic Donna Bowman
– New program featuring excerpts from 1991 interviews with Brooks and actors Lee Grant and Rip Torn
– Trailer
– English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing
– Plus an essay by filmmaker Ari Aster

Based On The Marvel Comic Series, The New Mutants Arrives On Blu-ray November 17

In this terrifying, action-fueled film based on the Marvell comic series, five young people who demonstrate special powers are brought to a secret institution to undergo treatments they are told will cure them of the dangers of their powers. Included are Danielle Moonstar aka Mirage (Blu Hunt), who creates illusions from other people’s fears; Rahne Sinclair (Maisie Williams), who transforms into the werewolf Wolfsbane; Sam Guthrie (Charlie Heaton), who, as Cannonball, can fly at jet speeds protected by a force field; Roberto da Costa aka Sunspot (Henry Zaga), who absorbs and channels solar power; and Illyana Rasputin aka Magik (Anya Taylor-Joy). The younger sister of Colossus, Magik becomes encased in armor at will and wields a soulsword that amplifies her multiple superhuman and psychic abilities. Invited by Dr. Cecilia Reyes (Alice Braga) to share their stories about when their powers first manifested, the five “patients” come to understand that they are in a class of people called mutants, who have historically been marginalized and feared. As they relive their origin stories, their memories seem to turn into terrifying realities. Soon, they question what is real and what isn’t, and it becomes clear that the institution isn’t what it seems. Now the question is — why are they being held captive? And who is trying to destroy them?

20th Century Studios in association with Marvel Entertainment presents The New Mutants, an original horror thriller set in an isolated hospital where a group of young mutants is being held for psychiatric monitoring. When strange occurrences begin to take place, both their new mutant abilities and their friendships will be tested as they battle to try and make it out alive.

The film stars Anya Taylor-Joy (Split, The Witch) as Magik and Maisie Williams (Game of Thrones, gen:LOCK) as Wolfsbane, with Henry Zaga (13 Reasons Why) as Sunspot, Blu Hunt as Dani Moonstar, and Stranger Things’ Charlie Heaton as Cannonball.

The New Mutants adapts the monthly comic book series of the same name that launched in 1982. Created by Chris Claremont and Bob McLeod, The New Mutants follows on a group of teenage mutants as heroes in training in the Marvel Universe. The feature is expected to be a departure from the sci-fi-action spectacle of other X-Men films and is instead being described as a “Stephen King meets John Hughes”-style horror movie.

Add The New Mutants to your X-Men collection when the film arrives on Digital, 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray and DVD on November 17.

Watch The Opening Title Sequence For Batman: Death In The Family

Warner Bros. Home Entertainment has released the opening title sequence for Batman: Death in the Family, WBHE’s first-ever venture into interactive storytelling that allows fans to choose where the story goes through an innovative navigation guided by the viewer’s remote control. Central to the extended-length short is an adaptation of “Batman: A Death in the Family,” the 1988 landmark DC event where fans voted by telephone to determine the story’s ending.

The clip below features the stylish opening title sequence to the animated short, which was designed by writer/producer/director Brandon Vietti, and executed by Supervising Technical Director Matt Girardi and his team at Warner Bros. Animation.

Produced by Warner Bros. Animation and DC, “Batman: Death in the Family” serves as the anchor for an anthology of 2019-2020 animated shorts – including “Sgt. Rock,” “Adam Strange,” “Death” and “The Phantom Stranger.” The set arrives from WBHE on Blu-ray and Digital starting October 13, 2020.

The interactive component is only available on the Blu-ray. The Digital version of “Batman: Death in the Family” offers four fully-played out linear versions of the short.
